INTRODUCTION The Manuscript This edition of the Tarayona (Tg ) is based on the photocopy of its one and only MS which is in the Jibacãritra-sūri MSS. Collection of Bikaner in Rajasthan and is mumbered 3584 A photo-copy of the MS was supplied by the Late Agarchand Nahta to the Late Dr A N Upadhye The MS. is incomplete It had originally twentytwo folios, of which folios no 14, 15 and 16 are missing Correspondingly we have a gap in the text covering the portion of the original from vv 100 to 126 and the commentary portion for the w 99 to 126 As the grouping of the Gathās in Tg ranges from three to six, it is to be inferred that the lost portion contained possibly round about twenty verses of Bappabhaltı and five or SIX "index' verses of the compiler The MS measures 25 x 10 cm It has 15 fines per side and 53 letters per line on an average The MS is carefully written and is fairly correct It is undated The Padımātrā is used its date can bc guessed as not later taan 1500 AD Tg is in the form of an anthology prepared by one Sarikuka by collecting and arranging in various groups the Prakrit verses of the poet Bappabhaltı Each verse group is prefaced by the anthologist with his own verse which indexes the key-words of the verses in that group, There is also a Sanskrit commentary on all the verses The colophon at the end of the MS gives 172 33 inc notar Tramtidet of verses, 'out actually we fina 175 verses It also gives 1000 Granthagras as the extent according to the traditional count 1 Tūrájana Poet Bappabbatti-sari (a) Life The chief traditional sources giving a historical cum-legendary account of the life and achivements of Bappabhalţi are as follows 1. Bappabhttı kathānaka (BK) in Prakrit from the anonymous Prabandha-catustaja, so far unpublished It is being edited by Dr RM Shah The MS 15 dated VS 1291 (1 C 1235 A D) 2 Bappabhottı-süri carita(BC )ın Prabhacandra's Prabhasahacarita written in VS 1334 (1 e 1278 AD) It seems to have used the Bappabhatti-kathanala and some other source Besides these two we get Bappabhaifi's complete or partial account in several other later Jain works The account given in Raja sekhara's Prabandhakosa (1349 AD) is mainly an abridged prose version of BC Similarly the accounts found in the Prabandha-cintamani (13th cent), Puratana prabandha samgraha (13th cent ), Vrudhatirthahalpa (1333 AD). Munisundara's Upadefaralnakara (first half of the 15th cent), Subhaala's Pancasariprabodha-sambandha (1465 AD) etc. derile ultimately from the first two sources Below I give the main points of the latter 1 Earlier HR Kapadia has giảen in Gujarati the biographical account of Bappabhati in the introduction to his edition of Carurrimsanka (1926) It is based on the Prabharakacarita, Prabandhakosu, Upadefuratnākara and Vijay alakemi suris Upadesaprāsada TIC account iven in the introduction to Pandit and Utgikars cdition of the Gaudasgha (1927) is based on the Prabandhalosa, Viudhat wo kalpa, Samayasundara's Garhasahasri and l'radyumna sıras N'icdrasära.prakarana It is summarised by NG Suru in the Introdu ction to his edition of the Gaudaraha (1975), PP 61-66 The short account given by A N Upadhye in Borrt hann and his Tarigana, a paper submitted 10 the Urin Session of tie All India Oriental Conference (Prakrit and Jainism Section) 1971 and published in Sambodhi ly it 1975 ir 67-72) is also tased on these sources 1 Introduction 3 Siddhascna-suti, th: Actry of the Mocha Gaccha fnou at the city of Palalt in Gürjar dess, ruled ovzr by Julaluttu Once he want on 1 pilgrimiz: to th: Mihiva templs at Modhor There a six y:15 old boy nim. alias Nagāvloka as an eminent poct at the latter's court finds now a clear support from Tg y 3 and 5 In Tg the anthologist Sankuka introduces himself as an inmatc of the circle of litcrarv clites at Nagavaloka's court Tg 3 is explaineứ by the Sanskrit commentary as Sankuka's tribute to fus royal patron Ammu The MS reads nävaloja wlucht is metrically untenable This is corrected in a later hand to read tenaralo; a whici does not make sense D.* to scribal error jā is dropped hence it is to be cmended as näyssaloz 1 So even if we grant the likelihood of soma confusion in d tails in the account of Amn's career Bappabha'fis friendship with Amma Nagavaloka (ne Nigabhattı II of the Gū sara Prarthara dynasty) and his literary eminence are 10 be accepted as historical facts There is enough evidence also for Gwalior being a centre of Jainism in the eighth century and for Mihira Bhoja's patronic, to Jainism 2 (6) Literary Activity According to BC v 660 Bappabhaltı was the author of 52 works including the most important Tåragana At present however we know only of thc Tarågana and the following short works of the several Stoir is composed by Bappabhatis only two are ertant 1 112 Catur ymfatika a lymn to the twenty four Tirthamkaras 96 verses 2 3 Sarada stotra in 13 verses addressed to Sarasvati Besides these there are references to the following Vägdeni stuti in 14 verses beginning with the word adharıla (BC V 427) Sini-drvald-stalanı bozina ng with tì "d, san jugad ral sd-kara (BC V 619) 4 2 See MW Meister, Tma Amrol and Jainism Journal of the Oriensal Institute Baroda 22 3 March 1973 pp 354 358 6 Tarājana 5 6 Vira-stuti, in 11 verses, beginning with the words Santo vešale froma-suklia-pliala (Prabandha-kosa, P 36, 1 29-30) One hundred and eight interpretations of the Apabhramša verse rath salt melaia keha etc of which four interpretations actually cited at BC PP 89-90 dre Besides these we have numerous stray verses and samassapurtis in Sanskrit Prakrit and Apabhrinsa, said to have been composed by Bappabhatti and quoted in various biographical accounts Several of these verses are met with elsewhere in Sanskrit and Prakrit literatures and we cannot be quite definite about their authorship For example the Gatht val-vivara-niggaja dalo eramdo ctc (BC v 349-350) JS the same as Saptasutaka, 257 The commentator Bhuvanapala has ascribed it to Palittaka ie Pada luptn The Gatha puja-sambh irana-paluttamia etc (BC v 354) IS the same as Saprafataha, 222 Bhuvanapăla has ascribed it to Brahnacārın Now eventhough it is true that Brahmacāun was one of the several Birudas of Bappabhati, to accept this ascription is genuine would mean that the Saptafataka contains verses even from the authors of the eighth century Bhuvanapaln las ascribed Sapta fataka, 25 (ekko u kalasaro etc) to Brahmactrin Saptašataka 635 (anumarana-paſthiyae) is attributed to Bappabliattı himself, 3 and 573 (balaza de vacca etc) to Svetapata Pitambara also ascribes Saptasaraka, 405 (rasia viaddha etc) to Brahmacārın Morcover a few Gathas are ascribed by Bhuvanaptla to Vakpatıraja, who, if he is assumed to be identical with the famous Prakrit poet was contemporary with Bappabhaltı The samas) d-purti verse bhihlhajaro etc (BC W 644-645) is the same as Saptasataha, 162 and it is attributed to Bhrätska in Bhuvanpala The samasya purn verse in Apabhramsa, viz, pasu Jema pulimdau etc (BC Yv 268 269) is the same as one we find, apparently as a citation, in the Old Gujarati romance Saday asarsacaritra of Bhima (15th cent) For some of the Sanskrit verses assa etc) is ascribed to 3 Saptafataha v 614 (ranna kkar Bappaka Introduction 7 attributed to Bappabhat}i in BC He find a similar state of allars The authorship of all these verses remains considerably doubtful On the other hand it seems that the seven Githas said to be sent by Bappabhaltı as a part of retort to Ama s verses that stressed the sorry plight of the fomer when he was deprived of the litter s patronage are genuinely ascribed to our poct The reason is that the group of these Gathas 15 prefaced by a mncmonic Apabhramsa verse listing them by giving a key-word of each of ihcm This was a traditional device to record and protect the authorship or stray verses It is quite likely that these Gathas also were included in the Tardjana and figured in that portion which is now lost (see p 10) These Gåthas along with the introductory contents vers are as follows 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 गय माणसु चंदणु भमरु रयणायर ससिरड्ड । ।

Introduction attributed 10 Bappadhaltı in BC we find a similar state of affairs The authorship of all these yerses remains considerably doubtful On the other hand it seems that the seven Gathas said to be sent by Bappabliaffi as a part of retort to Ama's verses that stressed the sorry plight of the fomer when he was deprived of the latter s patronage are genuinely ascribed to our poet The reason Is that the group of these Gathas 1s prefaced by a mnemonic Apabhramsa verse listing them by giving a key-word of cach of them This was a traditional device to record and protect the authorship of stray verses It is quite likely that these Gathas also were included in the Tarayana and figured in that portion which is now lost (see p 10) These Gathas along with the introductory contents verse are as follows 2 3 4 5 6 7 गय माणसु चंदणु भमरु रयणायरु ससिसड । ।

6 Tarājana 5 Vira-stuti, in 11 verses, beginning with the words Santo vešak froma-sukla-phala (Prabandha-kola, p 36, 1 29-30) 6 One hundred and eight interpretations of the Apabhramſa verse tatil sialı meldia hehd etc of which four interpretations are actually cited at BC pp 89-90 Besides these we have numerous stray verses and samasjapārtis in Sanskrit Prakrit and Apabhimsa, said to have been composed by Bappabhaft and quoted in various biographical accounts Several of these verses are met with elsewhere in Sanskrit und Prakrit literatures and we cannot be quite definite about their authorship For example the Gatht val-vivara-niggaja dalo eramdo etc (BC v 349-350) 15 the same as Saptafutaka, 257 The commentator Bhuvanapala has ascribed it to Palittaka 1 c Padafipta The Gatha pija-sambh vrana-paluflamta etc (BC v 354) is the same as Saptafaraka, 222 Bhuvanapāla has ascribed it to Brahmacärin Now eventhough it is true that Brahmacarın one of the several Birudas of Bappabhalts to accept this ascription as genuine would mean that the Saptafataka contains verses even from the authors of the eighth century Bhuvanapāla has ascribed Saptasataha 25 (ekko u kalasaro etc) to Brahmacīrin Saprasataka 635 (anumarana pasthiyae) ic attributed to Bappabhattı himself 3 and 573 (bāla, a de vacca etc ) to Svetapata Pitambara also ascribes Saptasataka, 405 (rasia viaddl a etc) to Brahmacarin Moreover a few Gathas are ascribed by Bhuvanapala to Vakpatiraja who, if he is assumed to be identical with the famous Prakrit poet, was contemporary with Bappabhattı 1125 Thu samasya pürtı verse blukkhayaro etc (BC Vv 644-645) is the same as Saptašataka, 162 and it is attributed to Bhratrka in Bhuvanpala The samasya purti verse in Apabhramsa vz, pasu jema pulimdau etc (BC vy 268 269) is the same as one we find, apparently as a citation, in the Old Gujarati romance Saday asarsacaritra of Bhima (15th cent) For some of the Sanskrit verses 3 Saptasaraka v 614 (vanna kkama rahisassa etc) is ascribed to Bappaka 7 Introduction attributed to Bappabhattı in BC we find a similar state of affairs The ruthorship of all these verscs remains considerably doubtful On the other hand it seems that the seven Gathas said to be sent by Bappabhalf as a part of retort to Ama's verses that stressed the sorry plight of the fomet utien he was deprived or the latter s patronage are genuinely ascribed to our poct The reason is that the group of these Gathas 15 prefaced by a mnemonic Apabhramša verse listing them by giving a key word of cach of them This was a traditional device to record and protect the nuthorship of strny verses It is quite likely that these Gathas also were included in the Tarayana and figured in that portion which is now lost (see p 10) Tliese Gathas along with the introductory contents verse are as follows 5 6 4 2 3 7 गय माणसु चंदणु भमरु रयणायरु ससिसडु ।

Vadijanghala, defining Kosa as made up of verses on diverse topics, mentions Gathakota, Krsnasära and Tarāgana as its instances - These authors have probably depended upon secondary sources, and none of them had actually seen the work and known it actually as a compilation from Bappabhalfi's stray verses (b) The Compier of the Tärā, 8n2 Tg vv 5, 6 and 7 inform us about the title, nature and authorship of Tg and about the original author of the Muktakas or Subhăsitas given in the work Sankuka, the compiler, was 4 V. Raghavan, Bhoja's Smgāraprakasa (1963), p 629, A N Upadhye, 'Bappa Bhalf and His Tårågana', Sambodhi, III IV Jab , 1975, pp 67-72 Upadhye has rightly suggested to correct hatla so as to reid guthā in the citation from Vadı. janghala Introduction Bhava's son (bhayappao, Sk blasõnajah or bliavapital, ie bhava + Deśya uppas + suffix ka) He belonged to the Grutama Gotra He was a member of the assembly of the literary elites that adorned the court of king Nāgāvaloka, and as such lic had benefited much from his associates in one of the Mongala verses (Tg 3) Sankuka pays comliments to his patroa-king, who was also known as Amma according to the commentator Sankuka, being a great admirer (and possibly a close friend) of Bappabhalt) collected and appropriately arranged the stray Gathās of the latter ror this he was also requested by eminent poets and scholars of his literary circle Consequently Sarkula compiled this Tarāsana, 'the assembly of stars' so called because it contains groups of star-like brilliant Gathas Vy 75 and 175 characterize this compilation as Kośa and in the colophon it is called Subhāsitakoša The commentator refers to the anthologist as gåthakofahora (Tg v 52) Sankuka enumerates various nicknames, sobriquets or epithets by which Bappabhali was known They are Gunanuräga, Bhadralirti, Gajapati, Acarya, Svetabhiksu and Vadın In the colophon Bappabhattı is given the epithet of moha vadindra "The Grand Master of Sastric Debators' The Prabharakacarita cnumerates the following Birudas of Bappabhafft Bhadrzkirti, Vadikunjara-hesarin, Brahmacarin Gajavara and Räga pūjita At another place it narrates an episode (vv 284 to 344) which explains how Bappabhatti got the birudas 'Gajavara' and 'Brahmacarin' (v 340) It is to be noted however that Sankuka's list does not contain 'Brahmacảrin' (c) General Structure are written of the total 175 verses of Tg , about 59 verses by Sankura 9 introductory verses, 40 index verses (32 + some 8 in the missing portion) and ore concluding vesse These verses reveal Sankula as an adept in composing Prakrit Gathas of high literary excellence, and as a connoisseur receptive to the finest qualities of epigrammatic poetry 5 'appo piya', Dešināmamala, I, 6, 10 Tarayana The Bappabhaltı verses are distributed over Sone 36 to 39 groups 31 groups in the extent portion and from 5 to 8 groups, guessed to have been contained in the lost portion The number of verses within each group ranges from 1 to 10, but groups of 4, 2 or 3 are more frequent, as will be seen from the following tiblc five-verse groups 4 one verse groups 3 two-verse groups 7 three-verse groups 6 four-verse groups 9 seven verse group ten-verse group 1 The grouping of the Gathas is broadly based on topical sameness or affinity, and some pattern is also evident in the sequ. cnce of the groups As a contemporary of Bappabhattı Sankuka is to be assigned to the end of the eighth and the beginning of the minth century We know of the poetician Sankuka, who had commented on Bharata's Naty afästra and who is said to have composed a poem called Bhuvanabhyudaja He flourished during the reign of Ajitäpida of Kashmere (814 851 AD) Thus he also belonged to the first half of the 9th century But our Sankuka had the Pratshära Log Amma Mägāvaloka or Nagabhafta II as his patron and he seems to be adept in Prakrit literature So the clearly suggesting that he was a Jun This also boru out by the Commentary on v 13 In the opening verse the commentator states that his aim is to bring out the precise meaning and purport of the verses by giving luc d rendering of all the words, so that all the misinterpretations and misunderlatroduction standings are removed from the readers' minds The commentator gives the total number of the verses of Tg as 172 in the Ms the last verse is numbered 175 This means that either therc was some error in numbering or the text as given in this Ms has thrcc extra verses The commentator luis donc his job neatly and efficientiy He meticulously explains various compound cxpressions (at times almost like a teacher to the novices) and clarifies both the meanings in the case of double-meaning expressions The figures too are identified and explained briefly, and the general signi. ficance and purport of the verse is pointed out appropriately His knowledge of Prakrit and Sanskrit is that Gathts contain ing these words were composed by Bappab ı I In the commentarial literature an th Jain Canonical terts We find the practice of using dvara-g81! * o samgrahonigoing in the Niryuktis, some of which are datable in the sixth century the 12 Tarayana illustrative tales are not given in full. Instead, we find a verse or two, containing in a short-hand style some key words indicating some important characters or incidents of the tale Or if a group of related tales are to be referred to the verse is made up of the names of the characters Such dvära-gathās or samgrahangathas had a mnemonic function In some anthologies of stray verses (muktaka) of different authors, eg the Anyohiyaştaka samgraha, each group of verses on a particular snbject (eg gaja, bhramara, hamsa, etc) is prefaced by a pratika-verse or dvara, which gives the first word of cach verse in the group In the Satavahana-prabandha given in the Prabandh7 ciniamani and the Puratanaprabandna samgı aha we find two diara-gathas, cach of which gives the key-words of the four Gāthas which follow it Those dvāra-gāthīs are as follows arri hoftałta a SOTETIT at a nigr far पयाइ नपरि सालाहणेण ariff offerig 11 कयलीतरु विझगिरी' नेहाहारा य च दणदुमो य । पयाओ नवरि सालाहणेण नव काडि गहियाभो ।। 1S Earlier we have noted and quoted seven Gathās which the Prabandhas ascribe to Bappabhatt, and which are prefaced with an Apabhramsa verse giving the key-words of these Gäthas and the name of their author. Similarly a verse (Dola) giving the key-words of the five Dobas composed by the Paramāra king Muñja of Malwa recorded in Hemacandra's Chandonusasana It is as follows el qiÈTE-He', 7270713 493* FA-yu ! emotion suggestively conveyed The verses depending on literary figures for poetic charm are in a minority But in later Prakrit Muktakas (as for example those collected in the Vasjalagga) the mode of expression has become considerably ornate The same trend is evident in Tg Loss of intervocalıc stop in Māhārastri Prakrit produced a large number of homonyms This lexical trait was fully exploited by the later Prakrit poets They became adept in using Ślesi quite effectively Bappabhatti shows admiralle expertise in employing Slesa Besides, he has used figures like Upama, Uipreksa, Rupaka, Many of his images are bold and original, and reveal his mastery over the Kavya tradition Several of his memorable images derive from the ordinary day-to day life A fruit with one stone formed in its thatcher (28), barber (30), putting milk-soaked cotton pads on sore eyes (32), lamp torches taking the round of houses in the Dipávali festival (39), protective amulet (90), stage actress (94), incense burner (150) such images serve here to concretire, sharpen or invest with a shock of pleasant surprise the situation or idea under description The encomiums showered on the poet Bappabliafli by the compiler and the subsequent Jain tradition is evidently based as much on critical appreciation as on worshipful regard It is not quite explicable how a poet of such eminence could be almost completely disregarded by the literary tradition 8 Like Bhartrhari and Amaruka in Sanskrit Bappabhafti is uniqne as an early Prakrit poet who has authentically some iwo centuries of excellent Muktakas to his credit Inspite of this fact not even the Vapālagga has a single citation from Tg Perhaps the MSS of the work samehow became scarce at an early date Under the circumstances, it was quite a pleasant surprise when I chanced to spot a few Gathas of Tg either adipted or anonymously cited in two works of the 11th century AD One of these is a Jain poem in Apabhramśa, the Jambūsamicarija of
