EDITOR S NOTE Our object in publishing this compilation as it stands is to bring within easy reach of one and all in our Provinces the onginal texts of inscriptions in Devanāgarı characters the most popular Indian Script in which Sansknt works are written and published in India It may be taken as a supplement to a portion of Ra Bahadur Dr Hiralals Last of CP Inscriptions which contains brief notes on almost all the inscrip tions included in the e pages excepting those which our society has been able to discover quite recently The learned Dr Hirālal once wrote to me to prepare a poetical work by the name of Kosalayana I leave it for the readers to judge how far this compilation will go to answer his sug gestion Instead of attempting to prepare an original book I thought it more useful to collect the writings of literary men of ore in this part of hosala which do contain some sort of 3997 or inspired writing or account and throw light on various phases of culture and civilisation of the princes and people alike The work of printing had already begun in the life time of the great Orientalist Dr Hırālal—the pride and glory of CP s but it did not please God to spare him to us here and to enable us to secure his ever affectionate blessings upon the appearance of this compilation which owes its very origin to him I have tric to eulogise in my own words the Mahakosala country and its past poets and writers whose names occur in in crptional records Scholars may kindly pardon us for our boldness and may take this as a crude altempt towards bringing out an illustrated edition of similar but exhaustive and complete compilation of inscriptional documents under more favourable circumstances This is only a fore runner as it wcre We feel greatly encouraged by the most hind message we have been favoured with and God helping we hope to bring the 2nd ed nion of this book upto the mark We owc our indebtedness to all our kind friends and well wishers who have helped us with their suggestions from time to ume I know an Indian village can hardly aspire to the famc of an uplodate civilised capital town of any Province in our country not to speak of any such city in Lurope Any compilation prepared and published in auch an out of the way place will surely be lacking in many respects But as the Sansknt saying goes 37TTUTT ATOP 7 we have tried cur beat to hll a gap

PREFACE Though the Descriptive List of Inscriptions in the Central Provinces and Berar by the famous scholar Ras Bahadur (now the Late Dr) Hiralal BA MRAS is in itself a very useful work and contains in short all available information about the inscriptions policed in it yet it cannot remove the want of an up to date compilation of onginal texts of stone and copper plate inscriptions with correct readings of them Inscriptions discovered in the Central Provinces have been noticed and described in various journals and periodicals some of which are now out of print and are not available in even famous provincial libraries in India I do not know of any library * in CP including the CP Secretariat Library where a research scholar can get for reference a decent number of such journals and quarterlies in which inscnptions from CP and Berar have been pub lished and discussed I have personal experience of the difficultyn procuring such periodicals and journals without the free use and study of which the work of historical research is sure to suffer The rules and regulations of big Government Libraries in India with regard to the giving of loans of important books and papers to scholars engaged in critical and scientific study of history are sometimes found to be strict and this proves to be detrimental to the successful and early performance of their work The antiquarion journals and periodica's are in a way reach of vast number of Sanskrit and Vernacular knowing scholars living in the country side and in their calm and quiet Asrams (abodes) A handy compilation of the present type is sure to prove a welcome publication to them ar to create a love for the study of history and archæology giving them a stimulus to take to useful research worl To the University students of Indian History and Epigraphy this compila tion it is hoped will be equally useful and will help them towards thorough study of vanous inscriptional documents In the absence of any classical Sanskrit work of note in these Provinces the poems and prose compositione presented in these pages will serve the purpose of an excellent collection of literary gems of poets and writera whose names must have been lost for ever but for the reason of these compositions being incised on stone slabs and copper plates As no official or private attempts scem to have been made to take out of th . Thanks to the noble attempt of Prol V V Mali MA Head of the Sen kot Department Nagpur Un ersts some fre h addition of important pe cod colo + censtly be n made to th A gpu University Lbrary which are ure to pro e urclul to schoals eng42 d in hi torical researci f [m] It 15 on the Distnct Officers must have visited these places and had they only cared to prepare three or four sets of estampages of the inscnptions and kept one of them as office copy for future use they would have been surely of immense help to us in deciphenng the writings at this stage really regrettable that the Provincial Governments and the Archæological Department do not recognise the great necessity and high value of preparing a number of eye copies or impressions of inscriptions and of carefully preserving at least two copies of such estampages of each inscription-one in the Provincial Museum and the other in the office of the District Officer of the D. Inict to which the inscription might belong It may not be out of place if I refer here to a gloomy aspect regarding exploration The sad ignorance of the amended rules in the Trea urc Trove Act part of the general public is a great stumbling block in the way of tracing out new finds of copper plates coins or images I know of cases where the finders out of fear for being prosecuted or harrassed by the authorities went so far as to destroy the finds to get nd of their awkward position The District Officers the Ruling Chiefs and the Local Bodies may do a distinct wervice to the cause of Archæology and historical research if they adopt a kind of appreciative measure by proclaiming to grant certificates and prizes to those who report newly unearthed documents or bring to light the concealed charters from the dark corners of their houses Another regrettable matter that we are indifferent in the study and collection of old coins which with only Iittle effort come across easily There 19 doubt sad lack of interest on the part of the enlightened public to trauc out and collect such coins from different localities There are old hos torical sites in our Provinces where even an experimental excavation is sure to yield rich fruits That these earth eaten copper bits are not of little help towards the mahing of an authentic history is described in the following lines by Mr Pannālal ICS the President of the Annual Session of the Numismatic Society of India held in December 1934 at Allahelad in his Presidential addres - As is well known we are very much handicapped in our studies of our ancient history by the poverty of contemporary historical documents We have three kinds of these (1) inscriptions on statues stone slabs and Tocks (2) documents such as grants to temples etc engraved on copper plates (3) lastly the coins which being more numerous than the other two are of pecral importance 19 & onc can no a | iv It is 1 "The solid contribution that has been made by their study sa now :0 universally recognised that I need no apology in inviting the genern! public to come in increasing numbers to share this intour of love with us promise you, a fascinating, study Unlike many other sciences it does not need a specialised laboratory or co«tly equipment or long, apprenticeship Any onc, provided he is leen, can start on the work this minute with a fair prospect of making the most soderíul discoveries that might alter our whole readıns, of history All that you have to do 19 to visit the small shops specially thc lamera in the villages that you may happen to pass through and for a few pico you can buy coinc old un current coins often centuries old, which you proceed to take home. decipher and classify according to kings Practically all coins contain the names of the hing and most contain the date of minting How painful it is, that we in CP have never carcd even to know what are the carlıest inscribed coins ever discovered in our Provinces The Gunji Rock inscription in the Salti State (CSA), contains the name of a king Rāño Kumāra Vāsanta (2nd century AD) But no coins of this king have yet come to light We know nothing about him and about king Mahendra of Kosala referred to in the Allahabad Pillar inscription of Samudragupta except their names The earliest coins with a legend in old Brāhmi are what are known as the Tripuri coins The original coins are now in the British Museum London * We are quite in the dark about the kings who issued these coins with the legend "Tripuri" in Brāhmi characters attributable to about 300 BC* The name of 'Tripuri' is found in some records of the 10th & 11th centuries AD Tripuri was the capital of the Kalacuris of Cedi of Dahala comprising the territories of present day Rewah, Jubbalpur and Banda The Kalacuris were ancient Rajput tribe who established their own era so far back as 248 AD, known as Ced, or Kalacuri era Why these coins were issued with the оце For two plaster-casts of these coins we to the courtesy of Dr LD Barnett and Mrſ Allan of the British Museum, scholars who are ever so kind to our Society Some of these coins shor the river Varmadir on one of their sides The Tripuri coins are of copper [ v name of the capital town of Cedt country inscribed on them is a matter for investigation To me it appears that the word was Tripurisah(fagtiz) meaning Lord of Tripuri of which the last letter 37 is not to be found on the coins due to its small size Bigger size of this type of coins if unearthed might solve the puzzle This name त्रिपुरी finds a place in the famous Sanskrit work Brihatsamhıtā of Varahamıhıra * In the history of Tnpur and its rulers dating from the coins with Brahmı legend of about 300 BC there is a gap of about 1200 years uptill the time of hokalla the first (circa 900 AD) Inscribed coins of unearthed at or about the old site of Tripur might throw fresh light upon this Just the reverse of fagot is the fate of water in respect of old coins This place was the capital of Mahākosala during the reigns of Mahā Śiva Tivaradeva and Maha Siva Gupta Balarjuna texts of whose copper and stone inscriptions have found place in the present compilation Maha Sıva Tivara Deva s charters & e emphatic that he was the Soverign Lord of entire kosala apparently Maha hosala His grandfather Indrabala is described in the Kharoda inscription in Kutil script as follows सावनीश्वरगिरोमणिराजिराजत पागम्युज शशिगम्बरपूर्णचन्द्र । | आसीन (प्रमिह इह कोसल भू सुरन्द्र श्रीपाण्डुशधर) इन्द्रपलाभियान ॥ श्रीमानीशानव भितिपनितिलक तम्यपुत्रोत्तमोऽभूत् ॥ This family besides producing the Lords of Kosala had the honour of being the main house of the Lords of Trikalinga otherwise known as later Guptas of Cuttack (Orissa) as distinguished from the earlier Guptas of Sırpur (Mahākosala) These had their capitals at Vonitapura and ग्रौलिकविभिनत्माऽन्ध्रदिशश्चाध्यकाठाश्च । वृषनालिकेर चम्दीपा विन्ध्यान्त वासिनस्त्रिपुरी॥ Clar 14 The वायुपुराण refers to पुरा's among जनपदा unler विध्यपृष्पनिमामिन ॥ तोमला कोसलाच पुरा यदिशाम्नथा । तुमुरास्तम्बुराव पटरा निषधै सह ॥ । प्रासी व पनिर 561 पास्तरिपुरि द्रवलाभिगान ॥

vi ] Yayātinagara situated on the bank of the Mahānadi We find from the copper-charters of Mahā Śiva Tivara-deva that during his reign the box-headed characters, also known as the Vākātaka Script was in use in Mahākosala No coins of Tivaradeva or of his father Nannadeva and grandfather, Indrabala cr of any of his immediate successors have yet come to light The only coin with a legend in the box-headed script at present known to exist in India, is that of the grandfather of Mahāsudevarāja named Prasanna Mātra the father of Mahājayaraja and Mānamātra who in turn was the father of Mahā Pravararāja cf Sarabhapur Line This interesting coin was discovered by our society and it is in its posses- In all probability Sarabhapura was the capital of the kings of this family about which city or town there is a sad want of authentic irforma- Even the location and identification of Sarabhapura have been left un-attempted One of the highest authority on ancient Indian coins Sir R Burn refers to this our Society's find in his note drawn for the Annual Bibliography of Indian Archæology for the year 1933 published by the Kern Institute-Leydon Holland which is just out To quote Sir Richard sion tion "Mediæval" Mr L P Pandeya describes in Indian Historical Quarterly of Calcutta IX p 595 an interesting silver coin or seal of quite a new type, bearing the name Prasanna-Mātra, which first appears in the seal of copper-plates issued by his grandscn Mahasudeva (Ep Ind IX p 172) No coins of this line have been published before, but as one side is blank the piece may have been struck as a seal or medal' "P 21 under-Indian Numismatics in 1933." Equally interesting is the copper coin of Rāno Śiva Śni Pilakas, just discovered by our Society at Bālpur from the bed of the Mahānadı the great river of Mahākosala otherwise known as Citrotpala As this coin is also blank on the reverse, it appears that in Mahākosala coins with blank reverses were in use It is not proper, therefore, to take such coins for a medal or seal Mr K N Dikshit MA, Dy Director-General of Archæology in India who has deciphered the legend on this coin is of opinion that it is a "unique coin" found in CP's His reading of the Brahmı legend is "Rāno Šiva Siri Pılakas " This name of the king tvn These two appears on the upper portion of the little round coin above the figure of a standing elephant According to Mr Dikshit the name of this Andhra king Palakas or Apılaka of the Puranas was known from no other epigraphical source The authenticity of the tradition embodied in the dynastic portion of the Purānas thus hnds confirmation on the basis of this coin The xamination of this copper coin and of the silver coin of TTHARIZ in original. leaves no doubt that they were struck as coins coins were not issued as medals or seals can be safely said As some coins of Gupta Period contain legends in beautiful Sanskrit verses from literary point of view also the study and search of old coins 15 of interest These coins contain one or two lines of verse in nitia पृथ्वी, उपजानि वशम्थरिल: metres which do disclose the taste for poetry of the kings and their court poets and architects Such legends and devices of coins give much to think and are proofs of the imagination and religious spirit of the intelligentsia of the age in which they were in use Most ot these have a message of their own to tell What is vanted is a spirit of true and patient investigation towards the thorough study of such metal bits-the sacred relics of different Indian Governments of the past Although our newly discovered antiquated coins supply us with only the names of individual kings the devices on them supply enough food for thought What is wanted 19 the undertaking of close investigation and continued exploration of old and deserted sites of forgotten and extinct cities like faget, nitr, qaager of Valātaha copper charter -igr and STTHC of the rulers and lords of which cilies there is a sad dearth of old coins A word or two about the nomenclature of this compilation The name कोमहरनमाला means a necklace of gems found in Kosala Here the word t has a double sense Ratanpur was the capital of the latest Ruling dynasty some of whose kings call themselves सरकोसलाधिप and माल्योसलमण्टनत्री Just hke श्रीपुर which was the capital of कोमग .

Below is the legend in two lines which reads श्रीमहाभवगुप्त राजदेवस्य So far I gather, this device on the seal is a departure from the devices of seals found attached to different charters of the Soma Vamsi Kings, Mahābhavagupta and Mahāśivagupta. In the absence of any strong ground, I attribute this charter to Mahābhava gupta I, who was the father of Mahāśıvagupta or Sivagupta, the first of the Kataka list As such the donor of the present charter can be aceepted as the grandfather of Mahābhavagupta Janamejaya and as the son of Mahā Śiva Gupta Bālārjuna of Sripur Lakshman temple stone inscription, The charter was issued from a village named FOCATEPE from the 'Great Victorious Army". किसरकेल्ला समावासित महाविजयकटकात् । The charter does not supply us any clue to determine the personal name of the donor's father as it omits it altogether and has 9THARAT Araraqqianggang The donor on the other hand calls himself HEICISTITATIST परमेश्वर परमभट्टारक सोमकुलतिलकस्त्रिकलिङ्गा- forafas, although he omits to add "Eyflaista. as found in somecharters of ययातिराजदेव On the contrary, no mention of his supremacy over the Kosala kingdom is found The village Foret granted, no doubt, can be located in this part of Bilaspur District included in Mahā Kösala country of old Three names of villages occur (१) किसरकेल्ला (R) लिजिर (3) There is a big village named E1 in the Padampur tract, District Bilaspur. About 20 miles from there, are two villages called forest one in the Raigarh State and the other in the Sarangarh State, cach on the opposite side about nine miles from the Mahānadı at Bālpur, Any of these two may be identified with the fafcat village granted to the Brahman ger may stand for fazilet in the prem Zamındari, Fratre may be the present day scotit village about six mile from Bolangir town in the Patna Feudatory State ESA The "कपिष्ठल" गोत्र and एकविशिष्ठ प्रवर of the grantee may also furnish some materials to ascertain the locality of the village granted. पृथुरा मुक्ति

The present charter mentions P1717779ní aq llie H17, or maternal uncle of perizia177171, at whoso mstatice the prant was made in a Bhilshu Samgha The scal brors the figure of a couchant Lull with a lump facine; left. In front of this figure of bull so the representation of a tudent On the bacl: side is the figure of a Kala a-waler jar. These go to prove that the donor, 159 a q7a meat, i most desoul worshipper of the great god $14. Hahasagupta's mother Viraļā and his grand uncle Isvaradeva were an amma worshippers of the Lord Voslinu as is cvidcnt from thic charicri of the latter and from the devicc on lus acal bearing figuren of conch, dircur and Garuda and the construction of a temple of 927 at Sirpur by the former. Ths omission in the present charicr of any such title at FAT31117. गज or त्रिकलिनाधिपति as sc as we find in the charters of 7E117777777 and महाशिव ययानि 15 suggestive of the fact that upall the time of Mahā Sıvagupta, the kingdom of GFF was not conquered by the Śripur Somavamsi Kings. Not only this, we have an absence of the word FACTfagfa which is found on the scal of ilahi Siva-Tivora. Deva. It is still unknown as to whom each of these two lings succecded but both of them arc styled as Anita, which fact goes to suggest that neither was the immcdiatc successor of cither and there must have been a probable ruler with FADHU utic between the reign ol these two Mahasivas It is to be noted that no mention of an is found in the charter, as we find in some of the records of and of his son, eta i The copy of the text of the inscription is reproduced clscwhere Was Ujjain ever in Mahakosala? it is the firm belief of some people that the present Nimar District in CP's was never under the old llahākosala kingdom Cunningham in his 'Geography of Ancient India' mentions that Burhanpur in the Nimar District was the extreme west limit of Kösala desh' In the remote pre-historic or paurar.c age of the reign of Ling Kuśa, the son of Lord Ramachandra, Ujjain was undoubtedly within his rcalm and was a part of Kõsala, as different from Uttara Kosala or Ayodhyā When king Kusha removed his scat of Government from me ( 11 ) to Ayodhyā Ujjain must have become the admistralive headquarters of the South Kosala the new capital city कुशमला or कुशारती being made over to Brahmang We find for Ujjain the name gaat or it in many Sanskrit works and this may account for the transfer of seat of administration from the capital Feria to Ujjain for convenience sahe as the ancient capital Ayodhya was far removed in the North Later in the time of the Mahābhārata the hala Titha 19 said to be within Kosala apparently Mahākosala To quote the text शोणस्य नमदायाश्च प्रभेद कुरुनन्दन । । 84 canto Vana Parva This refers to Mahākāla of 3*** as being one of the holy places of pilgrimage in this country From the above it seems that ATSTAT was once included within the geographical limit of Kosala apparently HTFTTTT or fauna and Nimar was not outside Malwa It may be remembered that Mahā kogala was referred to in unscriptions simply as Kosala prior to the Visit of the Chinese Pilgrim The following quotation will not be out of place herc The name Mahākosala for Chhattisgarh Proper and the adjoin ing territories cannot claim very great antiquity As is well known to scholars of Indian History this name occurs in Huen Tsang 8 memoirs written between 629 A D and 644 A D Prior to that we find in stone and copper plate inscriptions simply the name Kosala used for the great and powerful kingdom cxtending from the Ganges in the North to the Godavari in the South and from Ujjain in the west to Palt on the castern seashore in the district of present Balasore in Ongsa The famons Rõjim and Balodā platcs of the Supreme Lord of the entire hosala Tivaradeva of Pandu Vamsa which are in the box headed characters attributable to the 6th century AD tions the major portion of C P & as hosala only without any attribute of Maha or Dakhina And the Allahabad pillar inscrip men ( 12 ) tion of Samudra Gupta belonging to the 4th century AD. is as explicit as any other record It ennumerates our 'Kosala' country among the kingdoms of fruit and places it beyond doubt that the hero of the inscription never meant by it to refer to "Utiar Kösala" (Present Oudh in U. P) by which name the sacred land on the banks of the Sarayū, was called about the 4th century A. D The great Indian Bard immortal Kālıdāsa repeatedly describes the U. P. Kisala in the रघुवंशकाव्य as उत्तरकोशल which fact alone goes to prove that during his time there was a rival 'Kosala' in the South, with the glory and greatness of which, poet Kālıdāsa was not unaware The paper in It was India and America At the instance of my friend Mrs M P Albrecht, I contributed a short paper on 'India and America' to the 'Evangelical Tidings- A Weekly Paper, for young people, publıshed at St Louis, Mo. (North America) is thankfully reproduced here from the issue of that weekly dated December 10, 1933 (vol XIX Number, 50) India is a vast country and its history and civilization are the oldest the world The sacred Vedas, the pride of the Indian Pandıts, are universally acknowledged to be the oldest and earliest books available to the modern world Thousands of years ago there was an important kingdom named Mahālösala in Central India The famous river, Mahānadı, with its diamond mine, added to the glory of this beautiful land spread between the Ganges and the Godavari, carrying the major portion of Vindya valley and the Mekala Plateau, serving as a connecting link between North and South India. This Mahakosala kingdom is otherwise known to historian as 'Kosala' or South Kösala Its present representatives are the entire Chhattisgarh Division with its Feudatory areas, the major portion of the present Nagpur Division, and the western part of present Orissa This belt of land still abounds in dense forests and lofty mountains with artificial caves and natural caverns, with man-eating tigers and wild elephants, roaming in herds, with rock-paintings and rock-inscriptions of very remote antiquity. The whole of this area yet remains practically unexplored In 1921 our Mahā Kõsala Historical Society was fortunate in bringing to light the Vikram khol rock-inscription, believed by scholars and indologists to be about 4000 years old This rockinscription at Vikram khol (Vikram is the name of a valley, meaning (13) valley of strength) 18 believed to be the oldest and earliest specimen of Indian script to which Brahmi and Phoeincian scripts are supposed to owe their arigin This inscription is on the wall of a rock shelter l' measures 32 x7ft and has not yet been fully deciphered Along with the ancient writings and scripts I found a distinct hand mark on the top portion of the inscription It is at man s height from the raised floor-several feet above the level ground About ten miles from Vikram khol Hills there is another hill called Ulapgarh meaning the fort of Ulap (proper name) On the top of this hill there are the remains of an old fort There I found dug up marks or impressions on roch surface of a pair of human feet and several round and square and rectangular shallow pools or pits called kundas (in Sanskrit apparently meant for sacrifical pur noses) In this hill on a rock shelter known as Ushakute hundreds of feet above the plain there are inscribed letters prehistoric draw angs and figures and painted diagrams and a distinct hand mark wonderfully smooth on a plastered portion of the wall When I visi ted this jungly spot I had to face a living tigress which was just out from a neighbouring den Those who would have visited these two spots and other spots at Singhanpur and Nawagarh hills in the Raigarh State Chhatisgarh CP must have noticed on the walls of respective cave rocks there marks of figures and hands which no doubt stand for some auspicious symbol like Swastikas In some parts of the Mahāhosala kingdom especially towards the eastern portions, bordering on Orissa there still exists a religious custom of bedecking a newly built house or temple with hand marks which is the modern Chhatisgarhu dialect of the inhabitants is known Ilatha dena literally to give or put hand marks On the fifteenth day of the Hindu mouth Shravana corresponding to August the agriculturists and village people celebrate a puja (worship) called Hariyāli or Harch The main item of the worship consiste in collec ting at home all the agricultural implements after getting them properly and carefully washed in a tank river and applying hand marks to each Sweet are distributed to farm labourers and friends and a collective worship of the village derties is performed by the village priest In every famıly the head mistress applies the hand marks to her agricultural implements the plough the yohe etc In the case of newly built houses temples granaries etc the hand marks are put on by the mistress of the house after she has performed her ablution and offered her prayers to the family desty on the day as or ( 14 ) of the opening ceremony of the structure. The icmale" prepare a special kind of pastc from rico put into a pot full of water the previous night This wet rice they take out from the water-pol and grind with a fat stone and pestic to make it into a thick whitelooking paste The right hand palm 14 dipped in this paste and 19 presscd against the walls having red-carth or cow-dung paint or whitewashing Darts of hands are put on ordinary walls of dwelling: houses and are sorshipped in the name of the goddes llansalū Diese' and arc cxpressive of the symbol of goddess of propitiousness and happiness This hard-mark may be a symbol incaning, the protec. ling and cver-hclping hand of the mother As stated clscwhere, I have myself seen such hand marks both at Vikram Khol and Ushakuli along with pre-historic rock-drawing, paintings and inscriptions of grcat antiquity and have put my own right hand palm on the marl.s to feel their smoothners. All these Indian hand-marks are put on the walls of rock-shelters, high up on the top of hills, hundreds of feet above the plain, It is no small wonder to find similar hand and finger maths on rocks in Arizon, USA To guote Albert Coles from his most inter: esting paper "Exploring America's Yesterdays," published in the "Evangelical Tidings". In our great South west region there lused at Mesa Verde an ancient race They built homes high up on what are now deep canyon walls .In onc room of a chf-dwelling the smooth covering of a much plastcred wall has fallen away. There in the coating beneath, are the marks of fingers and hands' as plan as though some one had carelessly pressed against the soft plaster of a new home before it was wholly hard These marks of human hands tell a story of individuals who lived hundreds of scars agoyoung people, laughter, good times Possibly the father of thc family had just plastered the walls and his wife and children had come to see how it looked and placed their hands on the fresh covering saying in their own language. 'Is it dry yet Dad' ? Were then the cliff-dwellers of North America and the care-men or rock-shcltcr inhabitants of Mahākösala (Chhattisgarh-India) of the same races Was there similarity of cultures between the ancient people of these two distant lands 3 None can say, but the existence of some handmarks in both these countries g ves one furiously to think There is perhaps no country in Europe there belief in the porter of the eril eye in more general than in Italy. X X X X In Naples there charnis usually of red coral, are commonly to be seen in the shop mindors, cren the mention of the word 'fascino' or 'jettature', is sufficient to give rise to suspiciou. In certain streets in the old quarter of the city tho saiter observed that a large red hand as sometimes to be seen hanging from a balcony to protect those who lived in the house from the crilerc Survival of Fitch craft in the 20th century by CJ.S Thompson, Illustrated lodia (Calcutta) April 5, 1937, Was Bhandah – The Capital of Rituparna? - The late lamented Rai Bahadur Dr Hirālāl in his paper enhtled Pre historic Berar published in the 1st Annual of the Sāradasrama os Yoetmal (Saka 1855) tried to prove that Bhandak in the Chanda Digrict of the Central Provinces had the honour of being the capital of hosala Culed over by Rituparna under whom the famous king Nala husband of Damayants had taken service as a charioteer He discussed the point in his own masterly way and came to the conclusion that the distance bet aveen Kundinapura in Berar (Vidarbha) and Bhāndak in Kosala (Dr Hiralal did mean it to be identical with South or Mahahcsala) which is about 80 miles was in favour of his locating Rituparna s cap tal In his paper on Thc Cxtent and capital of Dakshina Kosala published in the Indian Antiquary Sept 1933 the Ra: Bahadur sought to cstablish his theory in the following words RB Dr Hiralal Theory We shall now proceed to locate the capital of the ho ala country In the earliest time when Nala hing of Nishadha country was austed from his kingdom he started towards the South and leaving his wife Damayants in the forest to tale care of herself he moved on and arrived in the territory of the harkotala Nága who was evidently the ruler or the Nagpur country He afterwards reached the capital of Kosala and ook service ns a charioteer of Rituparana the king of the country The only ancient town which could have lain on the line of Nala & march having traditions of visits from the heroes of the Mahābhārata times is Bhāndak (old Bhadravatı) 16 miles north of Chāndā town the present hcad quarters of the district of the same name That this alone could be the residence of Rituparna is proved by the fact that Nala once drove the latter to his friend the king of Vidarbha whose capital was at haundinyapur in approximately 11 hours in a chariot with only four horses Now the distance between Bhandak and Laund nyopur is about 80 miles as the crow ftics Allowing 20 miles for the inevitably circuitous route taken by a horse-driven vehicle the speed of minc miles an hour 18 plauuble and creditable performance of the horses under a good driver The other known capitals of Dat hipa husala are Surpur (old Srípural in the Raipur Distinct and Tummana and Ratanpur in the Bilaspur district The first of thcec Sripur 18 the nearest to haundinyapurn but 14 lics as many as 250 miles away in a straight line on the map This ( 16 ) a would give a run of 28 miles an hour for the chariot, and if the windings of the road are taken into account, in the same proportion as is the case of 'Bhāndak' the pace would amount to 29 miles an hour for continuous run of 11 hours without any change, which is impossible in fact, this rate would exceed the motor-car speed attainable in these days, if not beat a railway train Mr Palit's Contention Mr Akhil Chandra Pälıt, Vakıl High Court, Cooch Behar, who is a famous poet and antiquarian has thoroughly criticised Rai Bahadur Dr Hirālal's yiews as expressed in the above quotation Mr Pālıt has favoured our Society with a lcarned paper in which he has conclusively proved that the capital of King Ritupurna was Ayodhyā on the Sarayı river and not Bhāndak in the Chandā district in CP Commenting on the above quotation Mr Pālit goes to write Thus the learned R B (Dr. Hiralal) has dismissed the claim of Sırpur (Śrípur of old) to the honour of being the capital of Dakshina Kösala country, and given his judgment in favour of Bhāndak We, however, do not hold any brief for any of the rival claimants The whole burden of the argument, advanced by the Rai Bahadur in favour of Bhāndak, rests entirely on the ground, that the capital city cof Southern Ksõala must have been situated at such a distance from the city of Kaundinyapur, the capital of Vidarbha, that an expert chanoteer with a team of four horses of the highest speed, could reach the city from Rituparna's capital in 11 (eleven) hours We regret very much to say that the Rai Bahadur, in attempting to locate the capital of Dakshina Kosala basing his theory on the ancient story of Nala and Damayantı as related in the Mahābhārata, has fallen into confusion From the manner he has proceeded on his grounds, with an absolute confidence, it appears that he had not the time to peruse the original version First of all, Nala--the hero of the tale, was neither one of the Mahābhārata heroes, nor was he a contemporary of any of them On the other hand he (Nala) was many centuries anterior to Yudhistira to whom the story of Nala was narrated by a sage named 'Brihadāsua'. The Solar king reigning at Ayodhyā at the time of the Great War' was one Brihadvala, who met his death at the war at the hands of Abhimanyu (Arjuna's son) Secondly, Rituparna, with whom Nala took service and (Arjuna's so) Secondly, Rituparna, with whom Nala took service and shelter during the exile, was a king of the Solar line His capital was at Ayodhya in the Northern Kõsala The Nāga king who met Nala advised him to go to Ayodhyā and to meet king Rituparna Nala left the country of Nāga king and reached Ayodhyā on the 10th day The ( 17 ) relevant portions of the text from Vana Parva of the Mahābhārata are as given below That the distance of Ayodhyā from the capital of Damayantı s father in Vidarbha was a hundred Yojanas (800 miles) 18 also mentioned clearly in the following verses राजाऽपिचस्मयन भीमो मनसा समचिन्तयन् अधिक योजनशत तस्यागमनकारणम् ।। प्रामान वहूनतिक्रम्य नायगछद् यथातथम् अल्पकार्य निनिर्दिष्ट तस्यागमनकारणम् ॥ Thus by quoting from the Mahābhārata and other Sanskrit works Mr Palit has proved that the capital of Rituparna was the famous cily of Ayodhya As stated by the sage Brihadasya the reciter of the romantic ancient story it 19 clear that (1) Rituparna Nala s Patron was a descendant of Ishvaku of the Solar line (11) His capital was at Ayodhyā on the Sarayū river (11) The city of Ayodhyā was some one hundred Yojans away from the capital of the Vidarbha country The words of Damayantı to her husband Nala are also very explicit on the point त्वामृते नहि लोकान्य एकान्हा पृथिवीपते । ममर्था योजनशन गन्तुमवर्नराधिप । Chap 76 Vana Parva When the capital of Rituparna is expressly stated to be Ayodhyā there remains no neecssity of putting forth the claim of Bhandak to have that honour In fact there has not yet been found any tangible proof to show that Bhāndal was ever the capital of Dakshina or Malakosala ( 18 ) There is no evidence to show that the stone inscription of Bhavadeva Ranakesarı (now in the Nagpur Museum), did belong to Bhandak and was unearthed there Even if it did belong, there is nothing to prove that Bhāndak was, at the time of Chinese Pilgrim's Visit (during the 7th century AD) the capital of Mahākösala, or of a part of it It might, no doubt, have been a very important commercial centre in the 7th century AD and thereabcut, with a strong fort, and a Branch of the Ruling Dynasty would have liked to have its seat there But here too there has been found no proof till now. Excavations of undertaken might Teveal new facts The question as to what city of the known names Sripura, Sarabha. pura, Pravarapura or Padmapura was the capital of Mahākösala remains unsolved The location of old 'Kushāvati' city or Kuśasthalı, capital of Kuśa, son of Lord Rāmchandra of Ayodhya--the hero of the Rāmāyana-has never been attempted by any Kosalan antiquarian Recently some writers have tried to show that Kushävatı or Kuśasthali was the old name of Ujjain, but this too well known city can't be placed in the defiles of the Vindhya Kuśāvatı or Kśasthali was the capital of Dakshina Kõsala country under king Kuśa, who had to shift from there to settle at Ayodhyā his ancestral capital town as we know from Kālıdāsa's Raghuvamsa Kāvyam A Unique Andhra coin Attributed to Apilaka On 6-12-34 this most interesting copper coin was recovered by me from the band of gold-dust washers who periodically visit Bālpur One of the gold-dust washers came across it while washing earth and sand for gold-dust in the very bed of he Mahānadi within the village boundary of Bālpur (District Bilaspur CP) 1 partly deciphered the legend upon it and on 10-12-34 wrote to Mr K N Dikshit, MA, the then Superintendent Archäological Section, Indian Museum, Calcutta, about this discovery of our Society pliance with his wishes as contained in his D O dated 17th December 1934, this coin along with some more silver and copper coins were forwarded to Mr Dikshit on 21-12-34 for being exhibited at the annual meeting of the minusmatic Society which was to be held at Allahabad In com- ( 19 ) Unfortunately due to delay in their transmission by post none of the coins under reference could be exhibited at Allahabad that year Later on the Andhra coin was cxhibited at the exhibition held in the Hall of the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1935 to which the coin was lent by Mr Dikshit A short notice on the coin under the heading A New Āndhra Cain appeared in the Daily Papers soon after the exhibition Mr Dikshit has since prepared a paper on it for the Numusmatic Supplement A portion from it is thankfully quoted below In the Purānic lists of Andhra kings there occurs a name which with slight variants may be taken as Apılala with a reign period of 12 years Along with several other names of Andhra kings known from the almost unanimous testimony of the Purānas but not yet been con firmed by archäological evidence (eg Lambodara Nemi Krishna and Pravillasena or Purındrasena) this king has not yet been recognised as historical and but for the present find would have long remained so The authenticity of the Purānic tradition is thus strikingly confirmed but it is nevertheless true that the actual order in which the kings ruled as given in the Puranas cannot be followed In the present instance the place of Apılaka in the Purānas is almost immediately after Satakarnı and thus comparatively early in the dynastic list The present coin cannot however be ascribed to an early Ardhra suler on numismatic grounds and must rather be classed with the eastern issues of later rulers like Śn Rudra and Sri Yajña Satakarnı and relegated to the end of the second century AD The elephant type of the coin of Apilaka is quite distinct from the other types depicting this motif The early lead potin and copper coins of Malwā fabric show the animal either standing or walking left or a small figure standing right The nearest approximation in style to the present elephant is the figure on the round lead cains of Śrı Yaşña Satakarnı issued in Andhradesa (Rapson s bat PI VII 164) but in size art and execution the present type by far superior to the other The other details such as the coad in front and the symbol above are also unique Discussing the epithet Śivash Mr Dikshit has come to the con clusion that Sivasrı Āpilaka was a scion of the Andhra family but had an independent principality at the north easternmost limit of the R psori Catalogue of Andt and W Kshatrapa co as p IXVI The Vayu calls the king Apl to the M lsya Apil ka and the Vșnu Div laka while the Balmand correctly states the name as Ăp laka Pu an ( 20 ) indhra Empire over which he ruled sometimes at the end of the secon r beginning of the third century A.D.
