Letters on Ayurveda 27398 Preface Within the span of last 42 yearr glorious , rervice to the Rasasbala Aushadhashram Rajvaidya Shri has contributed various articles independently or in the form of letters, oo many a subject, the main amongst them being Ayarveda. Philosophy, Jyotish, Itibas, Politics aod many other Eubjects are also treated at length. Hundreds of scholars Indian and Foreign approach him with a volley of questions on different sabjects. He answers them all at fall length to quell their cariosity and to convince theo with satisfaction. Thou if the biography of Rajvaidya Shri is made ready it would occupy a space of 1000 pagea for bis correspondence ba various vital sobjects of Sbastric importance. If at all pablished in fatare the reader till gain moch to know in the subject of his own interest. . Rajvaldya Shri's recent letters on Ayurveda, discossiog vital problems aboat ito aplift in Free India, were moch liked by the readers, Indian and Foreigo, many leading Joarnais gave them wide publicity and friends and well-wishers got them typed and circulated. Thus, last three years' corrcspoodenca on Ayorveda was much spread and hence mach demanded. We Bopplied the type-writtea copies so far possible, but the demand being heavy, we now publish it under this booklet. This booklet does not cover the whole lot. The rest, will be pablisbed lates on. The main theme of the letters is Agorveda, bot discarriag other problems accroing from the viewpoints pot fortyard by the scholars, it also encomparses many a sabject. Ayurveda has been woefully neglected since one thounod year is the oasteady admioistration of lodia. Daring their domain of 200 years the last ralen - the Britishen viewed at Ayurveda with rengeance aod laboured for its total craldcatioa to place ibeir owa Allopathy on the pedestal, falling that vacant II Bat now that the Rule of our own has stepped in Ayurveda breathe the air of confidence for iti aplift in the land of its birth where it is regretſally annoticed these daye by its own countrymen. When a country becomes free, it almi at aniversal progress in various fields, for the wellare and uplift of the nation. At this stage a science that is concerned with the health of the teemlóg million should be respscitated and it is quite pataral that Ayarveda hopes for ita aplift at the hands of our present patriotic administratore. At a time when even the Western people have began evincing disdain towards Allopatby because of its ever changing theories and crael experimentation on the ingocent, and when they are gradually inclined towards Ayurveda, realislag its pristiae glory, universality and unflinchiognens of principles, it becomes incumbant or us now to give dae importance to the problem of its progress-glory and uplift. We hope that this will thus be neefal to our administrators and countrymen who are interested in the subject, for making concentrated efforts to serve this sacred scriptare. My phore, tbough appearing circumscribed, is one which can achioro the welfare of tho whole country. According to my plan, "Mahatma Gandhi Dhanvantar! Nagar" must bo este blished at Rajkot in Saurashtra, the land of birth of Mahatma Gandhiji. On 27th January, 1915 Pangashlok Gandhiji was prosented by my Institution the Ragashala Ausbadbashrana with an address, wherein," laupi. red by feeling of honour for his conspicuong services for India in Africa, the epithet of Mahatma was first conferred on him by me. I was the first to offer him this public address in the assembly of five thousand local citisens when be had first come to Gondal after his retard from Africa. The words of blessings. wblob be bad then uttered for my Ipatitation and uplift of Ayaryoda bare been many times printed with that Address of wine. To quoto them ; "Vaidyaraj is a profound soholar of Sanskrit and Ayurveda. The Rasaghala established by him fs serving the people through Ayurveda. The literature published by Rasashala 18 very useful to the public. I used to read it in Africa. I am much pleased with words whloh such a scholar has used for me in the address. I shall, for ever cherish them. I have a great regard for Ayurvede. Thle Is 10 saclenl ladlen scienco to keep up health of crores of men llvlag lo lacs of Indian villages.

I recommend every man to shape and Ilye his ille on the basis of , Ayurveda. I offer my blessings to the Rasashala Aushadhashrom and vaidysraj. May they be ablo to render still more glorious service to Ayurveda. As & result of this blessing, my Lastitation has prospered and attained to-day so honoured place among tho scholars aod edacational and other ipalitates of the world. Considering these words #biob Mabalmajl ked spoken for Ayurveda thirty four years before and on bis lending in India, 1 thiok, the best memorialfor bim of loog- standivg and pational Interest must be tho uplift of Ayurveda and its aļlied Bhestras. This work can be saccessfully accomplished by the establishment of Blahatma Gandbi Dhanvantari Nagar ia Sacrasbtra. The principal parts of Dahatma Gandhi Dhaprantri Nagar,' besides sub-divisional 09ee, will be 1. Ayurveda Arya Dpaobar Shastra and Siddha Vanaspati Shastra 2. Arya Rasayan Shastra and Deb Siddhi. 3. Uttar Prayogshala ( Laboratory ) for Dhatuvad ( Alchemy ), Ratna shastra and Loh siddhi. 4. 'Poorva Prayogshala for Collection and Praotical researon of Sanskrit Manusaripts on all subjeots. Io the heart of Mahatama Gandhi Dhanyantari Nagar, there will be erooted a Dhanvantari temple, whore-io God Shree Dhanvantari. will bo installed with due rites. His worship will be gone through daily according to Vedic precepts. People from India and all other countries of the world will bave free and fall access for Dershanem, Pojadam and Arche- Dan of this deity who will bless Bharatyaisha in every sespect. In the Yarious branches of this Nagar, there will be kept images of Habatma Gandhi, depicting different periods of his life. The Dhanyantri Nagar will require for its establishment a site of fiyo lacs of rupees. To make it horever a full-fledged Instilation, - fifly lacs, of zopeeg will have to be spent brand by Another sapal amount of filty lecs should be disbursed apart for this Nagar, which, when in fall. working order in a year, will bring an income of laos of rupees. The description of the principal parts of the Dbaptantari Nagar is as below: 1. Ayurveda Arya Upachar Shastra and Siddha Vadaspti Shastra. Some of the Indian Schulars of Alopatky hayo no knowledge or i esperience of Ayurveda. Receiving coly English education and caltaro, il they tay or opine asylbióg against Ayorgeda, if io improper and 1 - B udsotoplable. Allopathy has come into existence since two hundred years. Inspite of the Government support to it, its pripciples are unblable. Palienta may be experimented upon today according to come principles of allopatby, bat a short time alter, some scholars or research workers declare thoea principles to te wrong and barmſal. Compared with these, the principles of Ayurveda, decided opon by ancient rages and arcetics, tbongands of*- years before, remain zpohaoged for all times and are aniformly applicable to all peoplo liviog in any part of the world. There are bundreds of Ayarvedic printed books and wonderfal band written apprioted Sambitus on soch rabjecls as Rasayan Staatra, Vanaspati Sbastrs, Dbaluvad Sahstra, Ratna Shastra, Sargers, Anatomy, etc. Experiments outlined in these books and pass, are ko esay, accoesibls and acceptable to all that rich and poor people in towns and villages can avail themgelres of them according to their fitness, needs and means. Tbose of the allopathio doctors in India and abroad ach as Dr. Wilson, Dr. George Clarke, Dr. wire, Dr. Warden, Dr. Tribhovandag, Dr. Pranjivar das Mehta of Jamoager and others wbo bare studied Ayarveda, express great praise for it. Ayoryada bpo received Do support from tho pajamount power since royen bundred years, Darlag fivo bundred years of Maslim role, Unani system obtained state patronage and encouragement and poder two boodred years of British rale, full help was offered to Allopatby. The British destroyed Indian industries with an aim to enrich tbeir country. Pareding the same policy, they imported into India allopathic mediolaes worth crores, manufactured in England and adversely affected the minds the bodies, fae financial condition and religions iobtincts of our people. Despite this, Ayor veda has remained alive, solely on the support of rulere, loving old traditions xod the people. With the establishment of our National Government since two years, I feel sure that Ayurveda will be fally encouraged. It will by this davelop itself to such an extent as to removo in a few years cor dependence abroad for medicines and will also give great benefit to otber peoples of the world. Out of forly crores of people in Iodia, fire to soyed crotee have been asing allopathic drage under the British role. The otbers live on Ayurveda apd avail themselves of its bepalit, through Ayurvedic pharmacies, thousands of more or less learped Vaidyas, experienced old persene teslding in different villages and forest dwellers who haow weil' tle aliſereinskis vf the jinnib. 8 ir l' wundthat inspite of the bundred years' pazemount role of the Britisb in India, twenty eight crores of its people have kept themselves away from foreiga medicines. Some eapportes of allopalby in our patioas) goreypment wish to place allopathic doctors within the reach of all the villages of India and try to lead the Government for it, but they will not be able oan to accomplish their desire even in two hundred years to come; whereas Ayurveda will da so rucessfully within only ten years. II. Arya Rasayan Shastra and Deh Siddht: The preceptors of Arya Rarayan Shastra hayo made many diacoveries in their field and formulated definite principles after centuries of labour. We road in the Mahabharat, tho Rowuyana, tho Paradır, the History and Jain 'Bbastras that people oan live healthy for hundreds of years, care dispade incurable and can make their bodies strong, long-lived and robust on the basis of these discoveries and principles. The continuity of this Rasayan Shasira as from preceptors to papils bus boen broken sinoe seved hundred years. Hence we do not see its 260 or benefit today. People knowing how to prepare auch Siddha Rasayanas are few and persons to get thema prepared are also wanting. In days gone by when that continuity was obsorted and state patronage was given to Restyno Shastras, persons with auch Siddhies were existing and thoy. Dzed to come forward. Io this Resayan Sbastra, there are described hundreds of medicines and various Siddha and Divya Ausbadbies containing an admixtoro of mercury, other metale, Upadbatos, Ratoas, Uperatpas etc. ule whereof can curo tuberculosis, asthma, diabetes, cancer, paralysir, eppondicitis, typhoid, Jeprosy, plaguo and other disesses regarded incurable. This department will manufacture inch medicines to give their benefit to the people. With the establishment of Dhanraptari Nagar, this Rasayen Shastra and its Prayogas can be Availed of to tho great development of our indigenous berbs and plants together with the Samanyaya of a}l Divya Siddha Rasangbadbles, being wasted away at Dominal prioes. III. Uttar Prayogshala (Laboratory) for Dhatavad (Alohemy), Ratna Shastra and Loh siddhi. This Shastra can free the country from disease and poverty. With its 'aid, sidabi can be had to turn mercary and other metals into gold. Men knowing this Shastra or its echolars had no encouragement onder foreign role. On the contrary, they bed to live in fear. But if Our Bational government will give consideration to this subject, India can be a very riob, slrong and healtby country within few years in line with othor countries of the world by developing this Shastra. In the famous Birls Templo at New Delhi, there is one terBO CD Dhalavad Shastra: सिद्ध रसे करियेऽहं निर्दारिद्यगदं जगत् ।। " With the icomplishment of Rasa, I shall make the world free from-poverty and distage." Most of the works on Dhaloyad Shastra aro in the form of mes, and they deal with eighteen Badekaras of Parad (Bercury), Bubbokshli Parad and hundreds of other" Prayogas. - Siddha Kalka prepared on their basin can torn mercury and other metals inlo gold and silver. There bro in India Rasayan Bbestris, who know this secret, science Apd ils Prayogal bat lbey do not come out for (fear of Government. Bat if an Institution like the Dhanyentari Nagar comes into existence, snob scholars can be found out and taken advantage of. These Siddhi Rasayans contributing to Loh Siddhi are really for so for Deb siddbi. To test them only, ihey are used for Loh Siddhl. This Siddha Kalka kerpe men bealiby, enables them to live for bandoreds of years and confers on them power to go and come from Swarga Lok and Chart dra Lok. To assare you of the trath of Dhatayad, I give below an insta. nce that bad taken placa foar or five years before: My friend Pandit Krishna Pal Shastri of Gurakh Rasayan Shala 'át Bevores had accomplished this Ras Siddhl und Lob Siddhi, 'I bad soon ils Prayoga in person and in the presence of many Vaidyas, vihen I had gone to Lahore as the President of All India Ayorvedio Congress. Then Jalan was gone ibrough Soraros Qraas in Babboksbit Parad, tbe mercury ate up the gold with no increase in weight. With the help of his Siddha "Kalka, he had thas tarned mercury into gold. Peadit Krishna PalBhastri had demonstrated this experiment of converting mercury into gold in 1940 1941 at Hardwar and Bila house New Delbi is the presence of Sbeth Shri Jugal Elshore Bıria, Sbri Sitaramji Kbemka-Secretary Delbi Burla Mill, Sbri Amistlul V. Thakkar-obiel Secretary of All India Larijan Soyak Sangb, Isto Sbri Mabador Desai-Mabatma Gandhiji's Bocsotary, Goswami Shri Ganesh Dattji of Lakoro, Orief Engineer Mr. Wilson, Shri Neogi Hari and others, when is thirty eight lbs. of mercary he put ono tola of bis Siddba Kalka apd giving fire turned it into gold within few hours. This gold fetched & value of Rs. 75,000f according to rate then existing. After good tests with acids etc. that gold was found to be quite pore. Pandit Krishna Pal Shastri had apdergoue constant oopsiderable labour for five to six years from 1935 to 1940 and had attained this Siddhi from Arya Dhatavad Shastra at great expense. The mapasoripta apd Prayoga Granthe, on whose basis ke bad obtained this Siddhi, are there in the Rasa shala oss. Granth Bhandar but we have found no timo to research them thruagh Prayoga. It is reported that this Panditji bad died in A. D. 1943 while coming from Beperes to Delhi, but famour goes too of his being taken away underground. At that line yer in Edropo was going on and gold was required. Looking to these circumstancer, God knows how far trus is the popular beltef of his being kidoopped Away. It God faroars cat country, mis. oa Dhatoyad and its Prayogrs in the B Rauasbala's collection of ancient mig. will be made use of in the Dhanya. -atri Nogar. Saocess can be boped in this dirpotion within about two years, scoording as the facility of mods be bad, though Pandit Krisbus Pal Sherma had taken about five to eis years. If these Prayoges will be taken ap and this Panditji is bov alive free, he will come - forward to assist as in this work aod fulfil his row. There are many wonderfol Prayogas in this Dhanratri Nagar on diamonds, rubies, pearls kod other jewels, which too will be experienced in the laboratory of the Dhanvantari Nagar. TO f (Forther Attempt ] Madaniya Dr. Babu Shree Rajendra Prasad, President, Gandhi National Memorial Fand, 1, Queen Victoria Road, NEW-DELHI Sir, I acknowledge with thanks yours of 27th July, 1949, bat regret yoár miranderstanding arrived at without carefully going through my letter of the 12th July, 1949, a copy of which I rend herewith. Ia it I had outlincd a plan for Mahatma Gandhi Dhanvantri Nagar-one of the best ways in which Gandhi National Memorial Fand can be atilised for pablic welfare and loterest. I do not opine that this Dhanvantari Nagar may be a Provincial Institation and of private ownership. I 'bave:plaaned it:la'& way that it can be a poblic or Goveramcot institation, ito floancial axpects to be managed by a Committee of Scholars of Ayarveda and Rasayan Shastra, appointed by the Government Or Gandhi Smarak Trost. It will be an All-India Institution and a. Seat Central in the spbere of Ayorocca, Arya Ramayan Sha. stru, Vadaspati Sbastra and their rcrearch Institates etc. achicving the good of the people of each proviaces of India. My alm in writing that letter is that if this Dbanvantari Nagi'to established, I am willing to offer it the services of my Institation, the Ratzsbala Aubadhaubram and of 17,000 mn. on 40 to 42 different cobjccts in the Saratwati Grapth Bhandar of the Rarashala valoed at 19 to 18 lace of ropeet without any hope of reward. 1 Gaodhiji had visited my Ratasbala ia 1915 A, D. when I had pretented him an Addrces using for him the Epithet of MAHATMA for the first time. The words of high praisa and regard for Ayurveda which he had then attered in reply, are many times printed in the Rasasbala literature and also quoted. in the letter addressed to you. What has actuated me to send you this plan of Dhanvantari Nagar is that Ayarveda has been my life-breath for 40 years and an ardent desire that Mahatmaji's words, spoken thirty four years before for the aplift of Agorveda, may today be realised in effect, especially when a sovereign independent democratic government has beea established in our country. I have expressed a desire for the establishment of Mahatma Gandhi Dhanvantari Nagar at Rajkot under a reason * that Saurashtra is the Land of Mahatmaji's birth and Rajkot is ite centre where he had passed his life from infancy to his departare for Africa. This is also the province, where fall facilities cap be bad for obtaining herbal, mineral, animal and other drogs and raw materials, required by Ayurveda from forest of Girnar, Gir, Barda and other places, I have hence to request that you will go through my letter of the 12th Jaly 1949 agais, careially consider it and let me know your views on the plan therein to oblige mc. Respectfal biessioga: Oar Iostitation Tae RASASHALA AUSNADNASIRAN bas been serving the people of our country sicce forty years with its scientifio À yarvedic medicines aod literature. It has also continged to BOTTO since then the roral population of lodia by giving them the benefit of Vaidyag, prepared or trained by our Iostitation in tho systematic stody of Ayurveda. Now when democracy bas been established to India, the Government-is thinking of a plan to placa medical relief and Aciontific treatment of diseasap withia the roach of twenty five crores of people living in Tadian villages, but allapathy or allopathic doctors alone would not be sacceaefol to accomplish this purpose. Bence coosideration is being given overywhere to give to these people the becefit also of Ayurveda. Io parguance of this plao, wa havo recast the carricalom of Ayurvedic study in our Institute and beg to send herewith a copy of the prospectus of oar Ayorveda Vidyalaya. Its other copy is sent by a separate bookpost, We sball be very grateful if you will go through it. and kindiy favour as with your valued suggestions, opinion, and coostractive guidance, wbich our lostitation will warmly follow. 2. Modern allopathic treatment, which is prohibitively expeasive and beyond the reach of middle-class people, is obtained mostly in torns. Rarely 5 P. C: of the village popolation can avail themselves of it, This goes to show that oat of 36 crores of Indian popalationig 25 crores of village folk bave, been depe. nding on Asurveds, sioce bondreds of years, for their protection of bealth and freedom from ordioary diseases. They bave been 11 getting this relief from persons who have imbibed medical knop ledge traditionally or from practitioners scientifically traine onder learded Vaidgay. Each provincial Goveromeat is benc thinking to prepare Vaidya: by starting Ayarveda Vidyalaya withio'its limits and imparting them therein in the regional lang aage the scientific kaowledge of Ayurveda, for upkeep of gooi health and treatment of common diseases. If this work be comme aced immediately, the village peoplec ao have protection agai nst diseases easily and in short time. It will also relieve to: great extent the heavy financial barden on the Central and Provincial Governments for medical aid, 3. To consolidate their sale in India, the British had aimed to keep as dependent on foreign medicines, as for other thing! to benefit their motherland, they a ed to import into our coantry medicines worth crores of rapees from Ergland. With that view, they alſorded no encouragement to Ayarveda, which hal a bright and glorious past, which has protected the people irom all diseases since centuries astretch and made them very robogt and long-lived. Framing it as a low, they mintained a policy which fomented discord between doctors and Vaidyas, creating too in the former a sedle of disregard for Ayorveda. Their object way accomplished and Ayorveda rece v d no opportunity for development, They cool; not bowever sacceed in lessening the feeling of people of ladia, especially the rural ones, for Ayarveda. Not only this, but they could not also propagate among these people so great a use of loreign medicinex, as tbey had wished. Under reven hundred years of Muslim and British rule, Ayurveda could make no progress. It bas yet remained alive and able to serve, for the reason that crores of people in oor country have cherished it in their hearts with religioas saoctity. 4. The attitade of our democratic Government seems to be macb in fasoar of allopathic doctors. Its wish seems to be to provide allopathic doctors, medicides and treatment 10 every village of oor copatry. If this is true, the mission is boond to fail, for considering the most complicated problems which coofroat the Governmeats at pregeat and entail beavy szpenses, 12 our Governments cannot at present afford to provide medical · relief to all villages. When the present problems be solved in a few years, and the Government be placed in round finaacial position, it will yet be doubtſal whether the Government will be able to tackle satisfactorily tbis question of medical help in the cext twenty five years, throogh allopathic doctors and medicines, Alien British Goveroment conld not do abis work within hundred and fifty years of its rale. This qaestion becomes more complex for our democratic Government when circamitances are so adve- TIC Hence to protect the peo le of India, so diverse in caste, religion, modes of living, loud and climate, from diseases, to safeguard their health and to care the diseases which they may be suffering from, Ayurvedic medicines and knowledge of Ayar. veda are solely essential. It is to the beoefit of the Government that the Indiaas mostly love scientific Ayarvedic medicines. 5. 95 P. C. of the patients euffer from ordinary discases, which can be cored by Vaidyas with simple vegetable, herbal and mineral drugs obtainable from riverside, mountain or a jangle near each village, provided they be trained in the knowledge and asc cf this prodncis in their provincial language - a task not difficult. If thir be done, hage amount of money spent abroad for purchase of medicines will remain in our country and the cost to the Government to provide modical rellel to our cvery village will be considerably less. Looking to the present financial problems of the Goveroment and those which may be imagiocd'to arise ia fatore, it shoold at oncc decide and adopt a policy to cacourage Ayurveda and to start in cach province Ayurveda Vidyalayas for preparing GRAMYA CHIKITSAKAS ia provincial languages. It shoald also extcod proper help and cacooragement to lostitations like ours, which are working in this direction. This is the only way to provide macdical help in villages easily and at less coit. The people too will bs satisfied thereby, for they love Ayarveda since primeval times and will obtain from it the secd: of Natural life. Ao:veda bzing cocodrag:d a way will be pived for its research and development. Researches In Ayurveda itu Rasayan Shastra sod Alchemy will greatly add de inalta lume and prme Soud and will ensleb ont cognir 6. You know Revered Mahatma Gandhiji's strong belief that the people in villages should be saved from the-Enare of foreign medicines by giving them the knowledge to cure their diseases with simple herba, growing by the side of rivers, stre mlets or jungles. You can read in the prospectas (page 11th) the words uttered by Panya blok Gandhiji in reply to an Address of welcome presented to bim by my Tastitation on 27th January, 1915. They express bis regard for Agarveda and his desire to encourage it, believing that it was solely for the welfare of the villagers. Ayurveda'r glory is so fast, bright and ennobling that hoors, days or months aro rather fee to describe it. The rulers and the ruled in India also know it folly well. Ayurveda is a Science as old as the Vedas, of which the poople hayo atalled themselves bioco thousands of years. O. of the people in Indis, Nepal, Ceylon, Barma and Siam avail themselves of Ayarfeda eten to-day, keep op their health, and got rid of their diseases, A sorvey of the British administration for two hundred years in India will lead our popular leaders to know that the people in the past used to live for more years and kept themselves free from diseases ia a better way than they do to-day. Nowadays, the diseases have greately increased. Nen ones are yet coming into being. The bodies of the people havo Frown weak, devoid of vitality lod disesse-ridder. The western method of treatment for these diseases is being found by the people very costly. On the other band, Ayurveda has been interwoven with the very lile of the people in Indis, jast like religion. Under thousand years of foreiga rulo. it has received Do opportunity for progress; yet it has remained as the very breath of our people. It will really be considered an ill lack of Bbarat, if our democratio government will not look to this stete of things. The riversides, stresmlets and forests of seven Jacs of towns and villages in Indis, wblch abound in varied herbal, animal and mineral drugs are verily the Aasbadbalayas in themselves. They can be takeu advantage of by the government only if it alforda encouragement to Ayarveda. The Indians have been tokiog tbeir benefit through Vaidyas. By doing so, not ovly will the people keep themselves free from diseases, but crores of topees being drained away abroad for purchase of foreign medicines like the flow of the Gango, will also be saved. The British has ased allopathy as a means to perpetuate their role in Iodia sod to take away enormous amounts of money to Eogland. It was their policy deliberate to patronino Allopatby, disregarding, Ayurveda If oor popular government will continue the same policy, Ayarteda will reqairo como more years for its oplift bat Bharat will surely witness its downfall or degeneration. 19 GOLD FROM MERCURY In 1947 it was reported in the April issue of the Ayurveda Maba Sammelana Patrika, the official organ of the All India Ayurvedio Congrees, that Pandit Krisboapal Slastry of Beoszes demonstrated before the late Mabader Dessi, the Secretary of Mahatma Gandhi, the converting of mercury into gold. For & second time, he demonstrated in 1947 ia the Birla House in the presence of Sait Jagal Kishor Birla “and a number of othar prominent people by converting 36 pounds of metallic mercary into gold which was, after all critical evaluation, auctioned and sold away for Rs. 75 000 and the amount was given over on the spot in obarity. Thus the manufacture of gold from mercury is no longer & myth or fiction and that it is a solid fact, was proved to the bilt. DEMONSTRATION I. September last year, we were informed by His Holiness Shree Charana Tortba Mabaraj that he was promised by Pandit Krishnapal Shastry that he would participate in the organisation of a scientifio laboratary in the R Hasbala Auskadbasbrane Goodal and that the organisation which w89 fairly in progress, had to be stopped due to the disappearance of the Penditje after the demoustration in the Birla House. On enquiry we were informed by Birla that Pandit Krishnapal Shr- Etry became a Swarga-wasi. On forthsr enquiry, we lourat from Kaviraj Pratap Sinba, the principal of the Ayorvedic College, Bepares Hinda University, that after the demise of Pandit Krishaapal Sbastry, bis brother was also not seen and no information wag available about his wtereabouts. We were at tbe same time told that the demonstration of manufactare of gold from wercary was a fact and that he had witnessed ibe demonstration.. NEED FOR REVIVAL We are now afraid that the whole of the investigation experience and learning of this extremely useful art and science was lost to as especially when we are economically depressed at the present time. It is only * scant consolation to learn that the whole of the manuscripts from wbich t'de 'late Patru rez! Yustisert the 178 xl wr wilahla in the Ragasbala in Gondal and that His Holiness Sbre. Charana Terths Mabaraj is well acquainted with the process adopted by the Paoditji. It Temsios to be seen how much of the lost art coald now be revived without the illastrious Krishaapal Shastry.

20 Instead of these sporadic private and individaal efforts, it would be appropriate, eren expedient, if the Bedares Hiado Vaiversity, itself takes ap the mattor and accommodates the experimenta og Dhata Vaads and allied sciences, inviting, if necessary, experts liko His Holiness Shri Cha- 102 Tirtha Mabaraj and others, creating scholarships and fellowsbips to Ayurveda and Indian sciences. ARTIFIOIAL GEMS At the same time, it will be the sacred daty of the present and past presidents of All India Ayurvedic Cougrers to start in pestigations into tha matter and organing support and co-operation for the scheme of the Bolentifio laboratory proposed and perhaps in progress in the Rajanhals Aushad bashram in Gonda). 21 The Editor, "The Sunday Times" MADRAS (S. Bharat) The Rasashala Aushadhashcam GONDAL Dt. 7-10-50. Re:-Article on Dhatavad as appeared in the Soaday Times of 24-9-50 Dear brother, Ashirvadas: 1. I am very glad to receive from a friend of mine ac Madras a clipping of the Sunday Timer, dated 24-9-50. If persons like you evincing interest in our ancient lore come forward to en:odrage ai, we can be very helpfal to opr copptry by carrying on research in such secret sciences. But our present government is solely after Allopathy. It will be iarpır'd to support the research of secret miraculous things from our ancient Shastras, only when the God has to destined the welfare of our country. 2. This seience of Dhatuvad has not been lost in early times, io middle ages or even to-day. The fact is that the Brabrio Sadhas well-versed in it do not come forward in the poblic. Under the role of the British, they had thought that their mysterious lore will be utilised to benefit an alten coantry. to-day, even though they are a free nation, they see that the religion, places of Worship, learned Brahmins and cows are treated with dirdain. So if they give the benefit of their knowledge to the State, they think that the former odes will meet with greater haraısment. So high-souled perrons, possessing soch Siddhi of Dhatuvad, do not wish to give its benefit to the State. 3. The success of this Siddhi also depends opon religion and Mantra Shastras along with Prayogas. It has been Bo ordained by the Scriptores and the guiding preceptor that 2 person endowed with this Surarna Siddhi shoald act its wealth in the leait for himself or his family tremberg. [t has been prescribed to be ased for the protection and acarish. ment of Brahmios knowing Vedas, cows, religion, scriptores, religious places etc. Io time af grave emergency, it can also be utilised for the good of the country, 22 4. In Shree Bhavaneshwari Granth Bhandar of the Rass. ,- sbala Aushadhasbram, there. arc 17,000 muss. on 42 different subjects. Of these 509 manuscripts are on Ayarveda and about 75 on Dhatuvad. Of these, we have got poblished the two:- Raddhi Kband-Vadi Khand and Rasa Prakash Sudhakar. It is not true that Raba Ratnakar, Rasa Ratna Pradeep and Bhav Prakash are books on Dhatuvad-Rasa Vaad. Rasa Ratnakar's author is Shri Paravati Patra Nityanath. It is in five parts-Kbandas, three of which deal with the treatment of diseases and are printed in Bombay. Its fourth and the fifth parts-Mantra Khand and Ruddhi Khand bave both been pablished by os. Nagarjona's Rasa Ratnakar is yet anprinted. 5. We have got many books and mst. on Whatavad. The following are the chief among them. . 1. Rası Kachba Patam. 8. Savarna Tantra 2. Sapta Dhata Kalpa 9. Vaidya Bhaskaroday 10. Ratna Patal (Rodrayamal) 11. Dhata Kautok (Nityanand) 3. Parad Kalpa 12. Nagarjan's Rasa Ratnakar 4. Gandbak Kalpa 13. Parsharana Taotran. 5. Gorakshnathi Paddhati 14. Ragahridayam (Govind 6. Ramadan Swami Dhatavad Bbagatpad ) 7. Jain Gorji Dhatavad 15. Rasaratoakar Nityanath Siddba. Dhatuvad is also embodied in many m9s. of Tantra sach as Dattatraya Tantra, Uddish Tantra, Harmekhla Tantra etc. and those of Jainism. These 800 mss.. on Tantra and 1200 m9s, on Jainism are here with us. 6. On 27-5-1941, on Three Occasions in the month of Jyeshtha of Samvat 1998, my friend Shri Krishnapal Sha. stri bad converted mercary into gold in the Biria hodie, New Delhi in the presence of Shri Amritlal Thakkar Bapa of Harijan Sevak Sangb, Goswami Shri Ganesh Datta, Sitaramji Kbecka, Chief Engineer Wilson, Shri Birla Sheth, Viyogi Hari and others. Ten months after in the month of Chaitra, Samyat 1999, March 1942 he bad for a second time converted 38 lbs. of into gold at Rishikesh. Late Shri Mahadev Desai, Goswami Ganesh Datt, Shri Jogal Kishor Birla and others were present this time to witness it. The goldsmiths tested this gold 1 19 mercury 23 were with acids and other methods and it was found-qaite pare Aactioned on the spot, it fetched 75,000 Rs. The third time, in December 1942, when I was the President of the All lodia Ayarvedic Congress at Lahore, be bad converted 10 tolas of mercary into gold in my preseace, when 25 other Vaidyas were also with me. This gold was sold there and ther. MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE 7. It is a matter of deep regret that the State, Mahatma Gandhiji or Sheth Jogla Kishor Birla could not afford salety or protection to Pandit Krishnapal Shastri, thongb he had openly demonstrated his miraculous powers. I doubt whether Pandit Shree Krishnapal Sbastri and his brother might not have been kidnapped away by come anknown persons, for the European war was in progress they and there were romoors that the British behind the kidoapping as they were sorely in need of gold. Ooe British Engineer, Wilson bad seen that Prayoga with his own eyes and was heace convinced that ia time of distress, such men can be useful to bia country. Otherwige, how could both the brothers disappear at a time, while travelling from Benares to Delbi! Pandit Shree Krishnapal is said to bave been died, bat no one knows where bis dead body was borot. Until this be ascertained, the dabt expressed above standa. Really, doubt sarroande his death, much like that of Shree Sabbaab Chandra Bose. ANOTHER INSTANCE FROM MADRAS 8. Filteea years before, ope Saagasi from Shringeri Mata, named Amrotaband bad met me and told that one Brahmin from Madras or an adjoining place used to convert mercory into gold. Bat that Brahmin had ditappeared all of a sudden. Thereafter his wife and children used to get from some one in the Goveromeat boase Rs. 100)-every month, which were stopped after 10 years, Pandit Krishnapal too may have suffered the same fate.* 9. At Lahore, Pandit Kriebnapal had promised me." I am sure that the Gondal Ragalbala and Shri Bhuvaneshwari Pith. will accomplish the welfare and oplift of the country, religion, temples and scriptares. So I shall copfide this PRAYOGA to you.

24 I cannot atilise even a pie from this PRAYOGA for my personal use or for my family. I shall help the Rasashala with my koow. ledge and it cao maintain me and my femaily." I had agreed to all that Shri Krishnapalji had proposed, but six months, after, I heard of his disappearance. In 1936, Krishnapal Shaatri had come to Gondal and had copied out some of my m89, DHATUVAD, before he left, io 1940 when be had attained this Siddhi, he used to say that he had accomplished it with the help my mss. and the grace of a preceptor he bad met ia the Himalayas. 10. We have not yet established PRAYOGA SHALA for this PRAYOGA. We wish to do so in near future. In the begianiog, haodreds of PRAYOGAS to be performed will require a consider rable expense. To test and perform these one by one, various YANTRAS will have to be made on the basis of Shastras. A preliminary expense of about two lacs of Rg. will have to be made for this. Experienced scholars, well-versed in Rasayan Shastra, will have to be kept to belp me. For all this, a monthly expense of five to six thousand ropees will bave to be incarred. If the Government or wealthy persons andertake to provide for such expenre, we hope to accomplish tbat SIDDHI within two or three years. If this happens, mss. on DHATUVAD which we have collected at an expense of one lac of rapcer will bear fruit and many other experiments ast performed by Krlubnapal Shantry can also be gone through. PRECEIOUS STONES 11. Ratoa Shastra is oor unrivalled wonderfal scicoce. To give an instance: if 5 to 10 tolas of any of ibe pore diamonds, rabies, cmeralds, or pearls, takeo in a powdered form and readcred into Dravas arc beated by a special process, they will constitute one large unit of stoac of about egaal weight. After crystallinsing it, this single jewel will bring 5 to 10 lack of sopeer, whereas in a pordered for it would have fetched about 5 to 10 thoanand Rs. 12 Sach PRAYOGS are there in the mai. with us. We bare not yet cypericoced them. To do so, boobs on this science 25 will first be required and through stady will bave to be made to anderstand their meanings. YANTRAS' and 'apparatus for team will have to be made. Quitting aside all other works, one should then devote oneself wbole-heartedly day and night to sach PRAYOGAS. Then alone can encceis be obtained in dae 'time. We are in a position to do all this. 13. 1o Europe and America, scholars carrying on such reseaches are given all facilities by the State, which algo maintains their family. They pass their whole life in their rese. arch, with state help. They have not got books like our scriptures, They have to do every thing with their own imagination or intelligeace. Compared with them we are much better off as we bave 'got Shastras bequeathed to us by our ancestors. Bat oor ralers and leaders, who have imbibed western coltare, have so far showa no faith in them. 14 I had talked to my friend, His laté Highneis Maharaja Shri Sir Gangasiohji Bahadar of Bikaner about Pandit Krisboapal' Shastri'a PRAYOGA. He knew that Shastras pertaining to it were ia the Goodal Rara bala. So to establish a PRAYOGA SHALA for auch research he had promised to give me 50 lacs of rapece, vast site of land and use of mss. in his state. As such I had in my presidential address at Labore proclaimed my desire to. establish Gangasinh Dhanvantari Nagar. Its sketch map waa printed in thedrands of copies which were distributed there. With the Maharaja's death, the scheme however remained ablallfiled. *In memory of Gandhiji, Suggested plan; New scheme. , is. Since a year, I have entered into correspondence srith Baba Rajendrapragadji, President, the "Gandhi Memorial Faod » with a wish to establish Mahatma Gandhi Dhanvantari Nagar at Rajkot, wdere Gamithii dau gruwer op art' shirt tergantun an his pative place. If this Dhanvantari Nagar be established, work for PRAYOGAS on DHATUVAD can be carried os there along with other researches in Ayorveda. Ia Rajkot, the Rasasbala owns land with balldiag mencaring 40,000 sq. yde valoed at foar lács of rapees. I have thooght to give over this land to 26 1 1 the Sagrashtra Government or the Central Government, at a certain fixed price for the establishment of Mabatma Gandhi Dhanvantari Nagar. I bad a talk in this matter with the Primo Minister of Saurashtra Shri Dhebarbhai who had been on a visit to the Rabashala ori 30-9-50. 16 Even if the the PRAYOGA becomes baccesful, I do not with to have any pertonal gain from it. I maintain roguelf and my family from the Ratashala. I want to strive for this PRAYOGA only after I receive an assoradce that the PRAYOGA,1f succe cafal will be used for the good and uplift of the country, the religion, temples, Brahmins and cows. Such is the injonction to me from my preceptor of this Science. Bat for this, I do not wish. to devote my life, intellect and knowledge to this PRAYOGA, even though teo lacs of rupees be placed in my hands for it. I am confident that if I work after it for two or three years, Bhagavati Bhavanesbri will give me soccer in it. I do 'oot want to say at prerent whether this is destined or - 17. As you evince faith in our ancient Shastras, champion and encourage their cause, I have been actuated to addrese thio lengthy letter to you. Otherwise, I do not write about it to anyone. This work cannot be done with B&Ccess by University laboratories or bladegla getting scholanhips; for the basis of thin retearch is on mss. pertaining to it. It is doabtful whether at any other place has rach collection of mus. and books on thin objects at the Bhavaneibwari Grantha Bhandar of the Goodal Rasashála hai. If Mahatma Gandhi Dhanvantari Nagar be established, these books and more. will be taken op in ta there weder my supervision or I shall use them when a PRAYOGA SHALA will be established in the Rasashala al means and facilities will permit. Some of these mus. I had got from Swami Shri Achyntapaadji, in Samvat 1962, when I had utayed, with blm op moont Girnar for plee months. Withio the next forty five year, their stock bas greately increated. This is a tecret work to be done la secret. It can be successfally accomplished by him only who laboon firmly alone, in private, sided by God's . or not.

June 28th 1951: [5] Exhortation of the Vestem Scholars for Ayurveda FROM:- Col. Walter Seth Kippis, H, D., P.b. D.. Consnlate of the Dominican Republic, 300 Carteret Place, ORANGE, N, J., U. 8. A. To Rajyaidya Jivram Kalidas Shastri, GONDAL (Saurashtra, India ). My dear Rajyaidys, Close to a year and four months have passed since I attended the ALL INDIA AYURVEDIO CONGRESS sessions at Delhi. This atterdance was towards the end of my stay in India. At that time I received A most welcome invitation extended on your behalf to visit you at your location in Kathiwar. I considered the invitation eo honour and hoped to have the pleasure of meeting you personally knowing you to be one of the brightest lights in the world of AyurTeda end philosophy of the Rishis, I was also while at Kathio ar to visit the Maharaja of Nayanagar whose Maharanee has done much in support of Vedio coltare and whom my wife was anxious to meet and vleit with Dr. Mehta whom I met a number of times ond whose new translation of Charka intrested me yory much. All these plans were based on our inability to secure passage back to Enrope, as shipping was crowded and my wife dose not like to bly, roddenly, ont of the clear sky I received a wire from the Direotor of the Lloyd Triestino that a fine cabin was to be bad in a sbort time. All my previons plans were cancelled and I had to loave. I frankly felt that I migsed mack by not meeting you, knowing of your status in the world of learoing. The reason for my coming to Iodis this time as I have been thero before tras to complote the work which I started many years ago when I became insterested in Ayurveda. I had a long and extended correspondence with your successor as President of the All INDIA AYURVEDIO **CONGRESS Rajvaidy. Maniodra Kumar and was supposed to take linal teaminations et Hardwar for an Ayurvedic degree. It is true that I bayo agother degree bat I wanted . bigber one and worked hard to get it. Valortadately while I was on the way to lodia he passed away. I was & skock to me and I probably would bero turned back if it pero not for meeting my old friend Di. Lakshmipathi and then kaowing that Pandit Shira Sharma, Dr. Mehta, Dr. Sria yasa Marti and others whomI know, I decided to attend the Coogress. I bave done it pot liko en opleider attendiog every lectgro (hariog somno opo to translate for me) esting with to me and so on.

I keenly felt the absence of sooh lights of tho past as Pandit Malaviya, Mahamahopadhyaya Ganapath Sea and others whom I bare kaora la the past. Well, Panditji that is the story of Ayurveda aad to my failare to see yor. Now as to the way of this lefter. I am beginning to think of another trip, not in a week or a month bot within the foreseeable lature probably in 1951 and wish to get in touch with you so that you may extend the invitation to ylsit you. I am do trouble as I eat Indian food and wbile a Oolonel in the Army learned to sleep wberever there lo room. Thus Gondal which has 20 European Hotel will not be a deterent to my visit.. I noto with pleasure that you bave been honoured by a gamber of Western associations, which I am sure is well deserved. Even the most learned! man dose not fail to appreciate the appreciation of his talents. With my most respected good wishes for the continued good work which you are doing and for your personal welfare, I am. Yours sincerely, 82.)-Col. Walter Soth Kipois. } - Oar Reply ] Col. Walter Seth Kipoli, Ph.D., M.D., Ayarvedacharya, 300, Carteret Place, 29th August 1951 ORANGE, N. J., (U. S. A.) My dear learned friend, I acknowledge with deep thaoks your letter of 28-6-51 received by me on 2-7-51 is dae time. Immediately the copies of the same were dispatched to H. H. the Mabar ja Saheb, H. H. Mabaraoi Saheb and Dr. Mehta at Jamnagar, to that they may be familiar with the contents of your letter. Doriog the Delbl Session of the Ayarvedic Congress, on coming to know that you bad been there to participate, I had directed my son, with some literatore of my Institation, to javite you to visit my Institation at Goodal. It was a doty lacambeat apo me to invite and bonor you, a great scholar and admirer of Ayorveda. Bat according as stated in the letter, I learn that you had to bastea op for America and for could not acccde to my lovitation. It w21 Tery interesting to me 1 30 : to know aboat you through my, friend and the ex-President of Agarvedic Conference, Rajvaidya Manindrakumar Makerjee. His sad demise has inflicted a heavy loss opon Ayurveda and friends - Jike yoa. lo tbe Delhi Session amoogst the assemblage of the Vaidyas, and hogoared guests, yoors was a note-worthy attractioo. I feel bighly pleased to learn that you intend to visit India again in 1952, bat at the same time I have a doubt raised lo me, whether the recent gradual evolation of warlike atomspbére in India, Pakistan, Europe, America and Asia and its probable horrible ontborst during three years to come will make it possible for you to visit Iodia or not. Still however when you will viit Ragashala and Jamnagar in 1952. I shall be much pleased to welcome you. Here, I have the good luck to entertain as my guests many of my frieads from Earope and America. Similarly, I would consider it a matter of high regard and pride for myself, my Institution and the whole of Kathiawar, when a scholar, a great admirer of Ayurveda and an American gentleman like you will give us by your visit the good luck to honour and entertain yoo. You are right to soppose that there is no Earopean Hotel In Gondal. Be it or not, we have in oar Rasashala Aaghadha. I shram a well equipped Guest-house to receive all our foreiga, friends and well-wishers. Your company will give os more joy and comfort as you are a vegetarian and habitoated to accomodate yourself to all circumstances, la India 95 percent of the Brahmins and Vaishyas of Gojarat, Kathiawar, Maharashtra and Bombay Presidency, are vegetarlass. Similarly our family is strictly vegetarian Icom ancient times through heritage. We take milk, ghee, batter, and honey as animal food. Besides these, we are ordaloed by religion not to touch even any edible animal substance. Hence, we shall entertain you here with many varleties of vegetarien food, when you will be oar gaest. I invite yoor wife also to accompany you in the visit to our place. His Highness the Maharaja Saheb, Hai Higbacks the Mabarani Sabeb and Dr. Mehta will also be cbccifal by yoor vialt and you will be picard by our company, 81 I thank you for your high expressions of praise and ad. miration for me. I read in them nothing but the magoanimity of your heart. On account of the general attitude towards the West and its imitation, during the British rule in the past, and eminent congreas leaders in the present administration evincing the tame sort of attitade, we the researchers in the field of Ayurveda and other apcient Aryad scriptares have to face many obstacles through want of patronage and we progress very blowly in the works at band and those intended. Hepce, I do not believe I have been successful enough to reach the stage you have so kiodly expressed about me. Still however the good Wishes of brothers like you and transformation in the attitude of oor rolers in patronising the Argan scriptures will certainly make oor ways smooth in the service of the acriptores, Blenringa to you, your wife and all the members of the family: * तत्सत् ॥ Yogis sincerely, श्रीचरणतीर्थः॥ (SHRI CHARAN TIRTHA MAHARAJ) Consolate of the Dominican Repnblic, Orange State, Sabsequent Letter N. J., U. S. A, 14th Nov.1951 - Respected and honoured Rajavaidya Shastri: It was a great pleasare for me to receive your kind letter of August 29th. Almost immediately after that date, that is the date of receipt of your moit valued letter, my wife and I had to leave for Florida and Central America and bave retaracd bot a few days ago. Thas this is the first opportunity I had to reply to yoor letter and to tell you how mach pleasage I derived from it. X X x x X X X X His Highness the Maharaja Saheb, is one of the most loteresting med I had an opportunity to observe. There is a man who onderstands tbe old and the new, who knows the Vest 25 represented by both England and U.S. A., who aoder.

82 stands the U. S. A. and the strength and weakness of its atractarc. It would be stopid to believe that be does not understand bis Owo country and its iphercot weakness with introdaction of a, democracy for which it is as yet anprepared. There is a man who if he lives long enough will play an important and valaable part in the affaira of the world and fhose of India particularly, and I firmly believe to the benefit of both India, its people and the affairs of the world. There is but one criticism I wonia offer of the Maharaja' Saheb and that is I wish he would redace in weight which would give him so many more years of dieful life. Wble one can thus easily observe the Maharaja, Her Highnets the Mabaradee can only be appreciated by the kindoese of her deeds. If I am correct she is the spirit which is blowing new life into the apcieot learning and thor is not only · glorious oraament to the honoured house to which the belonge but a person sofficiently farsighted to think of the fotare and of the benelits which the great masses of people will derive førough Her farsighted support of ancient learning as applied to the modern needs. The loss of Rajvaidya Manindra Kamar Mokerjee is onc cannot replace. There is so much that we planned and hoped to do together, which DOW i opattainable. When I come to India I will be no problem to anyone. I' love Indian food, have no particolar love for meat, easily adopt myself to conditions. One can only ask that my hosts will get over their prejudices, against a Westerder, the distrant which I ab often fornd, of ones parposet, and look on one ar-a brother, a'fellow practitioner and just a human belog. I.bave reached an age when small annoyances are unfelt. When the thoughts behind the deed is often mach important than the deed. The wora brother is more valuable to me that the titles I. possess Oy the honours I received. I hope that India is fortunate enough to remain ont of the conflict which seems to be shaping up and then with a. learning and tolerance acquired through ages will lead the pitfall which I 1 remaios of what we now know as the Western civilization, along the path of sense and recovery. I say that, with foll realization of India's weakness. Nevertheless tbere is atill much more spirituality left there than elsewhere in the world. It is to be hoped that you will got object to my proposing your honoured name for a scholastic bonoar which I have in mind, With my most sincere wiehes to yoo. Frateranally yours, Sd.l-Comdr. As the resident of Nawadagar State and the loyal pobjcct I, with my descendants, eviace ligbest prido and regard for thiett Highnesses and remember with boroar and dignity as oor Babamaja and Noble Rolor. 6. With crores of people to side tae, 1 bare always based and cone tempted the prossiling political trends and short-sigbled polices to car country ebont removing the rolors *s mero passicsers to the present administration of the country. This sort of policy would never fit in the mentality of we lodians whose lives are fromalated in conformity with oft &ocient glorioas Aryan Caltare. Racs of Kshatriyas is the only commanity, having martial vigour, that can protect the people. Those Kshatriyas number about six crores in India at present. Ono croro Warriors can easily be had from them at any moment. It is disastroas for'and poter 'in the interest of India to reduce these brate warrious to more agricaltarists or businessmen. When India was governed by these Kshatriyas, the country weg elrong, prosperous and rich but as a result of the polioy of dissention propounded by the Britisbere, daring their domain of 200 years, certain ancient colture and traditions were destroyed; atill however tho race did flourish ander the safety and coverigaty granted by the Britishers to Nativo States and their rolers. Ancient India governed by the Kshatriya Ralers bad Dover experienced aparcby, widespread hangor, epidemios, Etalo of scarcity, fomide inspite of abundance of graíos apd sach other Godly and mid-mado calamities as are felt in these days. 7. The path on which the countries and nationa of the world aro tuanioos, as it wero, in theso day, is the path fall of accidents and annihilation. They experience it to be so in present times or will experienco la lature. We ardently desire that those ancient modes of adminislation by klogs and ralers should be re-established in lodia and the World, if happiness and prosperity aro needed. Glorious days of RAMAYANA and MAHABHARAT remind us of that golden bleseed period when rileru followed tbo principles of administration as set up by those holy scriptaros. We sincerely wish him again to be the virtual king of Nawanagar and the whole of Saurashtrs, which is 4 senge he is, at present, This is sure to in future. 10. Your homoar in criticising the bulky body of Maharaja Shree is really worthy of a close friend and well-isber. As a devotee of Ayurveda I would also like to request His Highness to be raindfal of the same. There are so many herbs that will do the work and will not diminish the strength and vitality of the body. 11. I am much pleased to read your delighting and aptly eologising sentiments about Her Highness the Maharani Saheb. Her Highnets strictly follows our noble traditions and moral Jaws of our ancient culture and stapacbly upholds the Aryan scriptures, Still, Her Highness is well aware of modern trends and thus combining the ancient and the modern elements like the holy confluence of the Ganga and the Yamada, Her Highness, with rare and anusual skill, impresses on the sabjecte, Ibe noble and cultural modes of life that would lead to welfare and general good. 12. Her Highness owns best merits, worthy of a brave Kshatriya woman. She occupies a considerably high statos in India, in fields political and practical. 40 lacs of people of Saurashtra respect her as an ideal woman of honour, well-verted in politica and look with an eye of devotion and feelings at her, the embodiment of their ideal. They earnestly desire that Her Higbpesi may again become their virtual Rajmata-Qaeen Mother which in a sepse she really is there days. I do not depict all these in formal eulogy of Their Highnesses, but I simply reflect tbe regards of the people and my sentiments arising from my close association and experience with them. May, Their Highpesies live long enough to share in the oplift and progress of India and achieve glory to the noble dgaarty they beloog.

36 13. Rajvaidya M. K. Mukerjee's loss' in the field of Ayurveda is too heavy to be borne and irreparable. We selected him as the President of the All India Ayarvedic Congress at Rajkot in 1943. Thorcafter he came on scene more conspicuously and served the cadee of Ayurveda with ardent zeal for six to seven ycars and alas, the bright star was extinguished in so tender an age! Who could have imagined this dismal fate in the farthest futare crep 1 While he was at Hardwar both of us had chal.ed aat a long plan for the progress and development of Sanskrit and Ayarveda. We had proposed to begin the work at my place-40 thousands yds. of land-at Rajkot. I had undertaken to collect an amount of 20 lacs of rapeer for the project. Bat, my friend, it was not destined and I lost a zealous young fricod in him. 14. I apprec'ate your feelings in oot being bardeosome to friends, but India is a copotry that evinces godly and divine love towards guests. "starugat #ai" Consider your gaest to be your God is oar aacred aphorism. It is interwoven in the homely Jives and duties of Indians. Only the people ander the impression of Esglish caltare and so-called forward persons imitating the west, kcec the business view point in forefront, in treating their guests. But only ten percent of Indians come into this fold, while the rest of people still follow the ancient coltare and traditiona and never manifcst a little bit of self-interest or apathy in treating the honoured and respected guests. It is trpe that they would reccive them to the best of their means and manners. It is never in the natarc or good coodact of we, Indians, to look with disgust at oor gacets, bo he our relative, friend, Indian, Eurcpean, Maslin, Christian, gay, even an oatcast. On the contrary to consider it to be a sin to bave soch ſcalings. We also thas receive and welcome all car guests most cordially and manifest oor feelings of love and sincerely to the bait of our ability and thos win their hearts Recently I had the honour to welcome my 'friend Reverend father Santa Pao of St. Xavier's College, Bombay. He took delight in oor homely Indian dishes and inspite of sitting arrangement for dining at the tatie, specially made for him, be squatted down with as on yccden Ecats on floor. WVc have got a stylish guest-house here, spitable to our European and all other friends. 15. Titles, honour, degrees, polper, position, statas etc. are all irr:portant for practical parposes in wordly affairs only. They are all secocdary in view of close friendship. We most respect, regard and fonoar western scholars like you establishiog and adding to the glory of Ayurveda in your countries, la this sease you all are no less than our brothers, nay, members of the family. 16. Troe, that India ia fortapate enough to remain out of the conflict that seems to be shaping op the world of to-day. Bat when the world will be divided into two tater-tigat comp3. rtments to carry opt the conflict, it would be impossible for India to be unaffected, because the Britishers bave left tho cauatry ia sacá a merciless condition and so precarious a predicament bas been created by them, that willingly or not, thos having reins of administration of the cogntry in their hands will have to be driven into the depth of the dismal conflict. Parlition of India is a terror-strickco and disastrous cveat is the life of India. It brooght out with its birth antold calamitler on crores of persons and their properties worth bandreds of crorcs, India had to manage, with tears in eges, for one crore of Hindos to re-habilitate. There helpless relogees bad been forced with aching hearts and soariog eyes to leave their dear, cstablibed birth places of long residence, with properties of thopsands of rupees and scre redaced to penary, pauperirm or poverty. Two cores of people get in Pakistan are lcadiog a llic of misery and slavery, whereas, 4 crores of Maslics are completely safe and happy in India. They are as free and #cars as the Hiodos here and cnjoy copal sights and priveleges. Not only that bat they hold high ranks in the administration of the copatry. For instance, out of eight ministers at the centre there are two Mieslims. Many other occupy the high posts of Governon in the provinces. These Ministers are bandling important port folios like tborc of Edacation, R311x3y, Trade, Transport, Telegraph, Broadcarting etc.. On the coattory there is cot a single Hindo la Pakistan, holding toch a bigh post.

38 17. Supposing the war becomes a possibility in near ſatare it would result from the destractive British-sponsored policy of Paklatan, and problem of Kashmir, so igoominiously created by them. The policy of Anglo-American block is to allow Pakistan half the portion of Kashmir, to establish their military bates, to erect aerodromes and to obatract the Russian path of co.ning over to Asia. On the boundary of Kashmir there are the China, Iibct and Rossla. They will also in return make reactionary preparations in those countries on the opposite side. Thas flame of fire will burst out from these circumstances, sooner or later. For the epscing five years the world will be ensnared in a big turmoil. And thereafter, I foresee, that the world will see the days of peace and prosperity. 18. Thank yco, for the kindgers of proposing a scholastic honour for me. I have received to many honours from Europe and America, co far. Onc sent, so kindly by you shall be received with thanks. 19. X x 20. Excuse me, the letter has been elongated bat datoralig coough to cover the answer to all the points in your letter. 21. I convey blessings of Divine Mother Shri Bhavaneshwari to you, you: Dbarmapatoi and cbildren that may you live love, be bappy and prosperous. (SWITZERLAND) My dear, Brother, I am in receipt of your letter dated 29-9-51, I am glad to read therein that you got my address from my pupil Dr. Lloyd of Ceylon. I have also noted with pleagare poar strong propensily for the knowledge of Ayurveda. It gives me great delight to know that you are an expert in patoral medicine, you treat patients on that line and you evince an interest in and stady of the problems of oriental medicine, "It is known to mo that in Europe there is a growing sveision against European medicines, since last many years; not only that, but by my experience of 45 seara in the field of Ayurveda and consequently treating lacs of patients from many countries of Africa, Asia, America and priocipally of Indis, I have come to form an idea that despite their att- Tactive, charming and decorative packing, people of the whole world gradually doveloping disdain towards European Medicines. The reason for this is the immaturity of the Allopathic system of medicines, instability and proneness to change in the facts and traths and the general popular belief that they are merely is the stage of experimentation di laman lifo. As is admitted by pre-eminent research workers, of Europs and America, in the field of Ayurveda, the antiquity of Ayarvede dates back with and stands parallel to the period of the fone Vedas-the Rig, Yajar, Savan and Atharvan. According to the principles based on oor ancient Jyotisha Shastra (Astrology) we believe the Vedeo to be existing more than one Lao of years back. Even the European soholats admit their oxistence as far back as 20,000 years ago. Sioce last fifty years Western scholars have been increasingly attracted towards this great Science of Ayurveda, the principles of which bota been decided and translated into action since times immemorial, the expiry of a period of thousands of years have not in the least affected and changed whose basic principles and the merits of medicines as delineated in that science are experienced as advantage ons as before to the people of the whole of the world. Haodreds of those scholars to-day aro sladying Ayurvoda intensively with laterest and speak for this Shastra in high luadable expressions. For some instances, in the matter, you may please refor to and read in my Presidental address of the Olst All Indis Ayurvedic Congress at Lahore, a book-let dispatched e to you to day, with the literstars of my institution, lor your perusal, + On knowing your eagerness for the study of Ayoreda, I am very much pleased to have one more friend. added to my European circle of lovers of Ayarveda. I suppose, you might not have studied Sanskrit. You must be knowing that sll the criginal texts on Ayarpeds are written in Sanskrit. They number about 700 and out of them I possess 300 mas, among the 17,000 mss., I have in my Bbayapesbyari Grantha Bhandar. 200 great and small works on Ayurveda are lotad printed and published so far. Books for study amongst them aro Charak, Sushrat, Vagbbatts, Bhay. *prakushe, Sharangadbar, Rasaraton-Samucobaya, Rasaprakash Sadhakar, Bhaishajyaratali, Ayurveda Prakash, Rasoddbar Tantra eto.. Several of them bave been traoslated into English, Eastern scholars have been sladylog Ayurveda, having mostly relied on these texts. I bave got several fach editions with English translation in my library, but there is only a single office copy of each. Hence, I will inquire about those books and the places from which they can be obtained and then I will inform you about tbat later on. Th: Sashrat amongst those books is a work on Surgery. It is printed in three Yolumes with English translation. Charak, Bashrut and Vagbhatta are the three Sombita works of grost importance in Ayurveda. The editions with English translation of them are mostly unobtainable to-day. Charak Samhita is - great work and reputed western scholars bave ovinced each deep faith in the work that it is believed that if patients are treated according to the systems advocated in the Charak Samhita, best results would be acbioved and no other exact, hormless, life saving and woique method, standing in its comparison, would be required pay, would not be found existing. A scholar and vaidya of Calcatta bad, 35 years ago, translated the Charak Samhita in English, but that is not available these days. Thinking it to be so, the Rajpramukh of Sadrashtra, the member of the Indian delegation to U.N.O. and the Mebaraja of Nayanagar Jam Saheb His Highness Shri Sir Digvijayeinbji Sakeb end Her Highness Mabarani Shri Qalab Kanvarba Saheb, ao whose loyal subjects we always take prido, in order to encourage the propagation of the multifarious adpantageous of Charık Sambita in India and all parts of the world and to enable the people of the world to be the most profited by it, their Higbeesees facilitated spd patronaged the research work of the Oparak Sambita before 10 years, This work has been completed since three months. It was lirst presented to oar President Dr. Baba Shri Rajendra Pragadj. Sıx lovely Tolomey have been prepared and they cover 5000 pages. It is valued at Rs. 125 or 27 to 30 American Dollare. D.M.En cic, Switzerland GONDAL.( Kathimar) 2012 November, 1951, My dear Brotberg It is with great thankfulness that I bave received your letter of Octobc: 1Gib, 1951. Your valuable information have foond my vivid intcrent I was copccialiy happy to ficd to many proves of mataal onderstanding. The allert of the Europcar medical science is rat'an Isolated apparition, but jant one of the many symptoms of the abrolcte failer of the Ecropcan spirit, or tpiritoallım. Ibu 43 entire spiritoal development in Europe has gone wrong ways for bandreds of years, causing a terrifying externalisation of every object, as well as to an exaggerated materialism, going to extremes. The consideratica of the internal forces of map bag been neglected entirely. What Europe Deeds most and alone can eave this continent is the return to the valuable sources of the Asiatic spiritaalism. For many years I have been fighting for this idea; also by means of articles in periodicals ("Oar Earopean Mission"), which have also appeared in Asiatic and American newspapers. This basic mental attitrde has brought me in sharp opposition to the still ruling powers in Europe, thus my idealogical crasade is a steady battle. It is essential that pablic groups in Europe be absolutely ready to comprehend the mistakes of the European spiritoalism and to wish a basic change in this regard. If those powers are not very much visible as yet, they are sonetheless latently present and at the given moment they will no doubt take on successfully. The International Circle of Coltare (ICC), presided by the undersigned for a long time has been propagating the return to the spiritual powers of Asia. Very important is the accentuation of true ethics, which alone mast and can be the basis of all our activitier; this refers to the individaal as well as to the whole. This point of view is one of the main factors that Epropean medical science cannot be tolerated anymore in its present atatos, as it is one of ber most propagated believes to attain her remedies by torturing inoomerable thousands of animals. To attain a profit by caosing others to suffer is aiways an act which from the ethical point of view must be rejected. There is not a single philosophical sophistry that could justify bad meaos to attain a "good" end. Ac act, ethically wors, is however, in any care cordemned from the beginning and will end in a failore. This is probably the main reason for the fail. are of the European medical science and Ayurveda is basically an ethical one, we believe it to be of great importance for Earopean man to get acquainted with Ayurveda and thus to corquer Epropean medical sciecce.

There is no doubt that heavy battling will start at the moment principles and possibilitics of Asarveda begin to take foot in Eorope. This conflict woold however, not merely be a " dircassion on parels scientifical terms-which would be highly welcome bat the European medical scicoce will no doubt take advantage of all the churcbly and public (state) powers for 2 backing-ap to oppress the truth. The reprezentatives of the Evropcao medicine are to be fonnd not only among physicians, university professore, a. 9. o, bat and mostly in the chemicalpharmaceutical trasts with their monster stocks, with their immedie inflaence on the Earopean prets and their widespread connections with political powers and their leaders. Accordiog to experience all means will appear to be right and will serve thesc powers to grant the contingency of their fundamental issues and believes, I am, however, confidently looking forward to this battle, as I kaow that it is inevitable if Earope wishes to find her way oat of disaster and becaute I am set to fight chivalrously and with the weapons of tratb. Forther, as I am convinced that ethics will win in the long ron, I feel sore tbat victory will be oars. Tbis abows you and your friends, at least partly, the difficalties we face in Europe. To have the European people getting closer to Ayarveda the following programme is being deemed essential : 1. Foundation of the EUROPEAN AYURVEDA INSTI- TUTE (head quarters), working io close co-operation with you and your friends. This institate could be attached to the I. C.C., thas securing the advantage of haviog quite a group of intellect. pals who are already interested in Ayarveda. 2. It is essential that the respective Asiatic Personalities stand behind this institute, persons whose names bear international importance, for the European public to see that this project is being backed-ap by valuable Asiatic Personalities and Scientists. Before everything else these would have to give fall spiritual support to this enterprise. This will be more important than 45 are financial assistance. Of course, there will be a necessity to draw fande, bot they will not be considered as to be of first importance, as in this regard we sore to find ample material assistance here in Earope. It would be of very great importance and highly appreciated if the Mabaraja of Navanagar or another high ranking personality whom you may consider fit for this position would take over the Protectionthip of Earopean Ayurveda Institute. 3. To get European man acquainted with Ayorveda it will be Decessary that the Institate issues a periodical. This too, copld be combiped with oar ). C. C. magazioe (monthly), wbich will appear shortly. The necessary space could be reserved exclusively for article on Ayozveda. 4. Farther a book will have to be published by the E. A..., but the same ahould not be too volamiaong. Its aim would be to show the Europeaag what Ayarveda basically is at all, on what principles it has been built op, what the succes& is up to now, etc. It should be a pablication for lagmeo. in order to enlighten the broad pablic on the matter. 5. It has to be arranged that able Earopeang take op studies on Ayarveda through the Institation. As soon as a first group of European students for Ayaiveda is ready one or two Asiatic Scholars would have to come to Europe, to condact institution. The education must be an near thoroughness as possible and fully scientific. A cientific dissertation, like in other branches of uqiversity studies, will have to be taken into consideration and the same mast be submitted to an Ariatic University Board or a similar institute for verification. Has the respective stadent completed bis studies efficiently and surrendered an adequate distertation on Ayarveda, a corresponding diploma would be handed over to him legitimatiog him also in Europe. 6. It mast be understood that this can be folfilled and grow gracioally coly. It is oor doty to plant the feedling now, and to sen to it that its growth is bein: promoted ontil we have a strong tree. Later-on also the bigger pablications on Aj drveda will have to be translated into European language.

I should be pleased to learn your opinion and to obtain , your corpsel on the fondation of the Earopean Ayurveda Institate, and it would certainly be highly appreciated if this Iostitation soald work in close co-operation with yours. I am especially grateful for your very io teresting comments on Ayarveda and the respective literature. By the same mail I bave written to Dr. P. M. Mehta, MD, etc. with reference to you asking this gentleman to scad me the mentioned pablication, I sball be greatly honoured to hear from you agaio in the very near fatare, and I should consider my clf very lacky if we coild arrange together that Ayurveda gets its proper place in Europe. With all my best compliments for you and your activities and with the wish that ALL BEINGS MAY BE HAPPY. YOURS IN THE DHAMMA, Sd./-Dr, K. H. President NEB A., Ellenadweg 19 BERN, Switzerland My dear learned Brother, It gave me great delight to receive your air-letter of 20th Nov., 1951, which arrived bere do late a: on 14th Dec., 1951. Usually we receive soch air letters within a week from any part of the world. I thank you very much for your precious words. I ophold with all appreciation your sentiments aboat the entire spiritual degeneration growiog repidly in Europe and these words of yours are indeed valeable and thought-provoking. It is correct to say that growth of Spiritualism in Earope has taken a wrong turn for bondreds of years. You mast be fami. liar, perhaps, with the fact that India of 2500 years ago and of the days of Emperors like Athoka, Chandragupta Maurya and other benign 'ralers reigned sapreme in the fields of Philosophy, Astrology, Ayarveda, Geography, Astronomy, Architecture, Masic and many other sciences and was the Virtual Leader of the whole world. To speak of contemporary people, of the rest of the world, the ancestors of pretent generations in Europe, America and other countries, were groping in dark, moitly in primordial position and roamiog here and there. Gradually progressing in that position the Europeans have rcached the present stage. Hence-after they will acquire an opportunity of developing spiritaaliem. It is the general order in the Nature that races first attain the fastest prozress in raok materialism and after having been fed ap with that they are inclined to spiritualism. Indians also were once in the same position. Laca of years ago a majority of them were folly engrossed in materialism. This can be koowo from the works of the researchers like Ravana and others and from historical treatises like Ramayana, Mahabharata, Paranas etc. At that joncture, even then there was a class in India that flashed over the globe serene rays of knowledge in those days and even thereafter for ROmany centaries to come. This magnificent prowess of those ancient seers are even today visualised io ancient sacred remgants of that golden civilization in temples of yore, in copper-plateg and stone ioscription and verily, in the store-honse of knop. ledge left by them. The glorioas tradition of thousands of years bespeaks that India is destined by Almighty to be placed at the helm of the world, nay, the crest-jewell of the Universe. India only will be the saviour of the west and other countries from the clatches of materialiam. Usually, it is in the general temperament of-people that they are attracted towards certain elements and are only disgusted with them after they are fally fed op. Thus, people of Earope will in no time begin to show their disdain towarde their fadı.

18 I am greatly satisfied to learn that you and your Mission, singly as well as with the belp of journalı work for many years in the direction of Itading the people of the west towards retaro to Spiritaalitm of Aria, I appreciate all there activities of Fours. I have not been able to grasp what apiritual and acientific means you own in attaining access in your intended aims and objectives. I believe, your people would first be required , to have a thorougb contact with and deep study of the Aryan scriptores aach as Upanishads, Mahabharat, Valmiki Ramayan, Bbagvadgita and many others nourishing the spiritualism and leading the world aright. Essential elements of all these may have to be placed before the world to awaken the latent tend. encies of inclioation towards spiritaalism in the people of the west and make them fully and clearly aware of their mistaker. The subtle latent elemental sprouts in human hearts having been thus nourished will grow ap into rich fruit-bearing tree, and spread the numerous branches of benevolence and welfare of mankind. ::. Efforts of your institution at propagatiog the priaciples of ethics in all human activities in the achievement of the deaired goal, are indeed laudable; bat I doubt we shall not be able to acqaire the beat of the result in the field to long as Europe is not made to realise the principles, propounded withoat any sense of selfishness but solely for the welfare of maokind, by ancient Aryan seers, in their works written thousands of years ago. European medical science will be able to seek roluce altimately, only in Ayurveda. The dignity and the superiority of this amazing science are described by me in my laat letter of 16-10-51 and at still a greater length in my Presidential Address at All India Ayarvedic Conference at Lahore, in 1912, a booklet of which is sent to you as per book-post, some time back. You will fiod interest in them, Medical science of Europe is to mach expeosive, pompons and showy that it is not within the reach ol laymen. Despite the British domaia, extending over 200 years, in ladia hardly 4 crores of her people, out of 40 Crores, might have been takiog advantage of Edropean medical 49 science. Only the people residing in cities are partly attracted towards it whereas the large teeming millions of villagers solely rely on Ayorveda and nothing else, to maintain their lives. There are a pamber of men in India, even to-day, who have not even toached Allopathic drags. A copy of my letter addressed to our Hon. Health Minister at the Centre, Rajkumari Amrit Kami Bahen and discussing the above-mentioned topic is enclosed herewith for your perasal. You will find mach interest in it. Well, in auch sort of circumstances, if our Government, the Administrator wbereof are to the most extent stamped with the so-called Wetera Caltare shoulder the responsibility of renascitatiog Ayorveda and acquire for it the lovely homely place of yore, again in the whole world, I believe, within no time Ayurveda will be proved to be the only beoeficial science to mankind. It is quite correct to believe that present European administrators having verted interests in European medical cience, thore trastees of chemical-pbaramaceutical works and all the Bapportent and apbolders of it will certainly raise the hue and cry and leave no stone anturned to baffle all the attempts at introducing Ayarveda in ite stead. Bat Ayurveda is destined to be the Saperior Science of the world by Almighty and it is He who hat made it a part and parcel of the Sacred Vedas. Hence, the world will have to give it ite dae place at the greatest beneficial science, in due courte and all ite antagonists will have to secure safety in it by coming to its inspiring she ter. The conflict of the Western Materialiım as against the Eastera Spiriticalism is inevitable. Nothing materialises well without conflict, such a conflict is forthcoming to place Ayorveda, ultimately on the pedestal of its pristiae glory. We are going to live to see it falfüled within opt own life time. I can exactly undentand, the difficulties, you and your frieods face, in working in this fleld, bat no sooner you will be prepared' to fight oat the battle than difficulties will be multiplied. Stul, I am confi. dent, the lavincible weapon of Ayarveda will help you in overcoming them all and achieving final victory for you.

50 we are I pay iyon my best complimente for the plan you have drawn oat lo propagate Ayurveda in the West. Your scheme of establishiog E. A. I. and to attach it, for the present, to your renowned ICC, is worth considering. At the outset, I bope, we should tbink out a workable plan for the start and regular working of our intended institution, its aims and objectives, its reqairements in attainiog success for it and all these and then, I think, the institution is born. Theo will follow, your mention of spiritual aid and assistance from high rank personalities of Asia. Before receiving that, mach remains to be done. We should prepare a fine prospectos for it, outlining in details all our fatare activities in the field. Mention should also be made therein about our aim of recaring for the world the spiritual aplift through Aryan Sbastras such as those of Ayurveda, philosopby, Upanisbads etc. We shall also have to estimate oor expenses in the project. Then we should show how going to utilise the fonds collected. Tbas creating a grous form cf our Institution and deciding a certain amount of fees for the members of various catagories, we should be active to enroll lacs of members in it. Having accomplished this much and the intitation having been come ioto existence and financially well established, the programme ir:ay be carried on further. From the finance, thos nicely at hand, it should be to arranged that a certain amount of it may be sent to its Centre in India so that according to the copogel from here, the Centre over there may carry out the task for the whole of Eorope, while thie Centre may mapage for the whole of Asia. A glimpse of my scheme for propagating Ayurveda and other lores, will be-kaowa to you on perasal of my booklet "Oatline-sketch of Somnath Sanskrit Vishwa Parishad', my correspondence with our Hon, Food Minister at the Centre, Dr. K. M. Monsbiji. The same is gent to you to-day onder a separate book-post. Foradation of the fogtitation and collection of necessary faadt at the outeet having been done, the programme that will be carried on for the institution will be such that it would automatically attract the attention of promiacat international 51 273 personalities towards it and coming into its contact, they would aid and assist the same. Unless and antil our strong and solid institation comes into existence it would not be worthwhile to expect great personalities and scientists to come to our assistance. Prominent Indian personalities such as our leading Administrators like Hon. President Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Pandit Nehra, Rajkumari Amrit Kapr Baben; C. Rajgopalchariar, Dr. K. M. Montbi, Sbri Nandaji, Dr. Kailaenath Katja, Mabarebi Tandon. Shri Dayaabapkarbbal Dave, Scientists like Sir C. V. Raman; Rajas and Maharajas like H, H. the Maharaja Jam Sabeb of Nawanagar, H. H. the Mabarani Saheb of Nawanagar, H. H. the Maharajas of Jodhpur, Jaipar, Patiala, Travancore, H. H, the Maharaja Shri Krisbaakamarsinhji. the Governor of Madras, H. H. the Maharaja Shri Bhojrajji of Gondal; Leading Vaidyas and high rank persons like Vaidya Ratna Pandit Sbiva Sharma, Agarveda Marcand Shri Yadavji Trikamji Achatyai Vaidyaratna K. Pratapsinhji, Vaidyashastri Paodit Ram. narayan Sharma, M, M. Pandit Bhagirath Swami Rasayanacharya, Ayatveda Shastri Vaidya Sabbakant Zhu, Vaidya Shri Prataprai Prabharam, Vaidya Ratna Shri Vasa levbhai Dwivedi, Dr. P. M. Maheta, Dr. Gailder, Rajavaidya Balvant Sharma, Shri Balkrishnabhai Vaidya and all these will como out to helpoar institution. Similarly services of European and American statesmen, schoları, scientists and the like will be solicit. d. Gradually, the institution will be raised thus to such a state that a great circle of those interested in Argan scriptures and spiritoalism will be created and the principle aim of this institution viz a cqaring the prominent place for Ayarveda in the entire world will be fully materialised. According as you have mentioned we shall prepare for the intitate soch best pablications for even laymea that you will be able to place it before the public there, after modifying them according to your viewpoints and the secure a big circle of crorea of readers of Ayurveda and Argan scriptures for our Centre. This literatare will also lerve the porpose of attaining real peace, happiness and prosperity in the world and the whole wo·ld will be tied by the bond of Fraternity and Love.

To Yours sincerely, Tbo Manngor, Sd/-D, A. Kalkıral. Gondal Russtals 34 . 2 Feo:- Ragash le Anghadhashram Onr Reply] GONDAL, DI. 21 Feb. 1952 To:- Shriman D. A. Kulkarni, Saheb Depaty Director of Medical and Health Service (Ayurveda) LUCKNOW (U. P.) Dear Sir, Thanks for your letter of 2-2-1952 wbich reached bero' on 14-252. 1. I am delighted to learn that Government of Uttar Pradesh bayo appointed a Committee of Experts for the preparation of & Pharmacopoeia of Ayurvedic and Upadi Medicines. . It gives me pleaspre to not that this committee aims at preparing • Pbasclosporin for both the systems of medicine vis, Ayurveda and Unadi; bal I canot follow how this is feasible, as there is a past differonce in the games, methods of preparation, deos and properties of the drogs in both the Systems. By making & copfasion in the admixture of the two tho Government will bave to incur dogeceseary great expenses and the result will bot be estisfactory. Hence, it is my bamble opinion that this committee of U. P. Gort, should prepare two separato treatises: L'Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia, and 2. Vaani Pharmacopoeia. This would alao facilitate the work of Vaidyas Practitioners and Hakims, the expected abers of the same. 3. Berebelow, I mention somo salient festares of the proposed Ayarvedic pharmacopoeia: 4. I think, if the Eoglish method of preparing the Pharmacopoela is followed for our task, it would not be witable, facilitating and fa fitness of things for our Agarvedio Method. The use of thousands of medicines such as Bhaeras, Kupi Pakva Roca Rauayanes, Parpaties, Pille, Goggals, Tallas, Obritag, Choornas, Kwatba, Ayrlebas, Abavas and many others, mentioned in various Sembitas and other Rasayan Granthas of Ayarsedar mould be an impossibility. So this Ayurvedio Pbarmadoposia Bhould be divided into two sections. (1) Dratya-Gads-Darsbek Pharmacopoeia, (2) Biddbs-Ausbadhs-Geox-Darshak Pharmacopoeia. 3. Allopathic Pharmacopoeia generally describes ingredients, tiactures, powders, salts and other preparations made ont of them, their melbods of preparation, propertios efo. Then the Doctors and practitioners reler to them for prercriptions for various patlents considoring the natere of tha ailment, and then proscribe misture from them.scoording to thoir osperience and elficacy of drogs formerly tried on other patients. .

35 6. Method of Ayarreda entirely differs in this respect. 7. Ayurveds prescribes for varions discases certain Siddba Aushadbas i. o. medicines prepared from the yoga of certain tegitable, mineral and animal prodacts. Cboorpas, Rasas, Rassyspas, Pills, and other preparations used on almost all diseases contain 10, 20, 25 or more ingredients. The Siddha Aushadha thas prepared is primarily meant for a certain specific disease, bat considering the properties of the ingredients and the yoga of all of them tbe same drug can be nised with effiosoy on several other diseases also. Thus the Vaidyas have to utiliso ready made prescriptions tried and experienced by Master Vaidyas through ages and inheritence whereas the Doctors have to prepare their owo prescriptions, at their own sweet will. Tbus in allopathy there are as many prescriptions 'as there are doctors, 8. In the Pharmacopoeia of Allopatby they describe the properties of every prodact or the preparation made from them. Thas Ayurveda also desoribes the properties of the three sorts of medical droge, Bat their use is generally made by yoga of them, that means, several sach drags are mized in small or big quantities and tbe new preperation is utilised 21 the medicine for specific diseases Certain Bhaaras are prepared with tho help of certain herbs whereas certain others are given BEAVANAS of some specified plants and herbs Boveral other Bhasmas require the Yoga of three sorts of prodacts. This being the position one siddha Aushadha besides caring a certain disease, is also bolpful in healing other discases, This task is fulfilled by varions herbs. of various properties, mixed in the drog. To tell in short, Siddha Aashadbas of Ayurveda are the tried and experierced prescriptions of ancient Aryan Rishis and blonls, at the end of their toil of bundreds of years. 9. Let us take Suvarna Mallai Vasant as an instance bero. The ingredients in this drag are Swarna Bbasma 1, Moti(Pearl) Bbatma 2, Ras Sindoor (Red-Bharma of meretry prepared from mercary and soldbur), 3, Popper 4, Yashad Bhasta or Kbarpar 8. These things are to be mixed in batter and to be lotigated for 21 days in the jolco of lemons. The proportion of butter gradaalls decreases and altimately vanisbes. Levigas tion in then stopped. Now various articles in this bare various eflocta For iastacoe, Gold destroys the jerms of T. B. and vitalises the system, Pearls are talgagboa sad Pittorboashamat, Ras-Siodar strengthens tbo lang), Pepper aids the digestive power and removes pblegm, Yenlad Bhumma remotes the chronis-lovor, elements of batter and lemon help sed. facilitate the test of all the above elemsats iad sorts to minimize the acuteans of oibos symptons of tbo psicat of I, B. Thas the mediciae 56 besides giving the adventage of individus properties of Gold, pearls, Bass-Sindoor etc. becomes more efficacious when all those substances BIO thus combined into one and becoms & pinsdea for T. B. and mang their diseases. It also serves 88 a nica tonic for brain heart, Idogs cte. 10. Lieta take another iostance: Arogravardhani Pilis: Lagredients in this drag ate Mercary 1, Salpbar 1, Loh 1, Abhrak 1 Tema 1, Triſala 10, Shilajit 15, Gaggol 20, Chitrak 20, Kada 70. Bharos of tho jnice of the leaves of Neem tres are given for two days and, thou tba pills are prepared. This is a specilio medicino for blood-impurity. Bull it porko wooders op obasily, hydrocele, liver and spleen troables, indigestion, constipation, zlow favor, dineases of intestinos etc. due to the yoga of those parious berbs and substancos baring different properties. 11. Those Siddba Aushadbas in Ayurveda are themselves the best, tried and experienced prescriptions. They come under the class of Rain, Rassyan, Gatika, Gaggal etc. Their pomber is very large but still about 3000 of them aro of daily ase to Vaidyas and their knowledge is acquired by them through inheritance. Those siddba Aushadbas form the basis of Ayortada and AyorTodis Rasayan Shastras, 12. Io Ayurveda UPHACRAR SHASTRA ( System of Treatment) there is saob a prevalent universal procedure that after the diagaosis of oortain malo djoesso the medioides prescribed for that should also contalo subsidiary drags in its yoga for all otbor symptoms of supplementary milments, the patient manifests. The prescription instils into the body of the patieat about 50 to 100 elements and the result comes to be tbe bost. 13. Ia oar pbormacy thoussads of local and ontaldo patients como lor treatment. Yours sincerely, 11 ta curatata # (Rasesbacharya ShriCbarantirtba Mabaraj) 60 - [8] An Appeal to Rashtrapatiji for nòminating a Vaidya in the Parliament Mapaoiga Dr. Shri Rajendraprasadji From: Rasasbala-. ** Rashtrapatiji, 'Gondal : Dated 11-4-5% NEW DELHI. Maoaniya Mabodaya, Arbirwardas. On the 'auspicious occasion of congress.coming into power - for another five years. I take an opportabity to bless and congatulate the Congress, its prominent leaders and your honour occuping high status and honoar in the Congrest and country both. Under your honori's benign Presidentship, Dr. Radhakrisbnan's Vice-Presidentship and the administration of , the learned members of the Parliament, may India be prosperous, relieved of three sorts of troubles: Adhi, Vyadbi and Upadhi; may the dear Motherland be a strong Rashtra worthy of its name and show the world a' oniqae, and exemplary mode of 'democratic administrat on based on our ancient tradition, coltare and heritage and thus become a model for the world; may it again attain the digoified high status in the wholeworld as it once occupied in being supreme and sovereigo in spherea religious, social, historical, political and linguistic. 2. To achieve unique success in the task of admipistration worthy representation in the legislatores should also be given by the majority congress party fo experts, proficient in various scriptures and lores. According to our constitution your honour are entitled to nominate in the Parliament 12 members. Oat of them your honoar have nomipated certain magicians and experts in dramatic and other arte. But as a great scriptore liko Ayurveda has found no representation in it, I hereby beg to soggest your honour to give Ayorveda its dae and dignifled place in the nomination. 3. Out of 36 crores of the Jadian population 90 procent of the people, who chiefly dwell in roral areas and have never come into contact with Allopathy, solely rely on Ayurveda and keep themselver free from diseases. Vaidyar and Hašimo gerving this noble - scriptare pomber abont 2 lacs io lodia. They are Apread over big and small villager and cities of ladia. They texve the pation to the best of their knowledge and ability. Handrede of Vaidyar amongst them are great experts. There experts pousers the rare ability of caring the nasty and locarable dite. ates that can never be cared by any syitem of the world ,01 can be cared through operation only. They occupy high atatas in the nation. In every provioce there are such expert Vaidyai. They can be useful in giving guidance and advice to provincial governments in matters regarding Ayarveda. Thus the copatrý may be relieved of a large borden of crores of rapeet belng spent after foreigo drogs and dependence on foreign countries for medical aid and parapharnelia. 4. Hence, it wonld be seen that a dae place in the central as well as proviocial goveramenta each for one expert. Vaidya would be an absolute necessity in the administration of the country. Rastrapatiji and Governors of Provinces have according to the constitation, righra to nominate some members, in the legitlatore, considering their proficiency in various scriptares or arts. It is here that I would like to suggest yoor honoor to 'nominate one expert Vaidya at the centre in the scheme and "the provinces should be advised to follow tait. 5. In yoor honour's selection for aomination certain 'naines of artists and masicians are there. According to newspapera your honour bave selected 12 members for domination bat stul however if there be a vacancy or if it is possible through your honour's special power to nominate a man repretentiog Ayurveda, at 'my bomble request, the noble atep would be considered to be the greatest service to the great Sacred Scriptore which "would gain honour and justice tader your boooor's begiga rule, It would be a big stride in the service of the conatry, 6. It would be worth while here to propose the names of ! Valdya Ratoa Shivsharma of Labore, prezentig staying at Bombay for 'Kaviraj Aabotosh Mazomdarji of New Delbl, for the pomi. nation as Vaidya in the central legislature. * s.

1.***. The Governor of the Panjab has a right to homloata Porémbers. There also the name of Kaviraj Dharmadatta Chaudhary M. A. M. S. or some soch Vaidya-deserve mention 8. The Governor of Bombay cup honour by nomination Valdgaraj Shivebármaji who has been many often bonoored by "All India Ayurvedic Congress with the Presidentabip and who occapies a high place amonget the Vaidyas of India. The name of "Ayorveda Martand, Vaidyaraj Jadavji Trikamji Acharya also dererves a mention here. 9. The Governor of West Beogal can tbus bonoar Pandit" Shri Ramaarayan Sharm3, the Editor of Sachitra Ayurveda and a Vaidya of high reputation. These are certaio instances io the point at band while there are so many other Vaidyas of high repatation and repowo in every province that if their services are availed of the Goverament would gain mach. 10. Thus, I request your honour to advise all the provioces of India to nominate wortby Vaidyas for their respective "légiălatores and facilitate the work of Government ia preserving "the Pablic Health. 11.' In this way in 28 to 30 provinces the appointáent of the representatives of Ayurveda or the All Indla Ayorvedic Congrets would mean the uplift of ons glorioas ancient Scriptare and help and assistance to the Goveroment in the task. 6.-12. There are in India many digoified Vaidyas who can dlscharge the dotles even as Health Mlaisters at the Centre os Provlaces. These daya in the administration many Doctor of "Allopathy are given high status where as the Vaidyas haviog fegual or more qualifications are beiog neglected. They shopld be, on the contrary, given an equal opportunity to serve the pation and the Government. „13. Mahabharat, Ramayan and the works of history and politics malatain that io aocieata time learned Vaidyas occupied a respectable statas, say, of even a minister, in the administration of the country. .

65 *** *** TO - [9] Request to H. H. The Maharaja Shri Jam Saheb: to revive Ayurveda From: Shri Bhuvaneswari Pith, Gondal. Dated. 14-4-52 His Highness The Mabaraja Shri Jam Saheb Shri Sir Digvijayainhji Saheb Bahadar, G, C S. 1. etc. Rajpramokh Shri, Government of Saurashtra. Your Gracious Highnets, Astirwadag : Some days back at a ceremoney at a Science Research Institute at Nagpur, Your. Highoess, have according to news, made a worthy witty remark, in the course of the address to the following effect, about Yoor Highre-s's weight. Your research institute should make such a res.arch as would help me in reducing my weight." These words of Your Highness, though attered in natura) wit and bumour, certainly tell as the hard fact. Really, the weight of Your Higbrest have increased considerably than it was some years back and I believe, it is still increasing. Hence, it is gaite patural for Your Highnet and Your Highnesb's well-wishers to feel that something aboold be done to decrease the weight. 2. Vaidyak Shastras term this extraordinary and increasing weight to be oberity - Med-Vriddhi Those words of Your Higboers nourish ogr innermost fateat aim at doing something to reduce the weight. Your Highoe,s's friends, admirers and relatives also apare with care and sympathy with these natural remarks of Yoor Highness. I would corroborate this with the followiog lastance. 3. Oar motoal friend Cond! Comdr. Dr. Walter Seth Kippis of Orange, New Jersey (U.S.A.) has wittingly remarked as below, together with glowing words in admiration of Yoor Highnete, in the para of 4 bis letter of lith Nov. 1951 ".........There is bot one criticism I would offer of the Maharaja Saheb and that is I wish he would reduce in meigat which would give him so many more years of ancial life........." These witty words of this liarned friend reflect bis sincere aure about Your Highness' health, 66 1 To my reply to the above letter, on 27-11-51 I had written to him in para 10, as below: "Your bomoar in criticising the bulky body of Maharaja Shree is realy worthy of a close friend and well-wisber. As à devotee of Ayarveda I woald also like to request His Highneas to be miodfa! of the same. There are so many herbs that will do the work and will not diminish the strength and vitality of the body." In these words I had atsdied bim to redace the weight of Your Highness if Agarvedic drogs are takeo. 4. Copies of the letter from Dr, Seth Kipnis and my reply to him were despatched at the same time to Your Highnell and Her Highness Namdar Mabarani Shri Galabkanverba Sabeb, ; for perasal 5. Thas Your Highness would be pleased to know that 5 months before this Nagpur Address, I had referred to thli sobject with sarity to get the weight reduced through Ayurvedic medicines. To-day, I proclaim with certainty, asearance, mild- Dess and modesty that it is the Ayarvedic Medicines that would only prove perfectly efficacious in the case of atoppiog and reducing the increasing weigbt of Yoor Highpes. No other method will be more cificacions than that: Aynrvedic medicines, would give the least trouble but would bring a brilliant success in this case without bringing the least weakness to body., 6. Some steps certainly need be taken tefore the everincreasing weight would rffect the heart and other limbs of, iba body. I advise Your Highness to give due importance to the fact. 7. It would be just like building castles in the air to wait till that Science Rerearch Iostitate woald take years, to discover the remedy, make mapy experiments on other persons and finally prescribe for Your Highneet a certain drog that woaid prove osefol. In other words, it is next to impossible. We know that: Allopathy is patronised by the State and crorea, ol tapees are being spent after researches in it, yet no panacea hae yet been discovered for natty diseases like T. B, Cancre, Obesity (MED. VRIDDHI) Leprosy and many others; whereas Ayorveda and its Rasayan Sbattra give to us through noble tradition apd . 5 a heritage of oor ancient Adya Acharya, and Rishis and Manis who have diecovered ratert remedieo for those and other incorable dircases, through researches of ho drede of years and expozitnce extending over a vast period. But it is a matter of deep griel and regret that our own leaders, Rajas, Mabarajas, and opolent citizens atterly neglect them in this age. 8. It is only due to the wapt of pations that miraculous things of our Argan Scriptures have not come into light. Despite our present Role of the People our scriptores still share the ill fate of condemnation instead of good lack of encouragement. In the light of encouragement to other methods of medicines, if little support is extended to our Scie oce, I am certaio, the expert Vaidyan and savants of those scriptores would bring before the people marvellous things lying in the dark and thus oald enhance the glory and wealth of the country. We certainly grope for the very thing, we porters through heritage. It is nothing but the exhibition of our q964 a gff: the direct oat come of western learning and caltare, pot to give importance to our ancient Scriptores. 9. Medicines for every ditease, discovered by oor Acharyas are so elfective that, besides caring the specified direase, they vitalise other parts of the body without making them weak, whereas the medicines prescribed by allopathy generally core the specified diecage only to a certain extent aſſecting other limbt of the body adversely, Thas allopathy corce one disease bat creates many. Many cases of toch medicines and the patients who have tried them can be cited to tapport this view. 10. I am not the only on: to tender such a belicf bat many scholars of Europe and America sapport this view of mine. Not only that bot they strongly recommend their countrymen in anequivocal terms to leave allopathy and to resort to Ayorveda. Dr. Phil b, c Dr. jor, K. H. Klaas, Director of ICC., President NEBA of Bern, Switzerland, is the instance in the poiot lo bis letter of 20-11-51 to me he has very clearly written to me about the recent trends of apatby in the West, towards allopathy and gradual asa keolog of the people towards the noble scriptores of East. At the same time I had despatched a copy of the said letter to Yoor Highness and another to tbe workers of Gulab - 68"} Kanverba Aforvedic Society. This letter was published at that time in various periodicale sucb 73 Sichitra Ayurveda, of Calcutta etc. 11. Vaidyas can stop the increase is weight by prescribing the following and such other medicioes and reduce the weight already iacreared. If Your Highness select the Ayarvedic treatment, I can assure that, withoat affecting the vitality of the body, ope indigenous drags would redace with efficacy, the weight at the rate of 40 lbs. a year approximately. We take for instance the following prescription. 1. Arogya-vardhani. 5. Chyavaoprarh Avaleha. 2. Loh Rasayan. 6. Chandraprabba Goggal. 3. Medab-Shosbi Rasa. 7. Yograj Goggol 4. Yogendra Rasa 8. Maha Sarawati Sara. (The total weight of ingredients amounting to 140 tolas, according to Sahatriya Patha) Special preparations of Loh, Abhrak, Gaggal etc. in yoga' with other drcgs can be deed. There and certain other medicines also can be used independents or in yoga with other proper drage 12. If Your Highness decide to take the Ayarvedic modo of treatment Yoor Highness may first convene a small meeting of learned Ayurvedic Physicians to discuss the problem They would pot their heads together and uganimously decide haviog considered folly all the symptoms for obesity, as to how many drugs are to b: coupoanded and prescribed. Having that comiog to decisioa about the presccription if Your Highness think it proper to ate the drogs after getting somc of them prepared ander the aapervision of the committce of Vaidyar, it may be 10 arranged by them. 13. When Your Highness, bave pot this problem before the scholars for discussion and rescarch by the address at Nagpor, I consid:r it a matter ol pridc for os to let Your Highness rccognise what Ayurveda nas to say in the matter. When Yocr Higbocsi's wits and words tpread in the whole world a question woald at once be raised with crprise before the world as to, how is it that Maharaja Shri trbo has donaled lack of ropese altcr thc researcb in the valoable treatise ol Chark Sambila, could pat fied a tiogle recedy from it that would reduce the weight and His Highnes bad to put the matter before scienco 69 regearch intitates working on western lines ! Glory of Ayarveda and Charka Samhita diminishes a great deal when sach problemi arīge. While hundreds of learned scholars in Earope an America evioce their interest is Ayurveda, presenting before them its pristine glory and gird up their loing to propogate 'Ayurveda and its medicines in their countries to make their people immane from diseases, a great leading personality of India, Yoar High- Dets, gaze at the West for hope and inspiration. To pat it with modesty, it is the Ayurveda that only can falfill this work with bandred percent success. When sach is the potency of Ayurveda do expert of Ayurveda can disregard that atterance of Your Highnest. 14. Of course, this problem of Your Highness is strictly persopal, but as Your Higboess's worthy self made it poblic, I as a devotee of Ayurveda though writing this letter to Yoar Highpess also pat hambly before the public for fellow researchers and those who are interested in order to show them what Ayarveda can do in the matter. This age-old usefol system of Ayarveda bas been interwoven with the 90 percent of people of our country and it helps them to be free from diseases and maintain good health. 15. In order to pat the matter, clearly the letter bat been rather elaborate for wbich I beg excase. 16. It is well known to me that Yoar Higboess and tbe Royal family evince deep faith in our tradit onal Aryan fcriptaret. It is not a matter of earprise bat it it qoite natural for yoar Highaeus the descendant of Lord Shri Krishna Hence, Aparveda bopes for support from Your Highness, occupying digaified status at bomo and abroad. 17. I bless Your Highness that may Yoor Higaners lead a happy healthy life of fall 100 years, may Your Highness's cberished desires be fulfilled and be able to serve the Motherland for very long time. With Vedokta Ashirvadas, I remain, Your Highness's most sincerely, ॥ श्रीचरणतीर्थः॥ (Rasethacharya Shricharagatirtha Mabaraj) + 70 [10] Hon'ble the Health Minister at the Centre, The Times of India and Maharaj Shri on Rural Health Sərvices, (Covering Lettor) From : To The Editor, Ragsshala, Gondal The Times of India, BOMBA Y. It bus delighted ,71 * me more at a time when I was just going to make a press statemont about it bat now thinking that they will be delal, I coorey to you by this.. those yary views of miso, os the subject. . 1. It has been evident oa many an occasion daring tbe tenars of bør office from the begioning till to-day that Shri Rajkumari Amrit Kaur is strictly apathetic towards Ayurveda and completely inclined towards Allopathy. Her address, with a support from our Honourable Prime Minister Pandit Nehra, before the conference, of the Health Ministeri, hold laat year, provides only one of the many instancos in the point. Oo realising the esaltant reaction, in lacs of villages of India, arising from Her * apathetic viows about Ayarveda, if she would bare now metamorphosod ber outlook and agreed not to eyince “Step-motherly" attitado, ib. people loving Ayurveda and the Vaidyas too would thank her the most, It is our ordent wish that if she would try to be familiar with Ayarvoda, know its intrinsic worth and coming into close contact with veteran Vaid; as, try to imbibe how the Vaidyas care the incorablo disouses, diroarded as such by the allopathio doctors, she would berself be a great loyor and admirer of Ayurveda. 2. Even "Step motherly" inclination for Ayarvoda, wo wlab, is worthy of a warm welcome, becette the very word itself bogeesta of Bomo greater favour to the individual or institation of one's owa liking and a little lecser towards the other party. But here, on the contrary, in Intolerable policy on the port of the Halth Department is well manifest ia trampling, uprooting and destroying Aurveda as against allopatby, erd honce a more dreadfal similie than only · Step-wotborly ” would be mors doserving. It is not only tajast on the part of one to form or express an opinion, favourable or otherwiso about the Shastra in which there lo do Insight, experience or knowledge, bot it is also out of one's proylace, howoter great personality ono may be. 3. It she does not intend to tender "top-motborly" attitado towards Ayurveda, sbo boald, at the oatset, ask ber on Department to stop iosaing frequent Coclidential-circulars' agilost the Vaidyau Thero ang detonal provlocial offioers who kaow the potency of Ayarredo, sod its importance in the service of the people of large and try to work to do direction of its internet. Such officers are many often at their wils ead, looking to the attitate of their bigberegthorities at the catrs, abect vestering wythlog in te song of Ayerrodąale time when tbe dera of its aplift sad progress is distinctly realised by them. Aragments may bo made by ber to cipel esch dread from tho bearts of those wbo adaolro Ayurveda Espert Yridges bould be placed on deserting High should Bathoritative posts, so that they can even guide aright the officers pie judiced against Ayurveda and absolately 003 are in the radiments of the this Master Science, and wbon problems, Ayurvedic, arise, they would propido convincing solutions. To-day only the doctors are given promloent places in the Health services at the contro or provinces. Learned Vaidyas sbanld also be given equal importance as thore are ippomerable such expert Vaidyas in India, who besides, boing tho 'masters' in the knowledge of Ayurveda are baxing admirable jasigut into allopathy also. Thus, combining higher quslificatioos in the science, they can well compete with the doctors. 4. Oar honourable minister should recogaisa that it is an activity in the disregard, disrespect and disinterest of the peoplo of Indis, to aim at distortiog or destroying a science, which has acquired an eclecmod place, which is interroten in their every worldly or religions daties beginning from birth to death which through ages is in the hearts and life of the poople, and which has been imparting to them (all bealth, making them icmane from diseases. Really speaking, the anthority in power prudentially accept and utilise this Shastra, beneficial to the poople, and thus achiote en esteetable placo in the hearts of the people. B. Handreds of doctors and practitioners, occupying, conspicuous places amonget their own people and state, in Europe and America, bate begao, sino many years, plaging Ayaryoda on a higher status than Allomatby. This fact is well rellected in thene wspapers and other literaturo of those respective countries. Wo are also well aware of this situation dao to Rasasbals Aushadbasbram's contact with the estern countrier. · Testern practitioners too strougly recommend the use of Ayorvedio medicinca, to care 90 p. o of the diseases that can be cured without Operation. Meay of those doctors themselves bare also began to do odr Agarredlo medicines lo most cases, Oor correspondency, with Dr. Klaus of Switzerland, is aa instance to the mattor. The Govoroment, of to progressito country, like Rassia, has also began svipolog interest in Ayurveda, 6. During their domain ol 200 years to India, the Britisboro bad made bergolesa efforts to produco small or big degree-Lolder doctors, tot Ibo mala intoation of them is this project was to otllls these doctors as their own agents for usheriag lato lodus tbo eorgical instruments as well As sredicions mado la their op0 CODDIY sad thas to enrich Great Britalo through those virtual agents of thels wiadhetarpi. 7. It was thus dngned assy till to-day, crores of rapess from India. Derlag tbels administration more stress we laid on the sculpity ol $ 74 10. Dar administrators themselves agreo that Doctors and Norses are genorsliy disinclined to go and settle amongst the village folk, and therefore, they dream about trainiog the people in rural areas as Doctor aids sad Nurse-aid: and make them able to attend the daily needs of village people, but it is an impossible task to achieve. Hence, if it is not considered a risks to train the villagers with superficial koowledge in allopathic syetem and entrasting them the lives of people, why should the Gramya-Vaidyas, already possessiog general knowledge in Ayurveds, bo deemed dangerous for the purpose ? There is no harm, in recognising tbem, training them with soppleraeotary neelal information in the science and thus allow them to serve the villages because they are lolly fouillar with the temperament, modes of living, satare of diseases and physica) condition of the villago people. 11. Dar reprezealelives of tho people sitting in the Parliament should ao evinos interest in matters Ayurvedio and kpow that even the superfloial koowledge of Allopatby to be imbibod by the villagors, according to the piows of the Health Minister, is to be began by them guito alrcsbe and it would be ansitable to their aalare, mode of living and mesas, whereas it their knowledge of Ayurveda is supplemented and ap! encouragement given to them they would be able to Arto the village peoplo moro systematically, which they are already doing, in a way, by to knowledge gained by them through inheritance. 19. Old men and women, barbers, school teachers, brahmins-reading Bacred stories and small Vaidyas etc. in overy village, are treating and rerving the villago psople, in accordance with their knowledge, experience, potes into ancient Roescripts inberited by them. In lacs of emull nad big villages in India, thero aro maudy Dsouscripts dealing with treatm.pl of discascs by indigraots aystem. Soch manuscripts may often contais tho literatara abad) 10 roaderíal medicinos AX Tould a 130 even qualified Vaidyas Rod Doctors. If the Gramya-Valdyas thas proficient in the relecco aro patronleed in their profeeslod, each locs of rare Ayarreda thanoacrime written in Sanskrit nad provlocial languages, world pole out sad tto cotatry would gain rock from them. Thos, ro baye mask to impart to the Gramya-raidya, la order to moderpico them, the edocated doctors, Faidju ard Halims tayo also to learn a lot from them. Ja lopartiog medical instruction to villagers, ho can tell the absol freemary allopathic drogs er siem, in paglag, bat tko oscicat of the kaowledge to be imparted bould be Ayarsela oaly, 13. Those viilsge people of the Unnga-Valdgal, even today proapis sad rully obula arenal of the regolablo, aloeral sad salsal the sobstances, required for preparing medicises, as they can be found readily from riverside, streamlets, foreats, fields and out-skrits of each and every villago. They do not require to stare dependently at the cities for getting them. If the allopathio system is followed they will have to be dependeat, for all the above things. This way the system of indigenous drogs would B8rve as a means to save crores of ropees of the government. The eurity of the fact that the Ayurveda is the only practical system to keep the prople free from diseases and preserve their health, ebaking off the d rendency in watters medical, will be realised by the Government in very near future if not to-lay. 14. It is a matter for cala consideration that the pablic bealth, before only 50 years from our days, was very round and people were long-lived, atont and stordy, whereas the position in our times is the most regrettable. This can be well realised even to-day if we look at stout bodies of villagers and our own elderly members of the family. Hence, it is goite evident that, despite the progressive means coming on scene right from the British rale, the life and health of the people are being gradually decreased day by day. What reasons can be pat forward in this o se? The Britishers well koew them but our leaders have peter tried to ponder over them. 15. After the war of independence in 1857, the policy of the Britishers, regarding public health, was very raincns. They knew that most of the Indian populace are non-vegetarians As to the nourishing animal elemeats required by the body, they get them sofficently from milk, card, ghee, wbey, butter eto.. In order to make tbem hardly inaccessible they begaa, as a part of their crooked policy, the terrible cow-blaogbter in India, which was never even dreamt by the Indian peoplo and which did not bappen even during the role of any of the Mobaramedia Emperors. They carried this heinous task to such an externe tbat lacs of cows began to be slaughtered. They developed even the business of the flesh and skin on a very large scale, in a country, where the people worship the com as the Divine Blother. This has gives terrible blow to the pablic health. 16. The gradual reduction is the noarichiog elements of boman bodics, mede toem feeble aud short-lived. A day was there when it war deemed to be a 2.0 to seli the Go-raz (aik etc.), and still however, even if some p:ople used to sell it, people got it at very cheap ratez, say, 2 ponds for one To-day, even at sky bigb sales of, say, 12 annas or a rupee, we get only impore milk adulterated with water or powder. British anna.

76 sponsored dairies from where the mijk etc. are robbed of the life-giving elements, and the sprcad of the injurious addicitioa to tea, have also told heavily on pablic health, an the scarcity of milk has been increased a lot by them. Tbos the destruction of cattle-ihe wealth of the nation, causiog the decrease of natore prodaced from cattle droga etc., and the decrease in the stock of bullocks have brought devastating inflaeace on our field products. It is dae to these reasons that food-staffs are getting very dear everyday. 17. In order to add to the above list of nation-anpililatlog elements the epidemic in the form the nation. Thas, it would he clear, that onprecedented scarcity of nourishing foods like milk, ghee and food-graios, addiction to evil habits and wanton. negs in lives acquired throogh blindly imitating western fashions deplorable state in getting even fall.bread for the belly, spread of artificial enbstances like vegetable ghee, all these, combined together have been instramental in making the bodies of people emaciated, week, feeble, full of diseases and unfit to live even 21 baman beioge. Besides planning to provide Doctors, Vaidyas nurter Hakims, medicines etc. to free the people from diseases, the Government needs consider the primary plan of providiog noorishing elements to the bodies of the people, because since aiz to seven years last every year that parteo is ao tersible and patural and man-made calamities have made the people 80 belpless that crores of people do not get even a meal for once a day and if they sabroit before the Crael Destiny, falling a prey to various diseases, it is not amazing. Besides the medical treatment, if people get enough food and elements to maintain and nourish the body, they would reqaire little medicine to regaia robust health. 18. Iostead of meaking medicines within the reach of every village, the Government needs first to consider the worklog ont of a serious plan to do away with food-control and enable the villagers to maintain a com in every home, so that a great economic borden on the Goverament in supplying the people the noorishiog elements, will be lessened a great deal.

19 25. The prejudice and disdain against Agarveda, the outcome of the policy of the British, formed by our Doctor administrators,' are still working against its interest. Ayorveda has been pat at the mercy of those who do not know even radiments of this geat science, bat when any work aboat a Shastra is entrusted to its experts, it is realy deemed to be practical, just and in fitness of things. Perhaps, the Doctors might be sastaining the fear that if the authority of Ayurveda is accepted, it may in fotore occupy a leading place even in the politics aud their own glory may diminish; Bat this fear is oat of place. The “Rantiya'.-spioning wheel of Mabatma Gandhiji coming in forefront, the mills have not been locked ap, and the steering of the administration being, entrasted to the Indians themselves, ao disorders or chaog, accordiag to the belief the Britishers, has spread in the country, 26. Ayarveda beving been given dae place apd patronage, our doctors will have to go deep into science and they only they would also become the fastest devotees of the Ayurveda like the western degree-holdiog doctors of the west take pride in placing before the public, as a duty incombent opon them the glory and worth of Ayurveda and thus regard towards our sacred science. I can cite bere two intances in the point, oat of many. As the great Sanskritist Dr. Max Moller took pride in appending the word Bhatt before his name, Dr. Klass of Switzerland and Dr. Kipnis of New York, also exolt in effixing the Vaidya, Agarvedacharya etc. with their names. Here in India too there are inpamerable Allopathic Doctors who admire and practite with pride the Ayarveda, amongst them ye can mention the game of Dr. P. M. Mabta of Jamnagar. 27. In order to discuss the problem in details, the letter has been ugasnally long, for which I big your pardon. Shri Bhavageshwari Pith, ॥ॐ तत्सत् ॥ GONDAL (Saurashtra ) Yours sincerely, 11 ftauratef: 11 Rasesbacharya ShriCbariatictba Maharaj) 1 22. It followa from this long discussion that it is in the ioterest of the country, politically, practically and economically, to patronize and protect the indigenous system of medicines Ayurveda. Dae to the want of its recognition and patronage from the State, it has not been able to keep pace with the world going ahead by leaps and boonde, but if it is well protected, its potency to become the part and parcel of the national prosperity, through Dhatavada (Alchemy ) and variops other scriptoree, can well be realised. 23. The learned people and scholars of the world are inclined towards Aydrveda only because the priaciples, 'propoonded by this scripture, siace thousands of years ago, are even apto this day goflinching, anchanged, non-risky, harmless and noi. versally beneficial to the people of any part of the world; whereas most of the established principles of Allopathy prove to be injaricos even within a period of 2-4 years, after disastrong experimentation on homan lives. Looking through these viewpoints even, making the use of Allopathy limited, 10 far as surgery is concerned, Ayarveda sbould be given prominent place in the treatment of diseases, and the stadies in Ayarvedic sorgery should be encoaraged. This way. within a few years Ayurveda will come to the (crefront in surgery and treatment both. 24. The Chopra Corr.mittee appointed by the Goveroment, other investigation commissions, All India Ayorvedic Congress, that came into existence since sixty years and which is ad Inititation as old as the National Congress, its sessions and; workers, leading Vaidys of the country etc., bave variously and distinctly submitted before the Government, the potency and possibilities in Ayurveda, bat the Britisbers did not pay attention to them and to-day also our Goveroment mostly ran on by Pleaders and Doctors, have not deemed any daty at doing anything in the matter. We had also, earlier op 7-4-50, after her address in the Parliament at that time, written, a detailed letter, to our Hon'ble Health Minister, discassing mainly the problem of Gramya- Vaidya!, and also many other problems of Ayurveda. The copics of oor correspondence with western scholars, mentioned berein, are also sent to her frequently and at the very moment.
