ADDITIONAL NOTE From the Vikramankadevacharita Though this poem tells us but little actually about the Eastern Chalukyas themselves, it gives very plain indications as to the circumstances which enabled them to seize the sovereignty of their most powerful neighbours, the Cholas, The poem states Vikramaditya VI (of the Western Chalukya line) repeatedly defeated the Cholas, plundered Kanchi and conquered Gangakunda and Vengi. Gangakunda is evidently the Gangikonda-cholapuram or Gangapuri of Kalingattu Pirani which has now dwindled into a small village, still bearing the name of Gangaikondaso. puram in the north-eas: corner of the Trichinopoly district. Kanchi is constantly spoken of in the poem as if it were the capital or the city of next importance after the capital. And in support of the alleged conquest of Vengi, it may be noted that there are inscriptions, dated in the reign or era of Vikramaditya VI at Draksharama in the Godavery district. The wars with the Cholas had commenced, a fact, before this time; for the poem claims that Vikramaditya VI's father stormed Kanchi, the capital of the Cholas driving its ruler into the jungles; and though of course in the poem the victory is always claimed for the as

PREFACE The importance of historical works, every statement in which is culled from contemporary records cannot be too much ernphasised. All the information of importance contained in the inscriptions belonging to the Eastern Chalukyas is incorporated in this work. On the other hand every sentence in the work is found in one or other of the inscriptions. The work of the author has been confined to their arrangement in a connected form. The Age of the Chalukyas is important in Indian History in as much as it was the period of Brahmanic revival and literary progress in Southern India. The present work also reveals the popularity which the Sanskrit language enjoyed in Southern India long after it ceased to be a spoken language. I am indebted to Professor K. R. Subrahmanya Iyer, M.A., PH. D., Head of the department of History and Ecommics in the Maharajah's English College, Vizianagaram for the readiness with which he complied with my request to write an Introduction to this work. He discussed in it the historical, social and literary conditions of Southern India in the four and half centuries of Chalukyan power. I am also indebted to the Proprietor if the Vavilla Press for the speedy manner in which he ii carried on the printing of the work and for the excellent get-up of the same. My brother, P. V. Ramanujaswami, M.A., Principal, Maharajah's Sanskrit College Vizianagaram was of great help to me in the preparation of the work. The notes at the end are from the volumes of the Indian Antiquary in which the Eastern Chalukya inscriptions were published. THE AUTHOR.
INTRODUCTION By Dr. K. R. Subrahmaniam, MA., Ph. D. Professor of History and Economics, Maharajah's College, Vizianagaram. It gives me very great pleasure to write an introduction to this book. Sriman Paravastu Lakshmi Narasimhaswami garu, a well-known scholar belonging to a family of scholars, has done a distinct service in collecting together and publishing in a connected form such parts of the Eastern Chalukyan inscriptions as would make a continuous story from the origin of the Chalukyas down to Kulottunga Chola II (ac. 1133 A.D.) This garland of verses reveals how much of beautiful literature is concealed in these inscriptions. There is evidence enough in this collection to show the state of Sanskrit literature, the varied literary forms and the evolution of the culture which nurtured the tender Telugu sapling. For, it was during this era of about four and a half centuries that Brahminism revived in Andhradesa and Telugu literature began under its auspices. Another very interesting feature in these inscriptions is the evolution of the script which was, remarkably enough, followed in Farther India. The Chalukyas were of the lunar race. They claim to have come from the north. As the story goes, Vijaya- 2 was sons ditya came south and encountered by Trilochana Pallava, was killed in battle. His infant son, Vishnuvardhana was brought up by a Brahmin of Mudivemu, Vishnubhatta Somayaji. He became a great conqueror. His son Ranaraga. His son was Pulikesi, founder of Vatapi. His were Kirtivarman and Mangalesa, both of them valiant kings. Pulikesi son of Kirtivarman was the most famous. The exploits of these kings have been enshrined in fine verses by Ravikirti, author of the Aihole epigraph. Pulikesi II conquered Andhra and made his younger brother Vishnuvardhana Viceroy in 615 A.D. He won his spurs in Pulikesi's digvijaya. He ruled for 18 years and left the kingdom independent of the main line at Vatapi. He patronised learning and his queen built a temple to Jina. He was very kind to the Brahmins and to the poor. The firm establishment of a Kanarese dynasty in Andhra had great cultural consequences, Vishnuvardhrna had two sons Jayasimha (632-563) and Indrabhattaraka who reigned only for a few days. Indra's son Vishnuvardhana II ruled for 9 years (663-672). Jayasimha w a great scholar, warrior and ruler. He had great devotion to scholars and institutions for learning. Dandin gives a varied menu of knowledge which was imbibed by the Princes of his time. A careful study of the Eastern Chalukyan inscriptions reveals how great care was bestowed on the education of the princes in arms, useful arts, fine arts and statecraft. There were several great Vedic scholars in the reign of Jayasimha who gave lands to them 4 His son Vijayaditya ruled from 747 to 766. Then came his son Vishnuvardhana IV, 766-802. Vijayaditya II, his son ruled from 802 to 842. Kali Vishnuvardhana son of the second Vijayaditya ruled for 18 or 20 months followed by his son Vijayaditya III, 844-888. The Rashtrakutas over threw the Chalukyas of Vatapi in about Saka 675 and ruled over the Deccan for about two centuries. During this period there was incessant warfare between the Rashtrakutas and the Eastern Chalukyas. The copper plates of both the dynasties indicate a number of sanguinary conflicts. The war took a turn for the worse when Bhima Salukki, the younger brother of Vijayaditya II joined the Ratta foe. But Vijayaditya II rose to the occasion and destroyed the Gangas and the Ratta generals after warring with them for 12 years and drove out Bhima Salukki, the traitor. He is said to have fought night and day with his enemies in 108 battles and built 108 temples to Siva in memory of his victories. The devastating war ended by the marriage of a Ratta princess to his son. But the respite was short-lived as Kali Vishnuvardhana seems to have lost his life in repelling the invasion of Amoghavarsha I. His short reign showed his grasp of Political Science and great military skill. He enforced Varnashrama Dharma. Three sons were left by Kali Vishnu. The last joined the Ratta enemy against his eldest brother Vijayaditya III. A big confederacy had been formed against the king of Andhra. But Vijayaditya had a great general 5 more Panduranga who was the hero in many a battle. He first reduced the twelve forts of the Boyas of Nellore, captured the fort of Kathevaram and recovered Vengi which had evidently passed under the enemy. Krishna and Sankilathe Ratta and the Vaidumba-were frightened away after Panduranga took and burnt Kiranapura. Mangi Nolamba, another confederate, was beheaded in the war. The Pallava and the Pandya too joined against Vijayaditya. So the Andhra hero routed them, conquered Kalinga and Kosala and burnt Chakrakuta. These engagements must have obtained for him epic fame. He took even high-sounding titles than his grand-father. All the wealth that he took in his expeditions he gave away in charities. Krishna II, Rashtrakuta, waited only for the death of Vijayaditya to overrun Vengi. Chalukya Bhima I could crown himself only four years after his uncle's death in 892 A.D. as his capital was in the enemy's hands, Ultimately Bhima expelled Krishna and routed in battle his allies, the King of Lata and the Chalukya Baddega. His son Irimartiganda, barely 16, died in the war. Mahakala was Bhima's great general. The King was also served by the loyal Pattayardbini family which had produced such distinguished warriors like Kalakampa (7th century) and Panduranga. Bhima patronised poets, musicians and dancers, some of whom were non-Andhras. His grant to a songstress Challava seems to be a love poem on copper. Bhima's son Vijayaditya IV ruled only for six months. He was called ruler of Vengi and Trikalinga. He seems 6 war. to have planted a pillar of victory at Virajapuri, perhaps after a Ratta His general was Pattavardhini Bhandanaditya. His son Amma I ruled in 918–925. Govinda IV Rashtrakuta was the contemporary of as many as eight kings of Vengi beginning with Vijayaditya IV Kollabhiganda. He took keen interest in the Eastern Chalukyan family dissensions and fomented them to promote his own interests. Amma I destroyed his traitorous relations, turned back the Ratta foe and shifted his capital to Rajahmundry as Vengi was very vulnerable to attacks by the enemy from the Deccan. Ammaraja's two sons, Beta or Kanthika Vijayaditya and Bhima, were too young. Set aside and imprisoned after a fortnight's rule by Tadapa, Beta lived to found a subordinate branch. Tidapa or Talapa was the son of Yuddhamalla the traitor-brother of Vijayaditya Ill. He ruled only month. Vikrariaditya uncle of Amma I ruled Bhima second of Amma I ruled for eight months. Then civil war broke out and the crown passed on to Yuddhamalla son of Talapa. He ruled for seven years (927-934) Vengi became the battle-ground of adventurers and Bhima II, half brother of Amma I drove out the exploiting foreigners and Yuddhamalla ascended the throne. “Having, unaided, slain the glorious Rajamayya (Ganga Rachamalla) and the mighty Dhalaga (Sabara chief ?) and the fierce Tatabikki (Telugu Chola ?) and one son a year then.
7 Bijja (Banavasi chief?) and Ayyapa (Nolamba) who was always ready and was exceedingly powerful in war and the terrible and fierce army that was despatched by Govindaraja (Ratta) and the great Lovabikki the ruler of the Cholas and the valorous Yuddhamalla and his drawn up array of elephants...this King Bhima protected the whole earth for 12 years ” (934-945.) Yuddhamalla's inscription in the Mallesvaraswami temple at Bezwada is in Telugu poetry and thus it is an important contribution to our meagre knowledge of early Telugu. "It takes the history of Telugu literature at least two centuries back.” The most striking feature of the epoch of our study is the slow evolution of Telugu language, script and literature which can be traced through the inscriptions. Merely a spoken language to start with, it becomes respectable enough to be used by kings in their epigraphs. A few stray words occur in the earliest inscriptions, then a few sentences and ultimately whole inscriptions are composed in the popular language. It thus became the vehicle of higher thoughts, the instrument to popularise ancient culture when once it was adopted by the kings, nobles and Brahmins for making grants, keeping records and writing books. The Vipparla and Lakshmipuram epigraphs and the unreadable Ahadanakaram grant are gramophone records for all time for people to hear the birthpangs of Telugu. Readable Telugu verse can be had in some of the Nellore inscriptions of the ninth century and it gains elegance as we pass on through the verses of 8 Yuddhamalla at Bezwada. Sanskrit seems to have suffered temporarily on account of the new language as we can see from the corrupt language of the inscriptions but, ultimately both gained as is evidenced by the Miltonic style of the immortal work of Nannayya and by the beautiful Sanskrit verses in the epigraphs of Rajaraja and Virachoda. The Kolavennu grant of Chalukya Bhima II pays a very high compliment to the family of Kommana and refers to the grant of agraharas to Brahmins who were learned. In those days learning was preserved by rote and the Brahmins were charged with the duty of conserving and adding to knowledge. That was why Brahmins were given rent-free lands and freed from the worry of seeking their livelihood. But for these grants our history would be almost a blank ! Simple, temperate, conservative and loyal, the Brahmins preserved social order and interpreted the good old laws of the land. Some of them were composers of the verses in the grants, some of them scholars in Vedas, Puranas or Smritis, some of them priests, some of them ministers or other officers while others were teachers to princes and people, astrologers, village headmen etc. We get a large number of names of scholars and poets who flourished in the Eastern Chalukyan period. Some of them were even generals like Medamarya son of Potana in the reign of Virachoda. Some of them came from far off Tamil, Maratha and Kannada countries, 9 Amma II (945-970)* was the son of Chalukya Bhima Il. He superseded his elder brother by a different mother, Danarnava. Made Yuvaraja at eight, crowned Maharaja at twelve, Ammaraja was a precocious youth, a loving brother, a scholar and patron of letters and fine arts, a king loved equally by Jains and Brahmins. He showed his valor in battles against the great Ratta King Krishna III who instigated Kalinga and set up the sons of Yuddhamalla, Badapa and Tala against the Andhra king. Amma was defeated and exiled in 970. Danarnava held out and ruled for three years (970-973) when Badapa and Tala overwhelmed him also. Ammaraja has made some grants to Jains. He was also devoted to Hara and his family deity Hari. Kumarila, an Andhra and Sankaracharya must have accelerated the decline of Jainism. The Jains contribution to the Dravidian vernaculars not small and the early Jain Kanarese poets Pampa, Ponna and Nagavarman belonged to Vengidesa. was was We do not know how long Badapa and Tala ruled. As they were usurpers the legitimate line that ascends the throne again in 1000 A.D. treats the whole period 973- 1000 as a period of anarchy. Perhaps after the death of the two brothers there was disorder. A Telugu Chola, Jata Choda Bhimanripati took hold of a large part of Andhra and he was dispossessed by Rajaraja, the great Chola emperor of the south. It might be that Danarnava * Cf. stanza 75 on page 20 of the text.
10 who still lived invited Rajaraja. The old line was restored. Saktivarman son of Danarnava became king (999--1011). His younger brother Vimaladitya ruled for seven years. He was the son-in-law of Rajaraja Chola. His son the famous Rajarajanarendra ruled in 1018--1061.* He was the son-in-law of Rajendra Chola. In his reign lived the famous scholars Nannayya Bhatta and Narayana Bhatta. He had a good deal of trouble with his brother Vijayaditya who usurped the throne at least twice and crowned his son Saktiyarman king on 18--10-1061 after Narendra's death. Sakti died next year and Vijayaditya became Viceroy under Kullottunga 1 his nephew (Narendra's son) who became Chola einperor. Vijayaditya reconciled himself to the new position only out of sheer necessity. He had sought the help of the Western Chalukya of Kalyani but in vain. The Cholas, the enemies of the Chalukyas of the Deccan were interested in keeping Andhradesa out of their sphere of influence. Kulottunga I (1070-1118) was one of the greatest of the Chola emperors. Like his mother Ammangi, his wife too was a Chola Princess. His predecessor on the Chola throne had become unpopular, thanks to his Western Chalukyan relation and perhaps also the organised opposition of the Vaishnavas whom he persecuted. He was assassinated and Kulottunga ascended the throne. Southern influences filtered into Andhra from the first marriage alliance between the Chola and Eastern * Cf. stanza 110 on page 25 of the text.
11 Chalukyan royal families. They increased after Kulottunga's accession to the Chola throne. A new literary zeal, a wave of Vaishnavism rolling over the land, then a wave of Saivism emanating from Draksharama, renewed temple building activity-these are attributable to some extent to the Chola-Chalukya contact. Andhra was governed by Rajaraja, the second son of Kulottunga, after Vijayaditya. He became home-sick and returned after a year's rule (1076_-1077). Then came his younger brother Vira Choda, He ruled in the first instance for five years (1078----1083)* then was recalled and posted again in (1088-1093). The intervening period was occupied by his brother Rajaraja Choda Ganga's viceroyalty (1084--1088). The Capital of Vira Choda was Jananathapuri near Cocanada. He settled near Pithapuram a large number of Brahmin families from the banks of the Kaveri and organised an interesting communal life for them. At Chelluru a Vishnu temple was built by Medamarya, a Vaishnava Brahmin general of Vira Choda. The Viceroy gaye lands to the temple and in so doing has praised the remarkable qualities of his general who had dug a tank at Chelluru and opened two free boarding houses for Brahmins at Pithapuram and Draksharama. From the Chellur grant of Vira Choda we also hear of the cabinet of five ministers that he had. We learn from earlier grants also that there was such a council besides a well-organised * Cf. stanza 137 on page 30 of the text.
12 administration in which responsibility was localised in the hands of nobles who were in charge of districts. A magnificent Puranic and legendary genealogy is woven for the Chalukya family and grand birudas and lanchanas are assumed from about this time. Perhaps it was in Vira- Choda's tiine that a grand expedition was led from Dravida by Karunakara Tondaman for the conquest of Kalinga. Vikrama Chola was Viceroy of Andhra for some years before 1118 when he left to succeed his father on the Chola throne. Then the real power was in the hands of the Velnati chiefs. In the reign of Kulottunga II son of Vikrama Chola who ruled as Emperor in 1133–1146, a governor and general of Vengi having his capital on the Kolleru named Katamanayaka gave an agrahara to number of Brahmins, a The son and successor of Kulottunga II, Rajaraja II (1146-73) made the Velnati chief Rajendra Chola the ruler of Andhradesa. Even the shadow of Chola suzerainty disappeared in a few years and the whole kingdom was dismembered. This short sketch of Eastern Chalukyan history, it is hoped, may help the reader of the following epic of the Eastern Chalukyan kings in contemporary laboriously culled by the learned author from epigraphs scattered in many publications. verses

2 NOTES ment in Ganga grants which connects their real with their Puranic genealogy. The foundations for this portion of the genealogy are the facts that the Chalukyas did come orginally from the north and found the Pallavas in posses: sion of some of the territories afterwards acquired by themselves, coupled with the Kadamba tradition that the founder of that family was Trinetra or Trilochana. P. 3, 1 11. With the mountain, Chalukyagiri, we may compare the Nandagiri fort which, according to the Kakatiya legend, was founded by Nanda, the son of Uttungabhuja. Nanda's father, in a similar manner came from Upper India and settled to the south of the Godavary. In a similar fashion, the mountain, Mahendragiri- in this case a really existing mountain--is introduced into the traditions of the Gangas of Kalinga. P. 3, 1. 12. These are the Eastern Chalukya insignia. They are : the white umbrella, the single conch-shell, the panchamahasabda, the paliketana, the double drum, the boar-crest, the bunch of feathers of a peacock's tail, the spear, the throne, the makaratorana, the golden sceptre, the Ganga and the Yamuna, and others which are not particularised. A somewhat similar list of insignia is given in the case of the Gangas of 'Kalinganagara. The terms Ganga and Yamuna probably denote the images of two Goddesses as personifications of the rivers. These were also Rashtrakuta insignia. These two emblems must have been derived by some means or another, from the early Guptas, in the temples of whose period the CHALUKYA CHARITAM 3 Ganga and the Yamuna, as goddesses, constantly appear as an architectural embellishment. P.3, 1. 20. Vishnuvardhana became famous afterwards as Jayasimha. P. 4, 1. 1. Ranaraga was also known as Vijayadityat Ranaraga was, perhaps, a title. His mother was of Pallava descent, cf. तस्यासीद्विजयादित्यो विष्णुवर्धनभूपतेः । पल्लवान्वयजाताया HEICO area: 11 P. 4, 1. 4. The town Vatapi has not been correctly localised. Perhaps it is the same as the modern Badami, the well-known remains at which are quite enough to show that it was in former times a place of much importance. P.4, 1.7. The Nalas were perhaps the rulers of the district known as Nalavadi in the Bombay Presidency ; or perhaps a portion of the Kalinga country, including probably the Berars. The Mauryas were evidently the rulers of North Konkana and the Kadambas ruled over the western parts of Belgaum and Dharwar districts and eastern part of North Kanara district. The Kadamba King defeated by Kirtivarman was probably Krishnavarman II. P. 4, 1. 16. Kalacchuri was the Haihaya family ruling in Gujarat and Malwa. P. 4, 1. 18. Revatidvipa is identified with modern Redi in the Ratnagiri district in the Bombay Presidency.
4
NOTES
P. 5, 1. 18. The Vanavasi fort on the banks of the
Varada river in the North Kanara district of the Bombay
Presidency was the capital of the Kadambas.
P.6, 1. 14. The greatest achievement of Pulikesin is
his defeat of Harsha, the paramount sovereign of Northern
India. This victory, mentioned also by Hiuen Tsiang, is
made inuch of in the inscriptions of his successors and
Pulikesin, after the defeat of Harsha, assumed the title of
Parameswara.
P. 7, l. 4. Kosala or rather south Kosala might
be the south-east portion of the Central Provinces between
the Mahanadi and the Godavary. Kalinga is no dout the
south-east portion of Orissa, of which the capital was
Kalinganagara or modern Mukhalingam,
P.7, 1. 5. Pishtapuram is modern Pithapnr in the
Godavary district.
P.7, 1. 14. The Pallava King of Kanchi (modern
Conjeevaram) defeated by Pulikesin was Mahendravarman,
son of Simhavarman.
P.8, 1. 5ff. The date of the inscription is given
here. 3735 of the Era of the Great Battle and 556 of the
Saka Era. It corresponds to 634–35 of the Christian Era.
P.8, 1. 12. The reading in the inscription is
रविकीर्तिनेदम्,
P. 9, 1. 1. The missing letter may be .
P. 9, 1. 8. Vishamasiddhi is a title which is ex
plained as being due to his achieving "success (siddhi)
CHALUKYA CHARITAM 5 a against fortresses, difficult of access (vishama) on the plains, in the water, in the woods and on the hills." Read sthalajaluvana for sthatujanavana in the text. P.9, 1. 13. He is also called Kubja-Vishnuvardhana. The word Kubja means 'hump-backed; ' it also means curved sword, a scimitar.' Puki is not identified ; perhaps Pudi, seven miles south west of Chipurupalli. P. 9, 1. 14. Charupura is, perhaps, an older form of the name Chipurupalli. P. 9, I. 19. Dimili is in the Sarvasiddhi taluq, fourteen miles towards south-east from Chipurupalli. Kalavakonda is, perhaps, Konda-kirla of the present day. P. 9, 1. 19. The year denotes the regnal year of Vishnuvardhana 1. The Saka year is 555. The date of the grant is 7th July 632 A.D. P. 10, 1.7. Gudrahara is perhaps modern Gudivada in the Kistna district. • Gudivada is the name of two villages in the Vizagapatam district also. The language of this grant is rather full of inaccuracies and Mr. Fleet was not quite satisfied as to its authenticity. P. 10, 1. 8. This is the regnal year of Jayasimha I. The Saka year is 582(= 660-661 A.D.) P. 10, 1. 14. His name occurs also as Indraraja P. 11, 1. 1. This is the regnal year of Vishnuvardhana. The corresponding Saka year is 586. The date of the grant is 13th March 664 A.D.
6
NOTES
P 11, 1. 3. The names of the Brahmans and their
portions are specified in the grant.
P. 11, 1. 8. This is again the regnal year. The Saka
year is 589. The date of the grant is 17th February
668 A.D.
P. 11, 1. 18. This is the regnal year of the King
The corresponding Saka year is 614.
P. 13, 1. 8. The name of the Vishaya in which the
village was situated is illegible. The charter was issued
by Vijayaditya II, himself, but the Dutaka of the grant
was Prince Nripa-Rudra who was described as a brother
of Vijayaditya Il. but as a descendant of the Haihaya race.
He appears, therefore, to have been a half-brother, born
from a different wiſe, of Vishnuvardhana IV. who belonged
to the lineage of the Kalachuris of Tripura.
P. 13, 1. 14. Ratta is the Prakrit form of Rashtra in
the Sanskrit word, Rashtrakuta.
a
P. 14, 1. 1. The prefix Kali is explained in the
following line, by saying that he was "skilled in fighting
with all weapons (समस्तानामायुधानां कलौ कृती). But Fleet
says it is the Dravidian word Kuli and explains it as
courageous, valiant man; a hero.'
We are not quite sure
that this is a genuine grant. It seems to have been left
unfinished. The grant purports to be of Vishnuvardhana
but there is nothing in it to enable us to say whether it is
to be allotted to Vishnuvardhana IV. or V.
CHALUKYA CHARITAM P. 14, 1. 14. This Vijayaditya is known also as Gunaka-, Gunaga-, Gunaganka- or Gunake-Nalla-Vijayaditya. The prefix is explained in one grant by saying that he was a thorough Arithmetician (ankakuras sakshat). P. 14, 1. 15ff. "Challenged by the lord of the Rattas, he conquered the unequalled Gangas, cut off the head of Mangi in battle and frightened the firebrand Krishna and completely burnt his city." The killing of Mangi and the burning of the city of Krishna are also spoken of in another grant and a reference to the former event is also made in the grant of Vijayaditya III. himself, The Krishna in question must be the Rashtrakuta king, Krishna II. and the city must be Malkhed. P. 14, I. 20. The usurpation of the sovereignty by some Ratta chiefs for a period not defined, is specially to be noted. Bhima's opponent is specifically stated to be Krishnavallabha i.e. Krishna II. in another grant P. 15, 1. 8. A grant of Ammaraja states that he ruled over the Vengimandala together with the forests of Trikalinga or the three Kalingas. P. 15, 1. 15. Amma's name is also given as Amba. Rajamahendra is a title of Amma. The title suggests that Rajahmundry was first occupied by Eastern Chalukyas under Amma and was renamed after him, P. 15, 1. 16. Amma seems to have used his sword against some feudatory relatives who had joined the party of his natural adversaries and won over to himself the 8 NOTES subjects and the army of his father and his grandfather. This intimates that some of the members of his family had entered into an unsuccessful conspiracy with the Rashtrakutas to prevent his accession. P. 16, 1. 6. The family of Pattavardhani was very loyal during the days of Kubja-Vishnuvardhana. P. 16, 1. 19. Gonturu is perhaps the modern Guntur, the capital of the district of the same name. P. 17, 1. 9. Drujjuru is perhaps the present, Dzuzzuru, a village lying north of the Krishna, about 9 miles from the river and 19 miles north-west of Bezwada. P. 17, 1. 11. His name occurs also as Kollabiganda or Kollabiganda-Vijayaditya. One grant names him simply as Kollabiganda and Kollabigandabhaskara ; another states that he was Vijayaditya who was also named king Kollabiganda. P. 17, 1. 13 The other forms of the name are Taha, Talapa, Tala and Talapa. One grant states that he ruled over the Vengimandala and Trikalinga. P. 17, 1. 18. Malla is also called Yuddhamalla; cf. ततस्तालपराजस्य सूनुः सूनृतवाक्प्रभुः । युद्धमल्लधराधीशः सप्तवर्षाण्यपाद्भुवम् ॥ P. 19, 1. 13. Lokamahadevi is the Queen of Bhima II. P. 20, 1.1 ff. These lines give the date of the coronation of Amma II. The corresponding date of the Christian era is Friday, 5th December 945. P.21, 1. 19. The grant reads योऽस्मदम्बया for यस्तदम्बया CHALUKYA CHARITAM 9 P. 22, 1. 11. The head of the writing department of the treasury of gold. P. 22 11. 16, 18. Kama and Nayamamba are the parents of the Queen of Amma II. P. 23, 1. 4. Danarnaya is also styled as Dananripa. P. 23, 1. 6 f. This period has been assumed to have been a time of anarchy, with the suggestion that the anarchy may be fairly attributed to Chola invasions. The country may have been conquered and held for a time by the Cholas. The period is twice distinctly specified as 27 years. Nevertheless, as Dr. E. Hultzsch has pointed out, if the lengths of the immediately preceding and following reigns--two on either side-are stated correctly, this period must have extended to 30 years, This is determined by the actual dates of coronation recorded for Amma II and Rajaraja I. And this period can be limited to 27 years only if we assume that the coronation of Rajaraja I was deferred for three years after his actual accession, which does not appear very probable. P. 23, 1. 11. Satyaraja is another name of Saktivarman. P. 25, 1.7 ff. These lines give the date of coronation of Rajaraja I. The corresponding date according to the Christian Era is Thursday, 16th August 1022. P. 27, 1. 20 Perhaps the present village of the same name in the Godavery district where the grant was discovereu.
10 NOTES P. 29, 1. 9. Kulottunga-Chodadeya I was first anointed, like his ancestors, to the sovereignty of Vengi in 1053; but subsequently he assumed the Chola crown and had Vengi governed for him by Viceroys. He acquired the Chola crown by hostile invasion and conquest, not at any rate entirely by a failure of the Chola succession. He annexed the Chola kingdom in the very first year of his reign. It is clear from the poem, Vikramankadevacharita that Kulottunga Choladeva I was enabled to seize the Chola crown through internal disturbances in the Chola kingdom which culminated in the death of the last Chola king; cf. Note from the Vikramankadevacharita at the end. This record names three Viceroys of Vengi appointed by Kulottunga Choladeva I. P. 30, 1. 11 ff. Herein is found recorded the date of installation of Virachola. It corresponds to Thursday, 23rd August 1078 of the Christian Era. P. 33, 1. 11. This is of course the modern village oi Chellur. P. 34, 1. 2. This appears to be the modern Kalairoo, two miles south-west of Chellur. P. 34, 1. 3. This is the regnal year of Virachola. The corresponding year according to the Christian Era is 1098. P. 38, 1. 8. The date of the grant is given here. The corresponding date according to the Christian Era appears to be 23rd March 1132.
12 NOTES Chalukyas, it is doubtless to his time that we must refer the defeat of the people of Kalyana, and the defeat of the Kuntalas at Kudal-sangam-i.e. in both cases, of the Western Chalukyas. The most interesting, however, of the events between Vikramaditya VI and the Cholas occurred, according to the poem, after the death of Someswara I and the accession of Someswara II. Vikramaditya VI was then contemplating another campaign against the Cholas. The Chola king, feeling himself unable to resist, sent an ambassador asking for friendship and offering his daughter's hand in marriage to the Chalukya king. By an amicable arrangement, Vikramaditya VI retired to the Tungabhadra; and there the marriage was celebrated. Hardly was this done, when the Chola king died and the kingdom fell into a state of anarchy. Vikramaditya VI proceeded at once to Kanchi and subdued the rebels there; next he visited Gangakunda again and secured the Chola succession for his wife's brother; and then after a further stay of a month at Kanchi, he returned to the Tungabhadra. Within a few days, however, after his return, the news reached him that his brother-in-law had lost his life in a fresh rebellion and Rajiga, the lord of Vengi, had taken possession of the throne of Kanchi. Vikramaditya VI marched at once against Rajiga. The latter induced Vikramaditya's brother to combine with him and a battle was fought. But the victory rested 'with Vikramaditya VI and Rajiga fled and the former's brother taken prisoner. This los Vikramaditya's brother the throne ; and shortly afterwards, was 13 CHIALUKYA CHARITAM according to the poem, Vikramaditya VI allowed himself to be proclaimed ruler of the Dekkhan. in a passage Subsequently to this, the Cholas are mentioned again which says that after a variety of wars against unnamed enemies, Vikramaditya once more had to extinguish the Chola. Whether this refers to the Eastern Chalukyas, as holders of the Chola crown, or to an attempt on the part of the real Cholas to reassert themselves, is not apparent. This event is placed just before the entrance of Vikramaditya VI into his capital of Kalyana, Subsequently to this, the Cholas were attacked only once more; after a long time of peace, they again became proud and insolent; Vikramaditya's army marched on Kanchi and took the city; and Vikramaditya amused himself there for some time, before returning to his capital. Here the expression the Cholas to denote really "the Eastern Chalukyas." 1) seems
