·PREFACE It is a matter of great pleasure for us to present to the scholars of oriental literature and admirers of ancient Indian culture, this volume of Descriptive Catalogue of Sanskrit Manuscripts, preserved in the Sahitya Sansthan Research Library, Udaipur The Sahitya Sansthan, established in 1941 as a research department of Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, Udaipur, made special efforts Since its very inception to set up a manuscript section in its research Jibrary for the use of research scholars of ancient Indian history, culture and literature It has now a large collection of manuscripts in various languages as Sanskrit, Prāksta, Páli, Apabhramsa, Brij, Gujarati, Hindi and Rājasthāni This volume contains information regarding 1599 Sanskrit manuscripts selected from this collection Manuscripts included in this volume are dated between 14th and 19th centuries The earliest manuscript of this catalogue is Vişoubhakticandrodayaḥ written in Vikrama Samvat 1407 (1350 AD) There is one palm leaf manuscript written in Devanāgari script All other manuscr. ipts are written on thick country made paper Some manuscripts contain commentaries in Rõjasthāni, Gujarati, Brij and Hindi languages 1 Manuscripts compiled in the catalogue have been classified and subclassified subjectwise in the following order - Vedic literature Vedic Bhāşya, Upanisad 2 Law and Rituals Smrti, Dharmasastra, Karmakānd, (Homa, Sraddha Prayascitta, Pūjā and Vrata) Bhaktı, Māhātmr ya 3 Epics Rāmāyaşa Mahābhārai, Purāna, Gitā, Kávyas, Commentaries, Anthologies, Stotras. 4 Philosophy Mimātusa Vedānta, Yoga, Nyāya, Vasseşika, Jainism 5 Dramas 6 Stotras 7 Technical literature, Vyākaraga, Chandasõstra, Sihityasõstra, Jyotisa, kosa, Ayurveda ·8 Tantra Mantra Yantra lucrature 9 Miscellaneous This collection Cuntains some sery important works concerning Vedic literature and Tantra, VIZ Jayakhyasa mhitā, Sātvatsamhita, Pancırātretpats, Närdiyasanhia, Varkhānasasaṁhitā. Matangaparmesvara, Ajitágina, Sūkšmatantra, Karanõgama, Kāmikā. gama etc Such works have been mostly available in Southern India and scarcely available in other parts of the Country Their availability in Rajasthan has been on account of wide presalance of Santa and Pancară Ira sects in erstwhile Mewar region of Rajasthan There is a great possility of finding such works cren more from this region of resourceful efforts are made for it. 1 Manuscripts included in this catalogue belong mainly to the priate collections of the following who kindly presented them to the Sahitya San than Research Library for the use of scholars Sri Maharaj Shivadan Singhji or Shivaratı, Udaipur, Rajisthan 2 Sri Bhagawaulalji Bhatta, Udaipur, Rajasthan 3 Sri Rajvaidya Padmanabha Dholkıya, Rajhoi Gujarat.
