·FOREWORD We With grateful thanks to Sri C. Jinarājadāsa, President of the Theosophical Society for his generous contribution and to Dr. E. W. Adikaram for his scholarly and devoted labours, the Adyar Library issues this Descriptive Catalogue of the Pāli Manuscripts in the Library as the first step in . fulfilling the desire of Col. Olcott the President-Founder of the Theosophical Society and the Founder of the Adyar Library "to get a close and scholarly comparison made of the Pāli and Japanese collections and to publish the result as a contribution to Buddhistic literature from the Adyar Library.” Some attempts at catalouging the Buddhistic works treasured in the Library, were made in the past ; but they did not go far. In his Annual Report to the Convention of the Theosophical Society for 1892, Col. Olcott stated "the catalogue of the Pāli, Chinese, Buddhist and other works was to have been edited by Mr. Kamakami, a young Japanese priest now studying in Ceylon under Sumangala, the High Priest and copies of the same distributed to the delegates assembled here ; but as he has been otherwise occupied, the work has had to be postponed to the beginning of the next month when he is expected here." The next reference to this subject occurs in the Theosophist for May 1902, where it is stated "Until now the splendid collection of the Japanese Buddhist scriptures which I had brought back from Japan in 1889 had been lying in our shelves uncatalogued ·vi DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF PALI MSS. for want of expert expert help; but now Mr.' Kamakami, a young priest student of Kioto who has come to India to pursue his studies in Sanskrit, stopped with us for some time and very kindly set to work to prepare a list of the books." There is also a reference in the Theosophical Society Report of 1895 to the cataloguing work undertaken by Pandit R. Anantakrishna Sastri " with the indispensable assistance of Mr. C. Tukusawa, one of our Japanese members ; " but all these attempts did not take us far; and Colonel Olcott wrote in the Theosophist for june 1900 that "the real work is still to be done and great results ought to come out of it." While the previous attempts aimed at a simple cataloguing, we have now the satisfaction of publishing a Descriptive Catalogue prepared by an expert fully competent both by scholarship and training to accomplish the work in the masterly manner he has done. To conclude, as I began, I beg to tender, once again, our most grateful thanks to Dr. Adikaram for his scholarly and loving labours and to Sri C. Jinarājadāsa to whom the Library is indebted not only for the generous contribution already mentioned, but also for getting Dr. Adikaram to come here and work for the Library. It is also a matter of special satisfaction to us that we have been able to release this publication on the 16th December 1947; for on this day 72 years ago, the infant Jinarājadāsa was born into this world. We know that Sri Jinarājadāsa is decidedly against any observance of his birth-days or acceptance of any birth-day offerings; but we do hope that he will make an exception in regard to this birth-day offering from the Adyar Library and accept it as a thing pleasing in his sight. ·INTRODUCTION A COMPLETE set of the Texts and the Commentaries of the Pāli Tripitaka was donated to Colonel Olcott by a rich and pious Buddhist lady of Mātara, in Ceylon. Referring to this invaluable gift, the Colonel thus observes in his Old Diary Leaves : We breakfasted the next morning with Mrs. Cecilia Dias Illangakoon, a wealthy Buddhist lady of saintly piety, whose kindness towards me ceased only with her life some years later. It was she who supplied the money for the publication of the first editions, in Sinhalese and English, of my 'Buddhist Catechism,' and who had prepared, at a cost of nearly Rs. 3,000, the splendid set of the Tripitaka which adorns the Adyar Library. This set of manuscripts, inscribed on talipat leaves and comprising forty-seven volumes with 24,156 pages, formed the nucleus of the very valuable collection of the Buddhist Scriptures, not only in the Pāli language but also in Samskrit*, Japanese ™, Chinese and Tibetan. 212 2 3 | 26th June 1880. The gift of books from Japan is referred to thus in the Diary Leaves : Having made it widely known that I would thankfully accept gifts of books for the Adyar Library, kind friends and sympathizers daily brought such B ·DESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE OF PALI MSS, All books belonging to the Pāli Tripitaka and the Commentaries have been published, though they are not available in any uniform edition or in any one script. The Adyar Library possesses the following printed books in Pali: (1) Publications of the Pāli Text Society, London. Nearly all the texts of the Canon and a considerable portion of the Commentaries have been published by this Society. (2) Two sets of the Tripitaka in Siamese characters. The first set is from the edition published to commemorate the completion of the 25th year of the reign of the king of Siam". The second is from the edition of 1927. (3) Twenty-three volumes of the Commentaries, being publications (in Sinhalese Script) of the Simon Hewavitarane Bequest" Series, Colombo, Ceylon. gifts, until by the time of my departure from Japan I had an accumulation of some 1500 volumes. Included in these was the entire collection of the Tripitakas, over 300 volumes, formerly belonging to a deceased High Priest of the Jo-do sect. This was a very valuable present, as it enables one who knows both Pāli and Japanese to compare the texts of the Northern and Southern Canons. Already we have had this done to some extent by Japanese prieststudents who were guests at Adyar, but the real work is still to be done and great results ought to come out of it." Vide reference in the Diary Leaves, Vol. VI, 1935, p. 84: On the 27th * I received from Bangkok a case of books for Adyar Library containing the thirty-nine volumes of the Buddhist Tripitaka in Siamese character, which had been sent me by His Majesty the King of Siam through his relative, Prince Chandra Dat. This edition had been prepared by command of His Majesty as a memorial of the completion of the twenty-fifth year of his reign, and each volume was stamped with the royal arms and contained the king's portrait. As we had already complete collections of the Tripitaka in the Sinhalese and Japanese languages, this present made our collection very valuable." 1 27th October 1896, ·INTRODUCTION (4) Oldenberg's edition of the Vinaya Texts and Fausböll's edition of the Jātakatthakathā (in Roman Script). (5) A few books in Nāgari and in Burmese scripts. There is also a set of eleven palm leaf Manuscripts in Burmese characters, which have not yet been classified and catalogued. References to printed literature' are given at the end of the description of each manuscript to facilitate the work of the general reader or of the research student. A synopsis of the contents of books included in the Pāli Canon is also appended as a general introduction to the Catalogue. The Buddhist section of the Adyar Library, con sisting, as it does, of Pāli, Samskrit, Japanese, Chinese and Tibetan books, forms one of the best collections that may be found in any library in the world and very great indeed is the value of this splendid collection to the research student on Buddhism, particularly to one who desires to make a comparative study of the Hinayāna and the Mahāyāna forms of Buddhism. It was the desire of Colonel Olcott, who founded the library, to get a close and scholarly comparison made of the Pāli and Japanese collections, and to publish the result as a contribution to Buddhistic literature from the Adyar. not yet been fulfilled, but it is hoped that its fulfillment
will not be in the distant future and that the publication
of this Catalogue will contribute its share towards its
early achievement.

The two pages of a leaf have only one mark, placed on the first page. The first leaf of a book is marked with the latter ka, the second with kā etc. The 34 consonants of the Samskrit . alphabet, combining with the 14 vowels, the anusvāra and the visarga, make a total of 544 signs. A consonant with the anusvāra is written as kām, khām etc. Where the number of leaves in a book exceeds 544, as in the Samantapāsādikā and the Jätakatthakathā of this collection, the numbering recommences with ka but with the number 2 in front. Thus, for instance, 2 kū denotes 544 + 6 = 550 and 2 no denotes 544 + 77 = 621. A table giving full details for the deciphering of the number of a leaf is given below for ready reference.
