·PREFACE It gives me great pleasure to present to the horld of access the present edition of the Sarodijaki gerinar elå of Penerbitalantly after my edition of the Anekārthatılaka of Malifa published in 1lc er etc Series in 1947. The work of preparing a critical edition of the Säradīyākhyanamamāla was entrusted to me in the year 1990 by Dr. S.M. KATRE, Director of the Deccan College Research Institute, Poona, for being included in the Institute's Eeries called the 'Contributory Studies towards A Dictionary of Sanskrit on Historical Princi. ples' in general and the 'Sources of Indo-Aryan Lexicography' in particular. I started my work on the critical edition of the SN icon after it was cntrusted to me ty ficcLiing fu NELLONIs <iile work-four from the Government Manuscrip18 Library at the Itandarber Oriental Research Institute, Poona and one from tŁe Manuscripts Library of the Deccan College Restarch loatinute ird levegnaled at it at different intervals, submitted to the destilute o y JICEE-copy canly in January 1951. I am glad that the work is aow available in print without any delay. Before concluding the preface it is my pleasant duty to acknowledge with gratitude the help I received from several persons in bringing out this volume. In this connection my thanks are due to Dr. S.M. KATRE, for giving me an opportunity to edit for the second time a lexicographical work in the 'Sources of Indo-Aryan Lexicograpby' Series under. taken by the Institute. I am also thankful to Prof. P. ·INTRODUCTION The Saradıyakhyanāmamåla or Saradīyabhidhanamala, as it is sometimes called, 18 a glossary of synonymous words and is divided into three kändas, each of which is again sub divided into different Vargas Thus the first kända 13 divided into 1 devadarga, 2 vyomaparga and 3 dharavarga the second is divided into 1 anizavarga, 2 samyoga. diuarga, 3 samgitavarga and 1 pandstavarga The last kāndı 13 divided lato 1 brahmavarga, 2 rdjavarga 3 vaidyavarga, 4 fudraparga, and 5 samkirnacarga The whole work consists of about 465 stanzas. The Author The author of the work belonged to a Jaio sect, his name being Harsakirti He was a High Priest belonging to the Någapuriyatapagaccha branch of the Jain priests,' and was the pupil of Candrakirti, who was highly honoured by emperor Jehangir of Delhi, who ruled from AD 1945 to 1553 In his prabast to the Dhätupathatararigini, Harsakirti gives the following list of persons in his line who were honoured by royal personages - 1 Jayasekhara, honoured by Hammira (1301-1365 AD) 2 Vajrasena, honoured by Allāvadı (1295-1316 AD) 3 Ratnasekhara, honoured by Perojshah (1351-1388 AD) 4 Hamsakirti, honoured by Sikandara Shah, probably Sikandar Shah Lodi' (1488-1518) 5 Anandarāya, obtained the title Raya from Humayun (1530–15403 6 Candrakırtı, teacher of Harsakirti, who wrote the present work. Candrakirti was honoured by Shah Salem or Jehangır (1545- 1553) 7. Padmasundaragani, honoured by Akbar ( 1556-1605 ) 8 Pacca, honoured by a Hindu king named Mäladeva, who was the ruler of Yodhapura 1 e modern Jodhpur R G BHANDARKAR states that Mālađeva was a prince of the Rathod family which ruled at Jodhpur from A D 1532 to 1583." Harsakirti's Works and Date Harsakirti was a versatile writer and wrote on different subjects such as grammar, medicine, astrology and so on Most of his writing 1 Cf the colopbon to the author Dhitupashaçik, which reads as follows -- इति श्रीमन्नागपुरीयत्तपागच्छाधिप मघरक-श्रीहर्षकीर्तिसूरि- विरचितं स्वोपशपातुपाठविवरण सम्पूर्णम् । etc. 2 R. G BHANDARKAR Is inclined to identify Allied with Alleudlo Khuji. Sen Report for 1852-33 p. 43. 3. Ibid. Ibld, 44, 4 ·INTRODUCTION crists in the form of commentaries although the composition of origina treatises is also ascribed to him. The following are some of the works attributed to Harzakirti :- 1 Brhacchantistotratika; (composed in simvat 1655 )° : 2 Kalyana mandirastotrafikå ; (Ms. of samyat 1635 17: 3 Sinduraprakaranatika 4 Sarasvatadipika; 5 Sețanitkūrikävioarana (composed in samat 1669) 6 Dhatupathataraigini: 7 Dhätupādhabitarana : 8 Śaradiyakhyanāmamála: 9 Srutabodhalika ; 10 Yogacintamani ; 11 Vaidyakasārod dhūra ; 12 Jyoti hsdra': and 13 Jyotissároddhara'. Another work on lexicography viz. Saldanekārtha is also attributed to Harsakirti". In verse 3t on folia 856 of the India Ofice manuscript of this work it is stated that the glossary was composed by Harsakirti in sarisvat 1665 which corresponds to 1,0, 160). This verse reads as under: TITEETTIST तु १६६५ प तरमि मासि च । रामायां रूपंकीरयांदनिके सर्ता मते ॥ Scholars differ in their opinion concerning the date of Harsakirti. According to Weber" Harsakirti, the author of the Saradis akhyandmamala, lived towards 'the end of the sitteenth century'. BELVALKAR assigns the date 'circa 1550 A.D.' to Hirsikirti, probably relying on the fact that Harsakirti was pupil of Candrakirti who was honourei by Salimshah alias Jehangir who ruled from 1.0. 1545 to 1553. Judging, however, from the works ascribed to Harsatirti in the above list we are inclined to assign Harsakirti a period 'between A.D. 1575 to 1625' for his literary activity. From the list of works ascribed to Harsakīrti tre come to know that he composed the Brhacchantistotrattka in samvat 1655 i.e. A.D. 1597, and the Setanitkärikävivarana in samvat 1669 or A.D. 1613. 5. M.D. DESAr in his Jain Garjar Kanto' ( vol. 1, p 470 ) records the following information about Haryakirti, the pupil of Candrakinti and his works - "पार्थचन्द्रगरछना राजवन्द्रमी (जन्म स. १६०६; भाचार्य स. १६२९ स्व. १६६९)ना समकालोन रापरल मूरिशिष चन्दकोनिमारे हता. तेना शिष्ण आ हाडोतिरिए पोताना गुरुना नामनी सारस्वतव्याकरगनो टोका, नवमरगनो टोरा, सिन्दुरपकरटापा, पारदायाख्यनाममाला- फोग, धातुनरशिगी, योगाचेन्नामागे, वैद्यनारोदार, वैद्यरगारमग्रह, धृतवोपत्ति, तिजयपहुरा भने वृहत्यादिनार वृतिओ तेमन म. १६६५ मा अनियकारिका विवरण अने से. १६६८ मा कल्याणमन्दिरस्तरति आदि अनेक अन्धी सस्कृनमा रच्या छे." 6. ·INTRODUCTION 1X It 13 also stated that 1 nianuscript of Nyåj ar atara was copied for him in samvat 1635 1C AD 15.9 It will be seen from the foregoing remarks that Harsakirti must have already commenced his literary studies In A D 1579 when he got a manuscript of Nyāyavatara copied for his use It is also evident that his literary activity continued at least up to AD 1613 when he wrote his commentary on the Sefanitkārı kā I am, therefore, inclined to assign a period of about fifty years roughly from A D 1575 to AD 1625 to the literary activity of Hassakirti Mantiscript material The present edition of the Saradıyakhyanamamālā 18 based on five manuscripts, four from the Government manuscripts Library at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, designated as B, (= No 1409 of 1887-91), B2 ( = No 281 of 1873-74), B, ( = No 1382 of 1884 87 ) and B.(No 780 of 1875-76) The fifth manuscript designated as D, belongs to the Deccan College Mss Library This manuscript being very corrupt had to be rejected after the 75th stanza of the second Kanda All the manuscripts are written in Devanāgari characters and with the exception of B, are dated as follows -
