Kotah is a Hada State and occupies an important position in the Hadoti or Hadawati, the land of the Hadas. The Chauhans are one of the most illustrious of the 36 royal races of India, and among their 24 Shakhas (branches) the Hadas are the most important. They trace their descent from Raja Manakrai, the king of Ajmer and the first Chief in Rajputana, who in A. D. 685 tried to stem the Johammedan invasion Rao Dewa one of the descendants of this line of kings founded the toon of Bundi in 1349 on the Bando Pass ( Nal). The Kotah State may be said to have come into existence about the Vikram year 1676 when Jadho Singhji, che second son of Rao Ratan, of Bundi, secured from Emperor Jahangir the independence of the coun. try round and about the present city of Kotah, tchich he had conquered. This Royal favour toas shown in recognition of good services, the Prince rendered in the campaign which forced the Imperial Prince (aftertards the Emperor Shah Jahan ) to flee from Burhanpur. Bhim Singhji, the sixth miler of Kotah, who reigned from A, D 1708 to 1720 considerably extended the boundaries of the State and toas the first chief scho assumed the title of Maharao, on whom the dignity of the “ Punj Hazari" cas conferred by the Delhi Emperor and who also obtaincel the orange coloured banner and used it as the State standard. It was in the time of Maharao Umed Singhji I that his famous minister, Zalim Singh, made in the year 1. D. 18 17 on ichalf of Kotal, the first treaty in Rajputana with the British Government and succeciled in getting a supplementary article added to the suiil Prealy by which the administration of the State was vested in Zalim Singh (ond his hcirs and successors in perpetuity. When, however, Valrav Ram Singhji succeccled his uncle, Kishor Singhji, in A. D. 1828, disputes between him and his then minister, Jalan Singh, the grandson of Zalim Singh, (ruse, and the Government of India, sccing that arrangement of <a hrclitary minister was practically unworlable, decided in the ycar 1. D. 1838 to separate: 17 of the Kotah Districts to be formed into a new principality, Jhalawar, rond bestowed it on Raj Rang Madan Singhji his hcirs and successors. The present Maharao Sahih Bahadur His flighnes3 Lieutenant Colonel Sir Umcl Singhji I1, G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., G.B.E., who was born on the 15th September 1873, and succeeded to the Gaddi by adoption, in the ycar A.
