as it is old It is one of the six Angas of the Vedas While the other Angas go to explain the phonetics the formation of the words the melding of the words the prosody, and the procedure of sacrificial performance, the Jyautisha determines the time of performing the sacrifices It is found in two recensions the Rigvedriyautiska and the Tajurvedajj rutisha Though the contents of both the recensions are the same they differ in the number of the verses contained in them While the former con sists only of 36 verses, the latter is found to contain about 44 verses 1 bis difference in the pumber of verses 28 probably due to the addition of the liter annotatory verses to those of the text itself by the school of the Adhtirgu priests with whom it was in frequent use Regarding the date of the Jynutisha the late Snimik annu Pillai szys in bis Indian Ephemeris Vol I Part I Page 448 19 follows The location of the summer and winter solstices in the middle of Aslesha and the beginning of Dhunishtha referred to by Varalamıhıra both in hus Briliat ambiti and Panchasiddhantica is evi dently that recorded in the Vedangryuutısla It mry be sud that Varihambira s work stands 15 the centre of 7 period of astronomy wbose span is 3,000 years at the one end of which we stand nud at the other end the Vedanguyautisha It 19 known from inodern astronomny that the movement of the precession is one degree for every 72 yerrs Now the distance of the situation of the summer solstice at the beginning of Ardrı at the present time from that in the middle of Aslesbi at the time of the Vedanguj rutisha 14 1131-67 that is 45h degrees This gives at the rate of one degree in 72 itars 40,7 X 72=3482 verre Roughly speaking it may be said that the I edin, uji yutishi 11 observation must have been made 3 300 yeurs before AD 1916, that is, about BC 1400 Similarly if we buse the date of Varā bumihin on the location of the solstitial point recorded in las vorhs, it will be AD 392, for the difference between the situa tion of the summer solstice at the present tine (AD 1916) and thint observed and recorded by Varība mihirr in his time 19 22 degrees which at the rite of 72 years per degree gives 1,584 years that had elapsed from the time of Virīlamihin till 1916 In other words it would plrce Varihımılır m AD 300, wherens he actually lived and wrote about A D 350 Here the error of 250 ienrs is evidently due to the erroi made in observing the erict position of the sunımer solstice it the time of Varibumihira Allowing the sume proportion of eiror for prev 10119 epochs, the intiquity of the Vedang yantısı onservation, lecoided in the Jy autısbr, my also lrue to be reduced by im. that 13 i, in other words from 3 300 Terrs to 2792 years before not that is from BC 1400 to BO 850 Usmg the precessional factor of modern 10 tronomy one degree for 72 years Mr Tilak in his Orion ind Professor Jacobi in an article first pub lished in German scientific journal and reproducer in tlie Indnn Antiqurry for 1894 (Page 158), simultaneously declared thnt the Vedāvgujj autisht preceded Varāhumiluris time by 1 896 years, and tlı at there is a still errlier period when correct stronomic observations had been made in India mu tut was when the vernal equinor was, 12 Mrigasira Nakshatra longitude 520 20 instead of in Asvini 0 longitude 1$ in Varāhamılıra's tune ind that that epoch must linse preceded Varahi inihar's own epoch by 53} x 72=160 x 24=3,810 Jean that is, that the observation was made, and the ledu in whiclt it is belitied to be alluded to 1128 compo-cd about BC Jairs befort now that 1 5,100 I lois parul al o min hule to be { 1300 111 cut down by is, 5 400 vcers bemg reduced to the tune of 900 or 1,000 years, and the Vedic untiquity brought down from BC 3500 to the region of BC 2500 The latter date more nearly approxi mates what we might call the philologists Vedic period (according to Mar Muller, Weber, Macdon nells Ind Lit, 1909, Page 11 &c), as distinguished from the astronome s Vedic period' Thus is 2 fair estimate of the date of the Vedang Jyautisbi and there is no reason wliy it should not be accepted It is partly to this buigh antiquity and partly to the appearance on the srene of what are called the Siddhantas that we owe much of the obscurity of the verses of the Vedangajyuutisha In big notes ou this work the late Dr Thibaut has clearly expluned verses •1 to 10, 18, 21, 24, 28 and 30 to 40, leaving the rest as obscure These verses would have reinamed obscue aud unexplained for ever if we have not received light from an unexpected quiter I mean the Jaina astro nomical works, such as the Suryaprigoaptı and the Jyotishkaranda in which the ystem of the Vedang - jyautisliv is almost exactly reproduced Tue very words of the eleventh verse which has balled the attempts of scholars at its mterpretation are found translated in Prakrit in the Suiyzpragnaptı It is very curious to find that while the Brahmans took to the Sıddbintas leiving the rough method of calculation of the Vedanga Jyautishi in spite of the persistent attachment to whatever is incient, the Jainas Slould preserve the Sacri ficiul calendır in spite of their revolt against the Vedic Hacıhces Probably the calendar was used not merely for sacrificial pm poses, but also for the observance of othier religious customs performed on New Moon and Full Moon Drys, wd on the days of solstices and equinoxes Tlie reason why preference was given to the Siddhantas over the Vedangajy uutisha liowever sacred the latter might have been in the view of the priests is evidently tle more accurate method of determining the Tythus ind tle Naksbatras taught in the Siddhantas turn in the Vedāngajyautisha The modern orthodox astronomers IV of Ivdii wlio blindly cling to tlı Sudbintas inay tike a lesson from t1114 and reform their cilendir in the light of modern scientific astronomy In 1119 Motes on Hlindu Astronomy, Dr J Burgess srys that "the figures (of the Vedangı) sive for the moon s sidereal resolution 27 3191 33 and for the syno dical montli 20 516129 dts, thirt for every 19 CITA the synodical months according to the Vedanyys autishi inust be in defect by 3 399 days, whule tlic uidereul months would be in defect bv 2093 days and the color years themaclves would be in excess bo 14 081 days, and thrt the system of the Vedungryzutishız is a primitive and rough method of observation ** Regarding the serviceableness of the Vedanga jj rutista in spite of the defective metliod of calculation trught in it, the late Swamihimu Pillu says (luiiim Ephemeris, Page 447) as follows "If to be on the safe side we suppose the Vedangajyautisha was current even 600 years before the Christian er, how did it linppen that the primi tive and rough inethod adverted to by Dr Burgess did not land its followers in confusion and disaster? Sice, as le points out, after 19 years, Tithis under the Vedaugajyautisha must occur 35 days late, it must follow that after 19 yeirs people would either have kept Nes Noon Du when 4 moon 3 days old wus shining in the shy or live given up the Vedangajvautiskı altogether Aguin it is probably unheard of that any people, however primitire who follow the luuir calendar, kould be so regardless of lunar plt ises as to keep Full Moou when the moon was in the fourth day of her wanmg In handling such z system as the Vedungnyautiska, we must first of all 2esume as an 1xiom, that 110 material deviation from the ctunl recurrence of Tıthus and Nakshatrs 178 contemplated under at Otherwise tle whole scheme was bound to collapse in 20 years The eclieme was intended to be worked in such a way that once in 5 yerrs Maglia Sukla 1 should coincide with moop in Dhanisliba Nikolatra and sun in Dhanuslitha Nnksbatra at the time of Uttırayına Such schemes in substance are found all over the world A scheme of this description is called a tied lunur calendar, that is, a Lugar calendar s0 constructed that it may periodically fall into live with the solar jerr The Jews and the Greeks, among incient nations of whose calendars we have precise information, bad ench of them a tied luurr calendaı, but without the special Indian detail of Nakshatras In all such calendars the essential thing is that the recurrence of lupir Tıthis, as we call them in India or lunar plases as they are called in Greek, should correspond to actual fict, and in India under the Vedang yutish as well as under the later Suryasiddbanta, which we now observe there is another tie, that of the Nakshatray wlose actunl recurrence also the calendar should futhfully represent Such a cilendır is subject to a very rendy and natural test, because the scheme of Tithis can be tested every fortnight by com parison with the full moon and the new moon there may be 2 error of 2 single duy, the first phasis or upperrince of the moon after she lins become new being for instruce declared by the calendar z duy too late or a day too errly, but the error would never be permitted to exceed 1 s ngle duy, and would be rectified by dropping 2 Tithi m the count, which we now call ? Ksbiya Tithi, 01 by adding day to the lunar month making it consist of 30 iustend of 29 Tiths The udvitas of the Indian Nakshatra system is that it provides 4 safeguard and a remedy tgunst m error of even a single day which miglit occur, as just shown, under 1 pure Tithi sten The moon covers uliole Nikslintri sprce of 135 degrees in the hiervens in the course of 1 single day, and if the calendar flions her to be in a Nakshatr different froin tint whicl slic ictu uls occupies we do not want to wut until Nes Vloon or until Full Moon to discover the error, zud could rectify it at once by Vit permitted for the sake of the 1,830 days what may be uscertained by studying the actual decursus actually took place under the Vedangnyautisha For facilitating such a study he has appended to Nakshatra space m 13 528013 days, according to modern European astronomy, and in 13 528102 days according to the second Suryasiddhanta, und in 13 55, 1ccording to the Ved ingrıyıutisha Although we cannot visibly see the sun occupymg a prrticular Nakshatra space by day, we know fronı the Nakshtri coming to the zenith at midnight that the sun must their be in Nakshatrı 180 degrees removed from the zenith Nakshatrı, so that if ye bave previously mapped out the ecliptic into 27 Nakshatra spaces (whether equal or tinequal does not matter for our present purpose) we should know from the zenith Nihshatra at midnight wiat Nakshatra the sun was in at that moment, and since the Nakshatra space or any part of it can occupy the zenith for only 13' dive it follows that an error in the calendar regardmg the sun s position among the Nakshatras can be detected after 131 days in any case after 27 days or after the sun bas done two Nakshatra spices Regarding the tied lunar year the same learne) scholar says as follows The lunar year is tied to the solar year, but it is tied loosely, that is in such a way that the lunur year may begin from 1 to 29 days before the solar year, but it must begm before the solar jear and within one month before the commencement of the solar year Similarly although the Vedanga jyutisha słys that 5 years should consist of 1,830 days or 62 synodical months, or 61 sideral months, it did not mean that any extensive deviations from the actual solar and lular phenomena should be of solar and lunar phenomena under such a system Ha a bug sang of you tibles And B which are reproduced lierem THE VEDANG UYUTISHI (411VDIR-TIBILI AYU UY FOR 30 YFAKS AIPUFD TO THE YFIRJ ID 1899-11) 1927 Garga's Scheme of the Calendar (Dikshit). In such a case ill tlit 199 necessary to rectify the calendar 17 to drop the Idbiha month liz, the 62nd month and make the month of Vaglı begin at once, e, without being preceded by 2 Idhikz month This procedure would follow automaticalls from the very notion of an Adhiha inontlı What is indicated in the Velaogy jutrska is only a first outline of the general calendar lle must remember that at the time writing wis not known and the rules had to be commufted entirely to memory As usurl such rules were brief apophthegmatic, lasing down principles mother than formule It has not lutherto been suspected that the rule about iusertig an Adhikz month twice in the course of 5 years must bwe been subject to exceptious A Iittle reflection will show however, that 12 Adhika month bad to be inserted only when necessari It 19 clearli laid down in huutikas Irtbysestra turtagunet 1 month of 30 cn il days the moon lo es day and the Xil גוצ sun gais : lay, and that when the difference between the sups and the moon s movements amounts to a month au Adhikr month is added The deviation at any moment from the standard Iuga could be measured by the sun s Nakshatra, no desiation except of a trivial nature being permitted in regard to the inoon s Tithi and the moon Nakshatra If he suns Nakshatrı was 295 diss short of Dhanishtha, then an Adhika month was added and the same consideration would lead to the converse rule (though this is not expressly stated) that if the sun had rerched Dhanishthadı 29% days before Nagba Sukla 1 tlie lunar calendar should lose an Adhika inonth Examples are given above of different periods after which a rectification of the Vedangajjautisha calendır might have been effected by dropping or adding in Adbika month The shortest period within which the error could hive been rectified was 30 years or 6 Yugas If an Adhika month (synodıcal as well 's sidereal) 119 dropped at the end of 30 years the above table shows that as the immediate result the length of the synodical month 19 well of sdorca) month would have been considerably improved I be length of the solar year would have become 365 2 days insterd of 366 2 days By continuing the correction for 5 cycles of 30 years and tabulating the progress after two more ordinary Yugas of 5 years each We reaclı a surprising result in excligmos of 160 jerrs yielding an almost perfect sy nodicul month an almost perfect siderer! month, and an almost perfect sidereal yer The mein periods of the Vedangyyautisha thus adjusted, are so perfect that they could hue been observed for 10 000 years without the year going wiong by a single day Compared with this exclignos of 260 years, those for S15 ind 540 years are less interesting, but they offer alternative adjustments of the Vedrngajyautisha calendar, and they are exlubited for the purpose of showing that whether the makers of an almanac under 222 Kit the Vedangujutisin bird, or id not, a ales of in ercligmos, they would have been led, by the very notion of an Adhka month, to drop 10 Adliha month once m 30 or once in 35 years, and restore it again when necessary All the cycles converge to about 1,000 years by Varliamkira's time, when the sun at UttarimW14 This 14 sliort of 7 Dhanishthz by about 22 days exacth the diference between B and C under column 4 for 1,000 year For, 10Y223 - 22 dass The difference for 5 periods (1,575 years) under column 5 between B and C would be UX435=2175 days The differeuce under column 6 for 3 periods of 540 ears each (1,620 years) rould be 12 06 days between lunır and tropical Jcars (A und B) and 1071 days between lunir ind aderenzl year ( Aind C) Total 22 77 days But under 1 540 years eachgmos, 14 descloped 111 column 6, the differeuce due to precession or to smere 1 error would be about the sune (1 e, some 7 days) for taythnog less thai uullennium and the falling buch of the tropical, with reference to the sidere?? or Nakshatri Jerr, may not have been perceived so eirls as under an excligmos of 100 years Tlus long quotation from the Indian Lphemers of the late Summih inpu Pillai an uuthority on Indian astronoms and its achiene of aimannc, clerris allows that in forming his opinion on the calendar system of the Vedungajjautıalı, the late Dr Burgess had not tahen into consideratiou the two ties' with much the lur er jerr 13 bound to the solar ear and the lakshatra jer, and tliat the aimanıc preprred 111 accordance with the rules lud down in the Jynutıbı seried the prctical purpose for which it 118 devised It was however necessary for the priestly zatronomers of Vedic Indn to test the accurcy of the calendar by periodical obsert? tions and adjustments bi omitting 2 day or two non and then That they did tbs, is clerrly stated in the < 12th and other verses in the text itself But it was a tedious labour which they ivoided by adopting the system of the Siddhanthas later The system of the alminac described in the Vedingynutisha is undoubtedly pre Greecian and cannot be regarded to have been current later than the beginning of the Christian Ert when Greek astronomy is believed to have been introduced into India In the introduction to buis translation of Varahamihiris Panchasıddbāntikā (Page 55), Tbibaut azys is follows The late Professor Whitney (Page 170, Sürya siddhantha) has expressed the opinion that the absence from the Hindu system of any of the improvements introduced into Greek astronomy by Ptolemy seems to favour the conclusion that the original transmission of astronomical knowledge into India took place before Ptolemy According to Encyclopædia Britannica, Vol 20 Page 87, Ptolemy s first observation was in 151 A D It follows therefore that the improvement in the system of the Hindu calendrar after the Greek model came into use in India about the beginning of the Christian Lra and that the improved calendar was substituted for that of the Vedangajyuutisha Thus thrown into disuse the Jynutisha seems to have become merely a sacred piece of recitation like the Vedas ud obscure like them It is quite tur il that a work of such antiquity should bafile the attempts of scholars to correctly interpret it So far back as 1877 Dr Thibaut made some contribution to the explanation of the Jyautisha to the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal and correctly expluned almost all the verses with the exception of verses 11, 13 17, 1923, 25 27, 2 und 41 The explanations and inteipretations offered by the late Sanhir Balakrishn: Dikshit, Vir Burhis patya, Mahamahopadhyava Sudhakari Dvivedi, and Bula Gangadhara Tılalı to elucidate these obscure verses are not merely unsatisfactory, but contrary to what the anthor of the work meant to convey The astronomical propositious and rules for the preparation of w alnızc SUZ 17 of religious mtes rod festivals contined in the Süryapragnapti, the Jy uutishiharınds, and the Kalalohi prakāśa of the Juin is pre quite similar to those truglit in the Vedangajjautisht and throw a flood of light on the obscure passages of the Jynutisha Tlie reiding of the text adopted in thus work is the same is that of the text edited by Dr Tlubiut with the esception of a Witli 7 slight modification in the reading of verse 13 view to arrive at Parvi raśı exactly similar to that proposed and explained by Dr Tubrut and also expounded in the Jyotishinnda, the word "Rūpi samyutan was substituted for Chapya samvutam in Terse 13 of the text How thus modihention enables us to use at the Part 1 rasi intended by the yuthor and to explain the tests of the Paria rasi given in the subsequent verses is made cleu both in the Inglish translation and the Sunshrit commentary of the tert I thunk it unnecessary, therefore, for me to offer an apology for making even such a solitary change in the reading of a verse in the test For, without that change in the lerdiug of the rerse the Pars i rīsı figure it wbuch is exactly similar to that stated in the Jyotishhanndz cannot be arrived at With this exception, the rending of the text is as found in Dr Thibaut s edition and the obscure verses are explainel on the analogy of the problems and formuln contained in the Jaina astronomical works, for the supply of which I am highly indebted to Mr Kunmruji Anandall, President of the Jagrunthapracharaha sabhi i Bhuva nagar In conclusion, it is my pleasint duty to acknowledge with grateful thanks the generous help wluch the Gor erument of I113 Higliness the Maharaja of Mysore have gren me to get the work printed at the Government Brunch Press at Mysore My thanks are also due to Mr J N Krishni Iyenyır, MA, the Librarian, and to Mr S Numsimbachar and Vr Srimu asagopalichar, Pandits, of the Government Oriental Library in Mysore for going through the proofs lam n o lughly thankful

The Bhamsas un certain Parias are nine or a case with the other Paivas wloce number is twelve or a multiple of twelve The 12th, 24th, 36th, 48th, 60th, 72nd, 84th, 96th, 108th, and 120th new moou Parvas, base S or multiples of 8 as their Blámšas. But in the case of Parrdo le-s than twelve or less than a multiple of twelve, the Bhamsas are not in all cascs 11or a multiple of 11 These exceptional cases are referred to in the next verse It is, however, to be noted that in the 15th and the 16th verses we are only told to test the Bhāmşas in the series of Parvas calculated in accordance with the rule luid clown in verse 13 That is all. We are taught no new formulae or «stronomical problem in those two verses In the 16th verse some exceptions to the statement mide in verse 16 are given. 15. It has already been stated that the Parva-rāśi formula is given mamly for the purpose of ascertaining the Parva-days on which, the Bhamsa being less than 31 Amc7q, sacrifices are performed; and in the case of those Paira-daye on which the Bhām as are more than 31 Amsas, sacuifices are begun on the 14th day and finished on the first day of the next Park. Hence it was of great importance for the priestly class to know before hand certain characteristics of Parvas with or without au increment of day-Amsas The above verse gives us an idea of the characteristic of those Parvas which have all inciement of day-Amsas It says that those Parvas in bich Bhamsa appears as nine has an incienient of day-Ameas The Rig-Jyautisha serse adds by' saying that from the 15tlı full moon Parka or the 29th Parvat from the commencement of the Yuga onwards 9 appears as Bbānisa in Parvas whose number 18 a multiple of 19 13 multiple of 1.21€, in those Pancas ulose number 18 less than 12 01 multiple of 1, the Blamśas art 7 or a multiple of 7 in uneven Parvas, thuat 18, full moon Parvas, an all lition of darly Amsas to the Nal shatras or days equiralent to Nakshatras is made and tb it in the Uni Piivis 7 insted of 11 ppears 15 Blnmsi In the 29th Parvi the Blımsnis (29 X which is equal to 7Eich is equal to 17 Nak shatris or Nakshatra days and în Pirtas 19, 21, 29, 42, 50, 58, 71, 79, 87 100, 108, ind 110 the chi ricteristic number 9 ppeus 15 Blamsı and an addition of Azmi day parts in the form of bulf 1 any or ? complete dny is made over and abose that of those Parvis wluch piecede tl ein For ev?mple the 57th 16 14 33 and 34 in thu 58th 45 in 78th and 46 in 7911 50 m 86th und Jl in 87th 62 in 107th and 63 in 1088, 67 in 115th wd 68 in 1l6th Thus chricterstic is referred to is now l9 in verne 27 the shall see In Parr 32 the ad lition is alt du more then in 21 lihense Pann 50 la 1 bullide more than Puig 29 similarly Parva 71 19 h vf z dar more than Pirv: 70 likewise Part 100 las nf 1 day more than Para 99 In Ona Pikslins where 7 appears as the isual e ricte. nstic Bhamsa, there are additions of a quarter or half of a dui inore than in the piecuiling Pirins what is called diaja of 1)111 and not. In the Parins with the Nakshatras mentioned in the Jānālli-zti se, one should know that the Parlatime coincides with the Parra Ramsas ant termiof the next Parra. It is not, however, meant that 19 kalūs are equal to S Amsas For the moon requires C03 plus 7 or 010 halās to pass through a Nakshatra Hence to pass through 8 Amsas she requires 8 x 34 sluch 19 equal to 39 halās and it parts of a knlā Or to pase though 1 Ausa she requires 11 or 4 kalas and 8 parts of a kalā which rendered in decimals 14 equal to 4 91 kalās Not perceiving this, Mahamabop adlıyaya Sudhakara Dvivedi interpreted the word " Aslitaka' 1) the above verse to mean four and made 19 kalās cqual to 4 Amsas Clearly it is a wrong inter pretation and a wrong calculation In the second half of verse 19, we are asked to ascertain if there is a possibility of a Yoya of the sun and the moon (yukta-sambhave), by the application of the number 72 Yoga is the name applied to the joint space which would be travelled by the sun and the moon in a given period of time, supposing that these bodies travelled in opposite directions instead of, as they actually do, in the same direction In the supposed case the sun and the moon together would do the 360 degrees of the ecliptic in 25 42 days As will be seen, there is a clear reference to Yoga in this work. however, told how many Yogas they counted and how they were named The Jyotisbkaranda of the Jainas mentious only one Yoga and calls it Vyatipäta It is probable that the Vedangajyautisha also counted only one Yoga and that its name was Vyatipit: This is referred to in the half verse under consideration and the 3 We are not 18 is a multiple of 12) 19 halas should be insertei, in formula of ascertainıug the Yogt ind its Nakstra is The verse 9335 given in verse 26 In the cases of Ünn Pakshas (that is, full moon Pakshas) one should apply the number 72 if there is possibility of a logi combination of the sun and the moop For example, let us the tlie 23rd Prkslin Here the Bhamsa of the moon is 23 x7, which is equil to This is equal to 13 Nakshatras and" of 1 Nakshatra from the preceding Pum Since the moon in hes 6 revolutions in 124 Parvas, tod the sun 5 rerolutions 11 the same time they two to,etier mahe 72 resolutions Ilence 72 is the inder number pointing to a lor of th sun and the moon In the 23rd Porta under consider tion the moon s Bhamsı 13 67 if the sun s Bhains 1 the same 23rd Purvis 5 then the total Bhamas of thi two bodies would be 72 In other words the sum c their longitudes in Bhimas 1 72 the index number Now in 1 Tith the moon moves through 603 Kıslıthas and the sun 45 hashtha. This is arrived at 18 follows In a Yugof 1860 T this tle moon goes through (27x67) Hence in one Tuthi she goes through (27X67)/1860, which is equal to (9 x 67)/620 Similarly the sun goes tlırough (5X27)/1860 which 14 equal to 40/620 lu other words while the moon passes through 603 of the 620 pirts of a Nakshatra the sun goes through 45 of the sume 620 parts A Nakshatrı is divided into 124 parts called Amsis and ench one hundred and twenty fourth part is further subdivided into 5 parts or the whole Nikslintra is divided into 620 pirts called hashthus Since 5 hashthus nre neurly equil to 31 Amsı, 45 hashthys preved through by the suu in Tithi are equal to 9 Ainsis In a lith the moon gou through 003 haslıthing or 67 Amśns This measurement is made use of in ver o 20 where tl e logr of the sur and the moon is defined and the Nakshatrn of the log is ascertained 22 per litt Nahshatra of a Paria are included, the Tithilalas at the rate of 7 lalas [7+(9 or 10))=16 or 17 I alas Hence in the remainder obtained after deducting the l'rtlı halos (that 18, the 7 lalas requued to conzert the Tzthis into drys), one should hnow the halas necessary to arrize at the Nakshatra of a Tatlız 21 Nakshatra Thus taking one Saru day and 7 halas of the next dły as the duration of the moon s movement through a Naksliatrı it is easy to find out the Nuh shatrn of each Tithi in a Parin In applying the formula s11en 1 verse 20, the Tith itself may be multiplied by 11 and the quotient obtained by multiplying the hilas of the Prita bliamsa by 11 and by dividing the product by 610 added to the number of Titlus first obtained The sum is the number of the Nakshatra of the Parva in question counted from the Nakshatra of the previous Parva Usually the 15th Nakshatra from the Nakalıntre of the preceding Purva is the Nal slıntra of the Parva in question The product obtained by multiplying the Titlu by 11 with the addition of the quotient obtuned by dividing by 610 the product of kalas of the Parsa blamsı multiplicd by 11 is almost equal to 16 If the number of Pirtns whose Nakshatra is desired to be known is more than one, then the sum of the Tithis at the rate of 15 Tıtlus per Parvu should be multiplied by 11, the sum of the halus at the rate of 228 kalus per Pırır bhamsa should also be multiplied by 11 and divided by 610 The quotient thus obtimed is to be added to the number of Tithis already got The resulting sum 18 divided by the number of elap ed Puns The quotient gives the Mal sbntra of the Paryż in ques tion Tor example the Nok of the 6th Parya 13 (4X11) lus (228X1X11)-610 18 00 This divided by 4 gives 15 llence the Nak of the 5th Pars 7 is the 15th front thint of the preceding Parv? It is known that the Tıthis are lunır, and the dry s solar in verse 22 we are told of the way in vluch the sun may be connected with the Tithi 21 The fire Vislusas of the Dihshunay17 23 I'rom the past Purva parts deduct double the number of days equivalent to a Trthi The sun will be found to have Tits stand on the Paria tithr on the parts of that Mandala or circle whurch 13 equivalent to the remaining Trthe days 22 If the number of the Vrsluva or equinoctial day 28 miultrplied by two and one is deducted from the product and again multiplied by six the product thus arriveil at denotes the number of thic Paksha in which the desired Visiuva occurs, the number of the Here the word Mandala means day circle In a Yuga the sun makes 1,830 day circles, the moon 1,768 and the Nakshatris 1 809 (vrde verse 29) According to the quotation from the Jyotisbkranda made in the Sanskrit commentary, the sun makes in one Parva 16 cicles, and the moon 14 :, circles It is known that iu 1,830 days of Yuga the moon makes 1 860 litlus Hence one Tithi is equivalent to fin days equal to 14 days equal to (1 T1+lıı minus 127) days equal to (124 minus 2 T1 )/124 dijs Hence 1 Purva or 15.Tıthis are equal to 15 (124--3)/124 equal to 14 ti Nor is the sun moves through 16 circles in z Parva, he moves in 14 days x ': equal to 176 equal to 15 * circle That is, he will be in the 40th division of the 62 divisions of the day circle when the 16th lathi of the Parva 18 current (For other details see the Sinskrit commentary) 22 The hilloh prikası says (Pages 74 78) 99 fol lows The day of which tle day time and the night-tune are equal to each other, each being metsured by 16 AIuliārtas, is called the Vishua-day Vialus a dry i ench Avana in 1 lug there are ten Isshuis duis arc on weten daze and in the month of hurtika, Tlie fite of the Uttarayana fall on even of Vadhan (Vushhr) thurd lunir dry sath Rolıını after six Part 14 lase There 19 one daya in the month The fint lura falls on the 21 Paksha, divided by tho, is said to lenote the number of the Tithe on which the Vishura falls. 23. The product, which is obtained when the number elapsed; the second on the niuth with Dbanishtlā after the lapse of 18 lartas, the third on the full moon day with Svātı after 30 Parvas; the fourth on the oth (13th?) with Punarvasu after 43 Parvas; the fifth on the 12th day with Uttarābhādrapada after 55 Parvas; the sixth on the third day with Anuradhā after 68 Parvas; the the seventh on the ninth with Magiíă after 80 Panas; eighth on the 15th with Asvinı after 92 Parvas; the pinth on the 6th (13th ? ) with Uttarāsbadha nfter 103 Parvas, the tenth on the 12th Uttaraphalguni after 117 Parvas To determine the 1st Vishuva- (1) 1x2 minus 1 is equal to 1. 1x is equal to 6. Hence 6 is the pumber of Parras after which it occurs in the 7th Parva of 6 is 3 which is the number of the Tithi on which it falls. (2) Sımlarly to determine the 4th Vishuva- 4x2 minus 1 is 7; 7X6 13 42.. .(1). of 42 is 21 ...(2). There is another rule-which is to be applied to such Cases : If the number denoting half of the number of Parvas is greater than 15, then divide it by 15; add thic quotient to the number denoting Partas; then the sum thus arrived at is the real number of Parvas; the semainder denotes the Tithi of the Vishuva. Accordingly as 21 is greater than 15, it is divided by 15; the quotient is 1 and the remainder is 6; the quotient is added to 42; it becomes 43. Hence 43 is the number of Parvas that have clapsed. The Titlii of the 4th Vishuva is the 6th In ierse 24 the author gives us the measue of a Nīdikā, one-skatieth part of a day. 23. As already pointed out, the ancients liad a Ghatikuvessel measuring 61/4 Prasthas of water and having a Visluula falls But it is to be remembered thint such long gress of the sun occur only in the north west corner of 25 of Vishuvn day is multiplied by two and one is dle licteil from the product, and uhen the result 23 again multiplied by six, denotes the number of the Parla in which it occurs, and half of that number is the number of the Tith on which the desired The third day, the runth ilny, the full moon iny, then the thirteenth day, and then the sixth day are the successive days of Vrshura, and the tenth Vishuva in a Yuga falls on the 12th slay (Rig Jyautisha) A zessel in which 60 Palas of water can be hept is called an Adhala from Adhula the measure of a Drona should be enferred as already pointed out if hole in its bottom \Vhen floated upon witer, it sink making 1 sound soon after it was filled with water entering into it through the hole at its bottom and indicated the lapse of one Nadıka or Ghitiha This 19 what is referred to in the above verse The table of Dronn and other cubic measures is as follows 1 Kudava is equal to 3. Palas 4 Kud 1129 rre equal to a Pristha or 124 Palng 4 Pristhas are equal to an Adhaka or 50 Palna 4 Adhah are equal to a Drona or 200 Palas Hence one Adhaka minus 3 Kuda vas is equal to 200 minus 9: Palas that is 190 Palis or divided by 124, it is equal to 1625X2/(8X45) Prosthus or 61/4 Prnsthng which 19 equal to one Nadıka 12 Nadıkas are equal to 12X61/4 Prosthrs or 183 Prasth us We buve been told that the rate of increase of the day during the Dakshinayına is one Prastha per diy and that the total of the increase of the day during the 183 dnys of the southern progress of the sun 1 183 Prasthas or 12 Nadthas or 6 Muhurtig crease is also referred to in the astronomical works of the Jainas India, somewhere about the north of Kanlımir in series Hence The same in Y 20 from a Drona three Andaras are deducted, it unll be the measure of a Nadila 24 Having multiplied by 11 the pumber of Parlas that has sincc elaj sed and hauing multiplieit by 9 the number of Trthes that has since clapsel, one las to divide the sum of the rollucts bij the number of Panas in a Yuga, the qruotient tſus obtained rith the number of Parlas elapsed guies the sun's Nalshatra in order froin the commencement of the Inga 25, 1 25 we tre given a formula to find out the Nakshatrı 24. of the sun on any given day The formula is thus arrived in Yugl the sun moves through 5 times 27 or 135 Mahshatras, and there are in a lugz 124 Partas Now if in 124 Pinas the sun goes through 135 Naks, then in a given number of Parras he goes through 14X given Parya, that is, Part 3 plus 14 Parvas Agup if in the 15 Tithuis of a Parva tlo sun goes through it! Naks, then inn guven number of Tıthis he goes through (135 T2 )/16X124, that is T8 T. Combining these two results, we have P plus (11 P plus 9 Tı)/124 Applying this formul, the suns Nakshatra in the first Parv of a Iugr is thus arrived at 1 plus (11 7148 9 11/124 which is equal to It means tunt the sun is in the second Nakshatrı from Dhanishtha, that is, Purvabhadri Tlus is correct because the first Parva occurs 15 days after the coin inenceinent of the Tuga As the sun takes 135 days to move tlırough a Nakshatra de los pissed through Satabhislaj in the 13: drys of the Paria and has been in the Purvabladrpdr for 1 days Let us take the 5th. Nakshatrı is given in verse 39 as 13% days It may also be found thus The sun pasea 5 times through all the 27 Naks in a Yuga of 1,830 days So le passes through one Nak in 1830/(5 x 27) days, which is equal to 138 days Here the puts of one Nakshatra ure its 124 Amsrs or its 620 parts called Kashthas These Amsis or pirts he passed through in 13.5 days Here the Naksbatrı parts are divided by pine The remainder is 5/9 Ve are asked to multiply this reminder by 2 and take the numerator 10 as the number of Amsrs which the sun passes through per day It has already keen pointed out in the notes on verse 19 that while the moon moves through 603 of 620 Kashthas per Tithi the sun gocs through 45 of the 620 Kasbthas per Tithi 45 Kashthas are equal to 9 of 124 Amsas of a Nakshatra Since a Savana-day is a little longer thin a Tithi the author of the Jyautiska puts the daily velocity of the sun 15 10 Amsas of a Nakshatra According to definition the sum of the longitudes of the sun and the moon is a Yoga says that the addition of the lunar Tithis to the daily Amsas of the sun is a Yogi evidently it is a Yoga wluch 15 given 18 7 name to the sum of the longitudes of the sun and the moon supposed to move in opposite directions along the ecliptic the same eximples given 10 verse 19 Wlicn the author In the first 28 called Yoga; The Nakshatra of the Yoga is founil by applying the formula giren in ret ses 20 and 25 for finding the moon's and the sun's Nakshatias. 26. The Blinšesla (73/121) anil its one-third, and the Dırasāmsallāga of the 14 days of a Parra and its one-third, the fraction being left out or taken as an Maglā for 11 days at the rate of one Nakshatra per slay is Purvāshādha from Magliā. In the 2nd case the Nakshatra of the Sth Parva is Rohini according to the formula given in verse 19. The 9th from it 19 Uttaraphalguni, the Nakshatra of the 10th lunar day Now to find out the sun & Naksliatra, on the two Yoga days Here the formula is P. plus (11 P. plus 9 T)/124 For the 1st Yoga the formula gives 1113 That is, the sun was in the 2nd Nakshatra from Dhanishthá It is Satabhishaj But we have to add to this 14, since the Jamas begin their cycle with full moon, leaving the sun at a distance of 14 Nakshatras from Dlianislithā or the end of Śravana, while according to the Vedāngajyautisha the sun was with the moon in the Dhanishthi Nakshatra Accordingly 14 plus 1 is 15, the fifteenth from Dhanishtlā is Maglia in whichi according to the Jainas the sun was in the 1st Yoga. Now for the Nakshatra of the 5th Yoga:-Here the number of Parvas is 8 and that of the Tithis is 9. Hence 8 plus (11X8 plus 9X 9)/124 is equal to . Add 14 as before The sum will be 23, that is, the sun was at the beginning of Jyeshţha or at the end of Anuradbi, which is 22nd from Dhanishtha. In the 27th verse we are given the kalās equivalent to the Paiva-bhajesha jeferred to in verse 23 and also the characteristic of the Bhasesha indicating an increase of a day in a Parva over and above the preceding Parva Here the word "Bhädäna-kalas 26. is taken from the 21st versc by way of Anuvritti. The last word of the verse should be read as “ avetya" and not as "avedya," 3 tion Divasamsabhaga erill jerr consists of 306 days; it also contains 6 ci-one, tiro Ayinae, called the Uttarijant and the 29 integral number, are the Bhādūna-halās, the halás necessary to arrive at the Nakshatra of the Parva, (The word "Bhudana-kalās is taken from the 21st zerse by way of what is called " Anuvritte") If the Blasesha of the Parza in question is greater than that of the preceding Parva by half a Nakshatra or more than half a Nakshatra, then an increase of a day should be known by 9 or a multiple of 9 appearing as numerator in the Blasesha of the Parva in ques- 27 "Three hundred and sixty six days, one year, Bhasesha of the Parya rasi is 1 (vide verse 11), is 7 kalās which the moon tahes over and above a day to pass through a Nakshatra Hence the daily Amsas for 14 days are 14 x 7 equal to 98 Its one third is nearly 33 The one-thud of Bhasesha is a which is equal to nearly 24 Hence 73+21+-98 +33 or 228 are the halas which are to be added to the kalus of the Parva tithis and multiplied by 11 and divided by the kalās equivalent to a Bla or Nakshatra m order to arrive at the Nahshatra of a given Parva Thus hus been explained in verse 21 In the 58th, 79th, 87tb, 100th, 108th Parvas the numerator of the Bhamsa is a multiple of nie Hence in those Parvas there is an increase of a Nakshatraequivalent day over and above the day of their preceding Paivas In the 78tlı, tlie Blimsigh es 45 diye, while in the 79th, it gives 46 days While in the 86tli at is 50, in the 87th it is 51, while in 99th it 18 58, in 100th 16 18 58!, while in 107th it 1962, in 105th 16 19 03 In uneven number of Parvae, the increasc 18 more than all a dny and it does not contım the number 9, the -haracteristic number The memng of the 28tli, verse is that a solar 27 Dakshın izana, and 12 months of 30 days creb, years make a Yugh.

"The Lagna of the five Vishuvas o equinoctial days in a Yuga is the rise of the Asvin Nakshatra in the Uttarayana; and that in the fis Dakshinayana is the rise of the Svätı Nakshatra. "I a Yuga of 1,830 days the moon rises 1,768 times; an in the same period the moon makes 1,809 sideri revolutions." 28 & 2 Tlie above verse means that in a year thic si mahes one siderial revolution, and in a Yuga of ſi years he passes through every Nakshatra 5 times; t. moon makes in a Yuge 67 siderial revolutions, and the rate of two Ayanas in a revolution she inak 2x 67, that is 134 Ayanas. The number of Parvas a Yuga is 124 : one-Courth of a Parva is called a Pīd 121 Küshthas inahe a kala. The Kalalokaprahāsa of the Jainis says (66) thu in cach Yuga there are 134 lunar Ayavas; an Ajana Hence the time he ticket to fry trips vinpear 31. are a ediulārtas three. tay to pass through a Nakshatra, the sun tahes 13 the passing of a planet through half tho (ircle of tho makes 67x27 or 1,809 sideral revolutions Manthir time she takes to pass through a Naknuti i 180/1509 which is equal to 1 day and 7/00% of idly, in , of 1,830 days the sun passes through 27 Avrilir Nakshatra is 1830/135 which is mully dyn an 31 Pāra; a similar number of Kāshthas (that is, 128) is hala." 30. In a Yuga the number of Sävana, lunar, and suerial months is 61, 62, and 07, respectively; the number of days in a Sūlana month is 30, a solas is the revolution of the sun through the 27 Nahshatras, Ten halās and plus one-twentieth of a halā as a Nädika; two Nädikas Mulārta; thusty at day which is 600 lalás increased by 32.
