w mo W/*WWW PRCTILAL SANski, 6:3 CHECKO013 Inin weface. The following pages and those in the Se: cond Part now ready for the press, are an ittempt towards leading the young pupil by short and easy steps through the rudiments of Sanskrit Grammar and Vocabulary to the practice of Sanskrit composition. In putting che lessons togather and in deciding upon ihe form and arrangement best adapted for the purpose, the author has in the main consulted his own experience as teacher of Sanskuit. He has therefore borrowed largely from the notes and hints his own pupils have had from time to time in a course of instruction, The object of this first part is to give the pupil an int ligent grounding in the declen sion of im int bases ending in vowels, the declens post all the important pronoindicative present of verbs in

each of the ten conjugations, as well as in the
use of the principle indeclinables in common
use. For the better understanding of the
forms throughout, the lessons are made to
start with a few general rules and illustrations
sufficiently clear and comprehensive for the
exercises that follow. The word-lists and
the models after each set of rules, supply
every thing the pupil will require for the
cxercises given and for many more
the
teacher might frame. The two glossaries at
end are further helps in the same direction.
A number of model questions has also been
given after each lesson for testing the pupil's
progress, his knowledge of the rules and
of the forms put before him. No pains have
been spared to make the book a suitable guid
for the end in view for the school boy
and the private student alike; while teachers
will, it is hoped, find a method and a plan
ready at hand admitting of easy/ `nlargement
for the benifit of individual pur :p classes,

Preface to the 2nd. Editon. The first cdition being out of print, I have availed myself of the opportunity thus offered to bring out an improved edition under my own eye by making such slight alteration here and there in the body of the book as appeared to me recessary. The most im portant change however is the addition sentences for daily use as well as a few but sufficiently large number of letters and applications to furnish the student with models of this kind of composition in Sanskrit and to give him an idea how people aquainted with Sanskrit, especially in the upper provinces still speak and write in that language, My heartiest thanks are due to those gentlemen wno have received the book with favour and have appreciated it worth and to Babu Tarapad Ghoshal M. A. Head Master Zilah shool Bhagalpur who has helped me fully in both the editions and above all to the Inspector of schools Behar Circle, who in spite of a little clamour in some interested quarter has given it a place in the course of studies for zila schools under his controle.
