·PREFATORY NOTE In reprinting the volume (third issue). the opportunity has been taken to include the figures for later years, 1927 to 1930, which were issued in annual addenda and the figures for 1931 as well. The charts have also been brought up-to-date. 2. The first portion of the volume (pages 1 to 4) consists of four summary tables showing index numbers of prices from 1861 to 1931, the figure for 1873 being taken as the standard or base (100). This year was considered to be a year of normal character, and it was the year when silver began to fall consequent on the general demonetisation of silver by Germany and other countries. Summary table I shows (i) the unweighted index numbers of prices of (a) exported articles, (b) imported articles, and (c) all articles combined, and (11) the weighted index numbers. Summary table II states the percentage of increase or decrease in the index numbers of prices for each year, compared with those for the preceding year, in respect of (a) exported articles, (b) imported articles, and (c) all articles. Summary table III shows unweighted index numbers of retail prices of food-grains in India, and summary table IV exlubits the percentage of increase or decrease for each year compared with those for the preceding year in respect of retail prices in the preceding table. 3 The second portion of this volume contains a series of general tables (Nou. V to IX) Table V shows the average prices of each article from 1801 to 1931 and table VI their unweighted index numbers. Table VII states the retail prices of food-grains from 1861 to 1931. Table VIII compares the gold prices in India with those in certain forcign countries from 1890 to 1931, the average for the quinquennium 1890-1894 being taken as 100. Table IX shows the prices of bar silver in Bombay and the rates of exchange from 1873-74 to 1931-32. The third portion of the publication contains three appendices (A to C). Appendices A and B contain lists of the articles included in the index numbers and the sources of the price quotations on which the index numbers are based, Appendix C explains the construction of weighted index numbers.
