“The heathen perish day by day,
Thousands on thousands pass away ;
O Christians, to their rescue fly !
Preach Jesus to them ere they die."
Missionary Hymn.

“You send your missionaries out
To teach us honest dealing ;
They loudly preach to us about
The wickedness of stealing;
To truth and justice inculcate
Is their diurnal labour ;
And dire, they tell us, is the fate
Of those who rob their neighbour.
Yet while they urge such points as these
In most impressive sermons,
You English, with the Portuguese,
And Dutch and French and Germans,
Agree ( regardless of laws
Of Him you call your Maker )
To take our land without just cause
And grab our every acre.
If this be Christianity
Why, all of us agree, then,
You Christians, when a chance you see
Are far, far worse than heathen.
And 'tis, alas, our sorry lot
While listening to your teaching,
To quickly learn you practise not
The creed that you are preaching.”

* "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature, He that believeth and is baptised shall be saved ; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that belive ; in my name shall they cast out devils ; they shall speak with new tongues ; they shall take up serpents ; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them ; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."Mark xvi, 15-18. রােমান কাথলিক চর্চ *" Faith is the cry of all theologians ; believe with us and you will be saved ; refuse to believe and you are lost. Yet they know nothing of what belief means. They dogmatize, but they fail to persuade......"-Froude's Short Studies on Great Subjects.
বাইবলের * See Note II.
* “We walk by faith, not by sight."--2 Cor. V-7. + " You assert that the human race merited eternal reprobation because their common father had transgressed the divine command and that the crucifixions of the Son of God was the only sacrifice or sufficient efficacy to satisfy eternal justice. But it is no less inconsistent with justice and subversive of morality that millions should be responsible for a crime which they had no share in committing, than that, if they had really committed it, the crucifixion of an innocent being could absolve them from moral turpitude. Ferrente ulla civitas latorem istiusmodi legis, ut con. demnaretur filius, aut nepos si pater, aut avus deliquisset ? Certainly this is a mode of legislation peculiar to a state of savageness and anarchy; this is the irrefragable logic of tyranny and imposture."-A Refutation of Deism. (Shelley). !

NOTES I.--"It is both wonderful and distressing that even under the influence of the most exalted religious excitement, any one should prefer the pleasure of listening to the pious exaggerations and fictions of missionaries and Exeter Hall orators, to that derived from the contemplation of improvements, however small, in the comforts, morals, and happiness of our dear countrymen at home."- The Task of To-day by Major Evans Bell (London: J. Watson 1852). " It makes one's heart bleed to think of the wretched children in squalid English cities, giving their hard-earned pence to fatten missionaries and to murder natives by the unsuitable customs and virtues of a different civilizations; it makes one shudder to think of the enormous sums of money wasted in building huge, gaudy churches, and supporting a political priestcraft here, while more heathens are killed in a day in the East End of London alone-ati the very centre of Christendom-by cold, hunger, and by the cruel slavery and demoralisation of our unjust system of society, than would, in a year, miss happy, natural deaths in the whole of the vast South Pacific, were there not one missionary left."-Brown Men and I'omen (1898) by E. Reeves. "The impartial in these matters will never be able to consider it as satisfactory that so large a volume of energy~we do not refer to the work of the missionaries themselves, but to the money subscribed at home to finance them-should be expended on an idea largely made up of religious conceptions that are generally felt to be altogether unsupportable.”—The Pioneer, July 11, 1900. " Nowhere in India-not even in the direst time of famine and pestilence-is there such utter depravity, such hopeless physical, moral and spiritual degradation as that which exists in the great commercial cities of Europe, and directly brought about by modern industrial methods."--Basis for Artistic and Industrial Revival in India. (Mr. E. B. Havell). 3 (vo) "Shall we go on conferring our civilization upon the Peoples that Sit in Darkness [i.e., the heathens), or shall we give these poor things a rest ?...... Would it not be prudent to get our civilizationtools together, and see how much stock is left on hand in the way of glass-beads and theology and Maxim guns and Hymn books, and trade-gin and torches of progress and enlightenment (patent adjustable ones, good to fire villages with upon occasion) and balance the books and arrive at the profit and loss, so that we may intelligently decide whether to continue the business or sell out the property and start a new civilization scheme on the proceeds ?"- Mark Twain in the North American Review (1901). "The Chinese were greatly puzzled as to how it was possible for people who were able to build locomotives and steamships to have a religion based on a belief in devils, ghosts, impossible miracles and all other absurdities and impossibilities peculiar to the religion taught by the missionaries." --Li Hung Chang. (Li Hung Chang's Scrap Book, compiled by Sir Hiram Maxim). Extract from a review of a work on Indian Missions by Dr. R.N. Cust which appeared in the Times Weekly Editior. (August 17, 1894) :-“The reckless falsities of the platform, and the gross misrepresentations of non n-Christian faiths which supply the stockin-trade of the lower type of the subscription-seeking missonary on his trips to England, these are the blemishes of missionary advocacy at home. Dr. Cust's pages may pain some, but they will profit many. He thinks the cause too good to be served by anything approaching an untruth. He laments that the sensationalism at home compels honestly-intentioned missionaries abroad to supply materials of a highly-coloured character and to strain facts to suit the British demand for heathen horrors." 11.-" But the doctrine of Incarnation throws everything into confusion. No part of it is thinkable. While the Second Person of the Trinity is in heaven with the First Person, the Third Person is alleged to have had intercouse with the Virgin Mary, and the Hesultant birth is the Second Person. At what moment, we ask, (es) 46 was did the Second Person leave the heaven where he had been from all eternity ? Was it at the Annunciation, or at birth, or at the beginning of his ministry ?"--The Bible Untrustworthy by Walter Jekyll, M. A.( London, Watts, 1904 ) p. 253. It seems less credible that the God whose immensity is uncircumscribed by space should have committed adultery with a carpenter's wife, than that some bold knaves or insane dupes had deceived the „credulous multitude."-Shelley in A Refutation of Deism. [ See Paley's Evidences, vol. 1. chap. i ). Anthropology puts utterly out of court the notion of a fall from primal innocence, on which the whole Christian scheme is based. Without that lapse into sin, where was the need for the atonement ? The fundamental concept of Christianity is that of Paradise Lost through ancestral error or crime, and Paradise Regained through a piacular sacrifice. But we now know of an absolute surety that Paradise never lost that there never was a catastrophic fall from a state of innocence. The innocence of our first parents was the innocence of the beasts. Sin was born with society..."-William Archer in the R. P. Annual 1919. (London : Watts ). Ill.-"Never before was Europe the theatre of such ceaseless and sanguinary wars ; never were the people so brutalised by ignorance and debased by slavery. I will admit that one prediction of Jesus Christ has been indisputably fulfilled. I come not to bring peace upon earth, but a sword. [ Matt. x -34 ). Christianity indeed has equalled Judaism in the atrocities and exceeded it in the extent of its desolation."--A Refutation of Deism ( Shelley ). " The Church appropriated the vices, but not the virtues, of the barbarians, It imitated and surpassed their cruelty ; it did not attempt to rival them in moral purity...... Papal pretensions : were carried to the highest pitch by Gregory VII, who first assumed the exclusive title of Pope. He and his successors claimed to be lords of the universe and links between the divine and the human, arbiters of the fate of empires and the destinies of the race, rulers of ( 0 ) kings and princes, regulating not only their religion, but their state policy and domestic life......... In the tenth century the Papacy reached the lowest depths of degradation. By the most nefarious intrigues it fell under the rule of some infamous women, the notorious prostitute Marozia and her mother and sister, who had sufficient influence to place their own bastards in the chair of St. Peter."-Christianity and Civilisation by C. T. Gorham (London Watts, 1914). Christianity while professing to be a religion of love has always seemed to me in history and practice a religion of hate, with its jealous and revengeful Deity, its long record of religious wars and inquisitions, and its mutual reproaches between sects of being under the curse of eternal perdition."--Lafcadio Hearn. IV. "No barbarian, no infidel, no Saracen ever perpetrated such wanton and cold blooded atrocities of cruelty as the warriors of the cross of Christ”-Milman's History of Latin Christianity (London : Murray) ; iv, 188. "In the eighth century Charlemagne made Christianity compulsory by killing those who refused to embrace it, and though this made an end of the voluntary character of conversion, Charlemagne may claim to be the first Christian who put men to death for any point of doctrine that really mattered. From his time onward the history of Christian controversy reeks with blood and fire, torture and warfare. The Crusades, the persecutions in Albi and elsewhere, the Inquisition, the 'wars of religion,' which followed the Reformation, all presented themselves as Christian phenomena." Bernard Shaw in Androcles and the Lion. "In the conduct of the Christians to the rest of the world or to one another Ammianus says that no savage beasts could equal its cruelty. Ammianus was a Pagan, but St. Gregory Nazianzen, endorsing this, says that the Kingdom of Heaven was converted into the image of chaos ; it was like hell."-Edward Clodd's Gibbon and Christianity. (London : Watts, 1916). "When people who are without knowledge exult over the ܚܙ :
-establishment of these so-called Christian States out of the ruin of the Turkish Empire, they entirely overlook the fact that their establishment has always been marked by the most brutal cruelty and often extermination, towards other races and creeds. Thus the Bulgarians after the Russian invasion ruthlessly drove out three-fourths and practically destroyed one-half of the peaceful Mussulman population of Bulgaria and Eastern Roumelia. Over a million innocent Mahometans, mostly women and children, then perished...... After all, these unfortunate Mussalmans have just as much right to live and flourish and possess their lands and cultivate their crops as their 'Christian' neighbours. They are far more temperate, honest, brave, patient and industrious than the great majority of so-called Christians, who give themselves such airs of superiority, and whom their ignorant admirers in this country praise so recklessly."--The Battlefields of Thessalay by Sir Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett M. P. (London : Murray, 1897). V. "The claim so persistently made during medieval times that the clerical order should be exempt from civil punishment for crime is morally indefensible............. This immunity was claimed on the ground that the priest 'made God and therefore that the redeemer who dwelt in the body of the priest could not be delivered to the defiling jurisdiction of the secular State.......... They (the clergy] were in the habit of commuting offences tried in their courts for fines in money, from which the Church derived a revenue greater than that of the king. Their moral laxity would have been considered shameful in the most dissolute layman. It is said that the Prior-elect of Canterbury had seventeen bastard children in one village. Benefices were openly farmed out and sold. For the administration of the sacraments fees were often demanded. The clergy carried weapons, and frequented taverns and places of greater disrepute; they were notorious violators of the laws against deer-stealing. It is recorded by Mosheim that between the years 1154 and 1163 no fewer than a hundred murders had been commit. ted in England by ecclesiastics, for which they had never been ( ৬৪ called to account, while their unpunished sexual crimes were of almost daily occurrence."-Christianity and Civilization. "In Spain the seduction of female penitents by their confessors. was a prevailing vice which no penalties could suppress...... The quibbling manner in which the Papal bulls were interpreted is shown by the fact that up to 1622 the prohibition had extended only to seduction in the act of hearing confessionsma regulation that gave confessors a margin of safety which they were not slow to utilize."- Gorham's Spanish Inquisition. "When about the middle of the nineteenth century, evidence was being found of man's existence upon the earth for a period long anterior to the seven thousand years or so of the Semitic tradition, it was regarded with suspicion by men of science as well as the world in general...... The importance of these discoveries was readily recognised by geologists; but such revolutionary views as to the remote antiquity of man naturally met with much opposition from the guardians of traditional teaching."-Discovery or the Spirit and Service of Science. (London : Macmillan, 1917). " In the bold appeal which Roger Bacon made to experiment and the observation of Nature, he stood out as the champion of unfettered inquiry in a period of scientific stagnation, and he suffered persecution, banishment and imprisonment for his temerity."- Ibid. " The action of the Inquisition in forcing Galileo to deny the evidence of his own senses cannot be condemned too strongly ; but the fact that the Church of Rome was responsible for the recantation may almost be said to hale been incidental. Had the Salvation Army or a council of politicians possessed the same powers in tbose days they would probably have been just as active in crushing what was believed to be a pestiferous doctrine for which the people were not prepared and which was, therefore, a danger to the State."- Tbid. "Thirty-three years before Galileo had been brought before the Inquisition, Bruno had declared to the same body his philosophical (be) creed in unmistakable terms...... For teaching these doctrines Bruno was handed over to the governor of Rome in 1600, with the usual recommendation that he be punished 'with as great clemency as possible, and without effusion of blood-an equivocal form of words which signified burning at the stake."-Ibid. I was ; "Newton's: experiments with a glass prism were marvels of accurate study and cautious conclusion, yet they brought him more trouble than praise...... No wonder such opposition was disturbing to Newton, and that it almost made him decide to do no work except for his private satisfaction. so persecuted with discussions arising out of my theory of light,' he wrote in 1675, 'that I blamed my own impudence for parting with so substantial a blessing as my quiet to run after a shadow'; and a year later he remarked, 'I see a man must either resolve to put out nothing new, or to become a slave to defend it.' "-Ibid. Professor Tyndall writes :-"Through all the history of thought we find that physical science in past times exerted scarcely any influence in determining any of the great questions of life. Philosophy, comprehending within itself theology was the sole mistress of the human mind. The physical sciences were deemed poor, despised elements, informing one of nothing but a few facts relating to dead and inert matter. Those who cultivated them were deemed as poor in "spirit as were the sciences in their subjects. No one cared to listen to them, no one honoured them. If a man succeeded in making any great discoveries which gave him a control over any of the forces of nature, so much the worse for him ; he did it, not by research, but by converse with the evil one ; and he might bless his fate if he had not to answer before an ecclesiastical tribunal the charge of dealing with the black arts. Within the last few centuries only has a change come over men's natures in this respect. By slow degrees at first, science won for itself a hearing, then inquiry, then respect; within the last hundred years it has made rapid progress, and at last, in our own day, has obtained a position which ( By ) 11 enables it to assert an equality to, if not a superiority oyer, the philosophy which so long kept it in the shade." VI.-" They [ the Protestant Reformers ) gave up Transubstantiation, the worship of the Virgin Mary and the saints, the veneration of relics, and faith in daily miracles ; but they clung firmly to, and imposed on future generations, the belief in demoniacal possession and the verbal inspiration of a collection of ancient and fallible writings. On these subjects the Protestant countries in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were dominated by a credulity which differed little from that of the Dark Ages. Faith divorced from reason broke out into the witchcraft mania, and vast numbers of innocent persons, mostly women, were put to death with atrocious cruelty. How was it that the moral vigour of Protestantism did not prevent these barbarities? Because the Reformers held the Bible to be above reason."-Christianity and Civilisation, VII.-" The Swiss, Belgian, Scottish and Saxon Confessions asserted the right of the civil magistrate to punish heresy. Luther distinctly maintained this, though he had advocated toleration when his translation of the New Testament was condemned...... Calvin, Beza and Jurieu wrote books to prove that persecution was lawful...... With the exception of Zuinglius, Socinus and Castellio all the Protestant Reformers advocated persecution. Castellio was the only eminent man who denounced the murder of Servetus, an achievement applauded by all sections of Protestantism."-Christianity and Civilisation. " Make a faith or a dogma absolute and persecution becomes a logical consequence ; and Dominican burns a Jew, or Calvin an Arian, or Nero a Christian. or Elizabeth or Mary a Papist or Protestant, or their father both or either according to his humour ; and acting without any pangs of remorse, but on the contrary, with strict notions of duty fulfilled.”—Thackeray ( Pendennis ). VIII.-" Descartes lived and died a good catholic, and prided himself upón having demonstrated the existence of God and of ( 99 ) the soul of man, As a reward for his exertions his old friends the Jesuits put his work upon the 'Index,' and called him an Atheist while the Protestant divines of Holland declared him to be both a Jesuit and an Atheist. His books narrowly escaped being burnt by the hangman ; the fate of Vanini was dangled before his eyes; and the misfortunes of Galileo so alarmed him that he well-nigh renounced the pursuits by which the world has so greatly benefited and was driven into subterfuges and evasions which were not worthy of him......... There are one or two living men who, a couple of centuries hence, will be remembered as Descartes is now, because they have produced great thoughts which will live and grow as long as mankind lasts. If the twenty-first century studies their history it will find that the Christianity of the middle of the nineteenth century recognized them only as objects of vilification.'- Huxley. ( Lay Sermons ). IX. "Although modern Protestantism has never pretended to miraculous powers, yet Protestant pious frauds have always abound- .ed and abound in the present day. It is a gross fraud to gloss over and conceal the infamous characters and obviously interested motives of many of the principal, actors in the Reformation, in England particularly, as Protestant writers have done. Awful interpositions of Providence, exaggerated and fictitious acco nts of death-bed scenes, both of believers and infidels, the lying reports of missionaries, and in particular, the long evangelical speeches they are so fond of putting into the mouths of their converts, are.instances of Protestant pious frauds. Such are also some outrageous falsehoods and misrepresentations regarding Catholic doctrines and practice."--The Task of To-day. X. "The present undoubted superiority of European nations, though much overrated, cannot be justly attributed to the Christian religion, but to far different causes, of which the principal one is the superior energy and activity of the races of which they are composed. Were the Crusaders more virtuous than the Saracens ? Was it Christian morality that prompted those unjust, unprovoked (yo) seau wars, and useless bloodshed ? Were the Christian Spaniards more virtuous than the Moors whom they expelled from Spain ? Did Christian morality teach Catholics and Protestants to burn, hang and torture heretics? Will any candid person assert that it was Christian morality that taught them gradually to abandon this practice ?"-The Task of To-day. XI. "The exertions of Locke, Hume, Gibbon, Voltaire, Rousand their disciples, in favour of oppressed and deluded humanity, are entitled to the gratitude of mankind. Yet it is easy to calculate the degree of moral and intellectual improvement which the world would have exhibited, had they never lived. A little more nonsense would have been talked for a century or two ; and perhaps a few more men, women and children burnt as heretics."- Selected Prose Works of Shelley. (London : Watts and Co., 1915), p. 108. Again :-"The modern nations of the civilised world owe the progress which they have made-as well in those physical sciences in which they have already excelled their masters, as in the moral and intellectual inquiries, in which, with all the advantage of the experience of the latter, it can scarcely be said that they have yet equalled them to what is called the revival of learning ; that: is, the study of the writers of the age which preceded and immediately followed the government of Pericles, or of subsequent writers, who were, so to speak, the rivers flowing from those immortal, fountains." (P. 123). "In every country, my friend, the bonzes, the brahmins, and the priests deceive the people ; all reformations begin from the laity."-Goldsmith (The Citisen of the World.) "The influence of theology for centuries numbed and paralysed: the intellect of Europe....... The pagan literature of antiquity and the Mohammedan school of science were the chief agencies in resuscitating the dormant energies of Christendom."--History of European Morals, Vol. II, 17. (Lecky). "Muhammadanism, like contemporary Christianity, at first despised Science. Nevertheless, it Mesopotamia some Persian in- ৬৯ ) : fluence mingled with the nonsense of ignorant Arabia, and intervened actually to save the science of the Greek and Roman philosophers from positive extinction. We must thank the Muhammadan East and Muhammadan West (in Spain and Barbary) for maintaining the continuance of Science as a living force until renascent Europe could once more take the lamp from the hands of Islam.”—Sir Harry H. Johnston in A Generation of Religious Progress. (London : Watts, 1916). "In mathematics the Arabians acknowledged their indebtedness to two sources, Greek and Indian, but they greatly improved upon both ......... From the Hindus the Arabs learnt arithmetic, especially that valuable invention termed by us the Arabic numerals, but honourably ascribed by them to its proper source under the designation of Indian numerals'?”—The Intellectual Development of Europe (Draper). "In this nineteenth century, as at the dawn of modern physical science, the cosmogony of the semi-barbarous Hebrew is the incubus of the philosopher and the opprobrium of the orthodox. Who shall number the patient and earnest seekers after truth, from the days of Galileo until now, whose lives have been embittered and their good name blasted by the mistaken zeal of Bibliolaters? Who shall count the host of weaker men whose sense of truth has been destroyed in the effort to harmonize impossibilities-whose life has been wasted in the attempt to force the generous new wine of Science into the old bottles of Judaism, compelled by the outcry of the strong party ? It is true that if philosophers have suffered, their cause has been amply avenged. Extinguished theologians lie about the cradle of every science as the strangled snakes beside that of Hercules; and history records that whenever science and orthodoxy have been fairly opposed, the latter has been forced to retire from the lists, bleeding and crushed, if not annihilated ; scotched, if not slain. But orthodoxy is the Bourbon of the world of thought. It learns not, neither can it forget ; and though at present, bewildered and afraid to move, it is as willing as ever to ( १० "Sir insist that the first chapter of Genesis contains the beginning and end of sound science; and to visit, with such petty thunderbolts as its half-paralysed hands can hurl those who refuse to degrade Nature to the level of primitive Judaism."-Lay Sermons, (Huxley). "In our conceptions of Religion we remained with the dogma of the Earth being everything and the Universe merely an appendage, not only down to three hundred years ago, bul over the vast proportion of humanity down to the present day. So little is astro. nomy taught in our schools and colleges, so little does it enter into the conceptions, say, of the agricultural labourer or even the artisan, among Christian peoples-the masses, in short-that they are still in their unformed speculations convinced that this little grain of dust in a Universe immeasurably vast is the end-all and be-all of every-- thing.". Harry Johnston. (A Generation of Religious Progress.) "Traditional education has, owing to causes which are not far to seek, deprived the well-to-do class of a knowledge of, and interest in, Man's relation to Nature, and of his power to control natural processes..... ........ To effect this democracy will demand that thosewho carry on public affairs shall not be persons solely acquainted with the elegant fancies and stories of past ages, but shall be trained in the acquisition of natural knowledge and keenly active in the skilful application of Nature-control to the development of the wellbeing of the community."--The Kingdom of Man by Sir Ray Lankester. XII. "The conflict of science and religion is one of long standing : and though the advocates of the former have sometimes gravely erred in dogmatising about subjects outside the range of research in either the laboratory or the museum, the advocates of the latter were, on the whole, the more frequent offenders. Let me.quote one or two instances. Every school, whether Christian or secular, now agrees in teaching that the earth is a globe ; yet two eminent Fathers of the Church, in the fourth century repudiated that opinion, and even at the end of the fifteenth century Pope:
( 9 ) Alexander ignored the fact after it had been proved by circumnavigation. Yet later than this, leaders in the Reformed no less than in the Roman Catholic Churches denounced those who maintained the sun, not the earth, to be centre of our planetary system. For asserting the former Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo were persecuted-the last severely. From a very early date the Professors of Chemistry and Physics, of Anatomy and Medicine felt the burden of ecclesiastical displeasure. Little more than a century ago vaccination was denounced, not as ineffective, but as wicked, while some now living can remember what was said about the use of anæsthetics. Geology, that still useful science, was always regarded with disfavour. In 1878 the publication of a small manual by a well-known religious society, though it said no more than every educated Christian would now accept, excited the wrath of not a few who posed as defenders of religion, and the older among us can remember how the Origin of Species, which made its first appearance in 1859, was assailed with far more zeal than knowledge.”- Report of Canon Bonney's Sermon reproduced from an English paper by the Statesman, October 18,1915. " In the eighteenth century inoculation against small-pox was condemned by the French theologians of the Sorbonne, and by a large number of the English clergy, some of whom, on Biblical authority, thought it a diabolical practice, and an 'encroachment on the prerogatives of Jehovah, whose right it is to wound and smite'."--Christianity and Civilisation. XIH. For a long time Copernicus dared not publish the truth about the solar system, and seventy years after his death his book was formally condemned by the Roman Curia and put into the Index, the accu curacy of which was guaranteed by papal bull. The Protestants imitated the example; Luther denounced Copernicus as a fool and an upstart astrologer, while Melancthon considered him devoid of honesty and decency, and Calvin wanted to know who would place the authority of Copernicus above that of the Holy Spirit. The Bible declared that the earth stood fast, and that Joshua ( 92 ) had commanded the sun to stand still. That was sufficient for the good Reformers, and the University of Wittenberg kept out of sight the facts revealed by the telescope...... Galileo was the archinfidel and atheist, against whom the Archbishop of Pisa wrote bitterly, while privately professing admiration of his genius. The proposition that the sun does not go round the earth was condemned as 'foolish, absurd, false in theology, 'and heretical, because expressly contrary to Holy Scripture. By order of the Pope, Galileo was brought before the Inquisition, and his subsequent recantation is too well known to need description."-Christianity and Civilisation, “Even in the nineteenth century scientific gatherings in Italy were forbidden by the popes; many Catholic universities, especially in Spain, excluded the Newtonian system.”--Christianity and Civilisation. XIV. “During a considerable period of the history of the Christian Church, and by many of its principal authorities, the study of natural philosophy was not only disregarded but discom - mended."--Inductive Science, vol.I, 268. (Whewell). “The philosophy of Newton and the metaphysics of Locke appeared ; but, like all new truths, they were at once received with opposition and contempt.”—Goldsmith ( The Bee). XV. Finally, let us ask why it is that the old superstitions have so suddenly lost countenance that although, to the utter disgrace of the nation's leaders and rulers the laws by which perseculors can destroy or gag all freedom of thought and speech in these matters are still unrepealed and ready to the hand of our bigots and fanatics (quite recently a respectable shopkeeper was convicted of 'blasphemy' for saying that if a modern girl accounted for an illicit pregnancy by saying she had conceived of the Holy Ghost, we should know what to think ; a remark which would never have occurred to him had he been properly taught how the story was grafted on the gospel), yet somehow they are used only against poor men, and that only in a half-hearted way."-Bernard Shaw in the Preface to Androcles and the Lion. + (90) . XVI.-"All this absurd opposition, not merely to science, but to common sense, was based on the most literabinterpretation of Genesis and in reliance on Augustine's dictum that nothing should be accepted save on the authority of scripture. Burton, Whiston, Wesley, Adam Clarke, Richard Watson, and many more, held that before the sin of Adam there were no convulsions of the earth, no serpents, no thorns and thistles, no labour and no death ; that earthquakes were caused by human sin; that geology was a black and dangerous art, an awful evasion of revealed truth, and an attempt to depose the Creator from his office. For her researches in physical geography Mary Somerville was denounced by name by Dean Cockburn, who also visited with severe disapproval the British Association for the Advancement of Science."-Christianity and Civilization. women, XVII.-" The dogma of the verbal inspiration of the Bible gave a terrible force to the command that witches should be destroyed. A papal bull of 1484, in obedience to this injunction, ordered a general persecution of witches, and in a few years Catholics and Protestants rivalled one another in murdering old Luther and Bodin were at one with the popes and bishops in their denunciations of the crime of witchcraft ; and while astroinomy was dissolving to nothingness the Prince of the power of the air,' a long line of theologians were contending for his reality. Among them were Casaubon, Henry More, Cudworth, Glanvil, Richard Baxter, the Mathers in America and John Wesley, who declared that to give up witchcraft was in effect to give up the Bible."-Christianity and Civilisation. “ Witchcraft is not dead...... It is true said Mr. A. R. Wright, the editor of Folk Lore, that the black or evil witch has largely disappeared, but the white witch, to whom villagers resort for the cure of all manner of diseases, still survives in Yorkshire and in 'many other parts of England."-Reproduced from an English Paper in the Indian Daily News, 10-12-13.
( 48 ) 22 runs even “ Something old and something new, Something borrowed and something blue." So the rhyme ; and the most advanced of womankind who deigns to enter the holy state of matrimony and scoffs at superstition yields to this one and obeys it in the hope that by adding these items to her bridal array ill-luck onay be avoided and happiness and good fortune grow from more to more' in her new life...... In some country districts every scrap of green is taboo at a wedding. • After green comes black' is a popular superstition.........Woe betide the maid who dares to try on her wedding gown before the auspicious hour. To obviate the dire calamities which would inevitably follow such a proceeding somepart is left unfinished when the final survey and inspection is made. An umbrella should never be opened indoors. Never let a baby gaze into a mirror till it is a year old. There is an almost universal belief that Friday is an unlucky day. [ This arises from the fact that for centuries Fridays had been chosen for executions. ] Many women in England will neither wear green themselves nor let their daughters wear it. Wear green, wear black.' The mother's phrase Kiss the place and make it well' goes. back to the days when the only doctors were sorcerers. At the sight of the new a man turns over his money, and people refuse to look at it through glass. Many people regard it as unlucky to walk under a ladder. Dislike to thirteen at table, the belief that spilling the salt is unlucky are very common superstitions. [Notes from an English: Paper. See also the Indian Daily News, 23-12-11]. "In the Middle Ages the black cat was supposed to be the outcome of the Devil's attempt at creation, and those which belonged to old women were regarded with a great amount of suspicion....... In some parts black cats are considered to bring good luck, and in the North of England some years ago sailors' wives always endea-- voured to have one in the belief that they would ensure the safety moon ( 90 ) of their husbands at sea. Whenever the cat o 'the house is black, the lasses o' lovers will have no lack,' is a well-known Lancashire proverb. In Cornwall there is a superstition that the sties that come on children's eyelids can be cured by passing the tail of a çat nine times over the place ; if the cat is a male, the cure is. considered more certain."-The Ladies' Field, Feb. 3, 1917. xvIII. - Disbelieving in the efficacy of magic, and arguing that human knowledge was incomplete, he [ Roger Bacon ] fell under the displeasure of the Franciscan Order, to which he belonged, and an imprisonment of fourteen years rewarded his premature investigations. Chemistry was long regarded as one of the seven devilish arts.' A papal bull of 1317 strongly condemned the practice of alchemy, in which modern chemistry found its origin...... In 1524 the Parliament of Paris prohibited chemical studies."-Christianity and Civilisation, It was not until some time in the thirteenth century when, for the first time in Europe, "the faint revival of physical science, so long crushed as magic by the dominant ecclesiasticism....... introduced a spirit of scepticism, of doubt, of denial into the realms of unquestioning belief."- Green ( A Short History of the English People ). 06 XIX. " Buddhism enjoins temperance, honesty and benevolence, insists upon charity as the basis of worship, and calls on its followers to appease hunger by gentleness, and overcome evil by good."'-Christianity in Ceylon by Sir J. Emerson Tennant. The most extravagant eulogies have been made upon the purity and sublimity of Christian morals, and the civilising influence they have exercised over a large portion of mankind. There does not appear to have been any lack of sublime moral precepts in every age and almost every nation...... The greatest difficulty experienced by the Christian missionaries in Ceylon is from the exalted morals which form the articles of belief of the Buddhists." -The Task of To-day.
( 94 ) "The Indians are really the most tolerant nation of the world."- Niebuhr. “The edicts [of Asoka] are full of lofty righteousness......obedience to parents ; kindness to children and friends ; mercy towards the brute creation ; indulgence to inferiors; reverence towards the Brahmans and members of the order ; suppression of anger, passion, cruelty or extravagance ; generosity and tolerance and charity—such are the lessons which 'the kindly king, the delight of the gods' inculcates on his subjects.”-Buddhism (T. W. Rhys- Davids). " There is no reason to consider Asoka as an isolated phenomenon irrearly Indian history ; the rare glimpses afforded to us of Vikramaditya, Harsha and others, when the veil of deep obscurity which rests on pre-Mahomedan India is for a moment lifted, reveal to us a well governed prosperous land, with an enlightened administration, and a highly civilised population. Asoka's edicts would have been thrown away upon an ignorant, brutal or vicious nation. They confirm the statements made by such independent witnesses as Megasthenes in the third century B.C. and Hiuen Tsiang in the seventh century A. D. that in ancient India the standard of morality was extraordinarily high."-Indian Historical Studies by Prof. H. G. Rawlinson (London : Longmans Greens and Co., 1913). XX.-"Nobler ideals of charity than those of the pagan moralists it is impossible to find. Consider these sayings of Seneca : • This is the mark of a great and good mind-to aim, not at any fruit from its kind deeds, but at the kind deeds themselves. We bid man to stretch out his hand to the shipwrecked, to show the erring their way, to divide his bread, with the hungry.' 'Our pleasure is to benefit others, even at our own labour, provided we lighten the labour of others; or at our own peril, provided we save others from peril; or at our loss of fortune, provided we alleviate the necessities and distresses of others,' 'Someone is angry with you ; provoke him in return with kindnesses.'"-Christianity and Civilization. 0- ( 49 ) “There is indeed, no fact more patent in history than that with the triumph of Christianity under Constantine the older and finer spirit of charity died out of the world, and gave place to an intolerance and bigotry which were its extreme antithesis, and which have only in recent years come to be mitigated-Paganism and Christianity by J. A. Farrer. XXI. "A careful study of the history of religious toleration will prove that in every Christian country where it has been adopted it has been forced upon the clergy by the authority of the secular classes. At the present day it is still unknown to those nations among whom the ecclesiastical power is stronger than the temporal power"-History of Civilisation in England, Vol. I. “The improved and more stable morality of our civilization is of itself an argument in favour of what I call modern morality. If theological conceptions produce no better results than they did in the Middle Ages, when they were far more literally accepted than they are now, they clearly cannot command as much confidence as the appeal to reason. Moreover, the historian would probably admit that the humanitarian movement of to-day is rooted in the new doctrines of society that came to birth at the end of the eighteenth century, and in these doctrines religion is undoubtedly postponed to human welfare."--Modern Morality and Modern Toleration by E. "Can Englishmen consistently boast of their freedom while they tolerate the medieval law relating to 'blasphemy'" ?-Edward Granville Eliot in the Literary Guide, January, 1920. An Englishman who is a member of the Church of England and has spent several years as a political officer in Nigeria writes to the East Anglian Daily Times to say that tolerance " is not a prominent virtue of Christianity. In the various districts which I had to administer in Africa there were Christian missionaries of different sects, chiefly Church of England, Roman Catholic and Presbyterian. Of Pagans, Mohammedans and Christians, the last were by far the least tolerant-they could see no good in the two other religions, and they were often bitterly jealous of and antagonistic to one another." Hunting proper, that is the following of hounds of some sort, and especially of fox-hounds, seems to be more popular than ever. .... In fact, some of the causes frequently cited as likely to put an end to hunting have in reality greatly contributed to its increase.". The Times, November 3,1903. Parson Jack Russell was supposed to be heterodox. However, now that Archbishop Lang has stated ex cathedra that it is permissible we take it that the question of dignitv or otherwise will no longer arise. That it is not cruel is, we believe, also agreed It only wants now a special service on the opening day like the opening day of stag-hunting gets, in some parts of France." The Indian Daily News, December 10, 1913. "Cruelty to animals is increasing to an alarming extent; cruelty to horses has become so common as to pass unnoticed, as often as not in our streets. The starved dog excites but little pity. Those who keep their eyes open will see such sights nowadays that may well make them wonder to what favour we shall come by and by when the men come home, and their undisciplined children are grown up, if war has brutalised us at home to this extent in four years ...... The increase of cruelty, the callous indifference that is being shown to the sufferings of Helpless animals, cannot but tend to brutalise by degrees the whole nation, and presently we shall find that we have in our midst, as we say, an enemy of our making-a dragon which we shall need another St. George to slay...... A nation that is brutal to helpless animals is uncivilised and a people who can endure the sight of ill-treated beasts must Jack the qualities which make them to be respected." -Lady's Pictorial (1918). XXIII. Dr. Louis Robinson writing in 1894 (Fortnightly Review) about the cruelty of sport said that men like Descartes (in the 17th century ) who were the leaders of thought of their age and who had studied both natural history and general philosophy, held that brute beasts were non-sentient automata, Dr. Robinson wrote :-'If we endeavour to trace the causes of the awakening own ( bro ) which has taken place among ourselves, we shall find that science has had far more to do with it than has religious teaching...... It has been since science has shaken itself free from ecclesiastical leadingstrings that the study of comparative physiology (together with the growth of the reflective spirit) has brought the truth home to us. The sensory and mental apparatus in man and in the lower animals have been shown to be so similar both in structure and in function that no one can now doubt that brutes feel pain when injured." XXIV. “Brazil is the last remaining civilized land where slavery exists. It owns more slaves than any other civilized land ever possessed. Slavery existed in Brazil since the first colonization of South America by the Portuguese in 1531, the first slaves being the aboriginal races found peacefully living on that wonderful continent...... In 1830 the Brazilian Government declared slavetrade to be piratical ; and in 1871 a law was passed totally abolishing the institution. But these have been practically wholly inoperative."- The Times Weekly Ed., August 3, 1883. “Down to 1805 the utmost punishment assigned by law to the murder of a black man was a fine of £1t sterling, and so many difficulties were in the way of confiction even if the murder was sudden and patent to all, that the law was hardly ever enforced.”- The Story of our Colonies by H. R. Fox Bourne, p. 28. “ The corner-stone of the new Republic is the great truth that the Negro is inferior to the white man, and that slavery is his natural condition.”- Alexander H. Stephens, Vice-President of the Southern Confederacy in 1861. "The important fact remains that the colour line which began in America has spread to Great Britain and especially to its antipodean colonies. 'I have no principles, only prejudice', said Mr. E. Brough in one of his plays and that seems to be the state of a large part of the 'white world.' Common sense goes to the wall where prejudice is concerned, for prejudice is like fashion, it battens on ridicule."-Indian Daily News, May 20, 1914.
( b ) Under the heading " Free those Slaves," the Indian Daily News wrote :-"The other day, would-be settlers in German East Africa were warned as regards labour conditions ip those regions. But not a voice has up to now been raised for the emancipation of the African slaves. At a rough calculation there are about 300,000 slaves in Africa. A shocking figure, no doubt, but very true. The League of Nations, it may not be generally known, is committed to the abolition of slave-owning and it is said that it will cost the League at least £400,000 to free the slaves of German East-Africa alone. But apart from German East-Africa, slave-owning fourishes in full vigour on the rest of the African continent.' Portuguese Africa is no less an offender in this respect. It is shocking to hear that on the two Cocoa islands of St. Thome and Principe belonging 10 Portugal no fewer than 20,000 men, women and children are in a state of bondage. They are mostly on the plantations, but that fact does not detract from the heinousness of the crime of slave. owning. The conditions of life can hardly be called civilised. A home correspondent who takes interest in this subject gives the following statistics :-- The total number of children on the islands appears to be about 4,000 on 85 plantations. The birth rates are given in official docuinents, but the death rates are for some reason --perhaps a significant one-largely concealed, and are only produced from very few plantations. On 12 plantations the deaths of children for one month-a comparatively healthy one-were 24 ; on 14 plantations, 25; and on 15 plantations, 31 ; or upon this basis 24 deaths of children per plantation per annum over the 85 plantations, which would give the total deaths amongst the children as 2,040 out of 4000 a children's death rate of over 500 per 1,000 per If these figures are challenged by the Portuguese slaveowners, then the most convincing way to challenge them is to produce the actual statistics upon all the plantations. The status of slaves in Portuguese West Africa differs in no material respect from those of the cotton and sugar plantations of 70 years ago." Plantation or no plantation, slave-owning is in itself an outrage on annum.
(v) humanity and a gross insult to civilisation. The common excuse in Africa is that 'domestic slavery' is not so heinous and abominable as plantation slavery. We hold both are abominable and objectionable. Both are slave-trading.' The evil is rampant on the entire dark continent and although the local African chiefs keep the white settlers in countenance, one cannot get over the culpability of the practice. Lord Cromer fully realised the evil and condemned it in no measured terms. 'In a certain African territory' he once wrote,' a white official recently boasted that in his capacity of *Middleman' he had made over £10,000 in five years by trafficking in 'domestic' slaves, the process being on the basis of a capital bonus for all labour supplied to the contractors.' The League of Nations has a distinct duty here. Let it apply itself to this task first and if it succeeds in rousing African conscience in this respect, it will have deserved well of the civilised world. Its other task-that of making war impossible-may be put off for the present."-Indian Daily News, 14-11-19. XXV. "It is undeniable that the sympathies of Englishmen as a whole, and with a few honourable exceptions, were with the South in the bitter struggle. Mr. Gladstone proved to be no wiser than his fellows......... They [ the Southern States ) had persuaded themves that slavery was the corner-stone which modern civilization would have to be based in all Christian countries, and were not only preaching openly that slavery was the right solution of the labour question in Europe as well as America, but had reopened the slave-trade with the African coast, and were landing cargoes of slaves in Charleston, although by their own law as well as that of Europe, the slave-trade was piracy. That the sympathies of Englishmen should have gone out towards these men as it did, is one of the most strange facts in modern history, and to Englishmen the most discreditable. Scotland was free from the reproach, as were the suffering workmen of Lancashire. It was the Metropolitan papers headed by the Times and the influential classes--the peers, great commoners and wealthy bankers and merchants of on ( 69 ) England-who allied themselves with the Southern chivalry as it was called and would have made war upon Mr. Lincoln and the Northern States had it been possible for them to plunge the country into the crime."-Statesman, June 7, 1896. XXVI. “The Americans of the United States and the Austradians and the (white).people of Africa have a fine spirit of intolerance of strangers whose complexions are not of the right sort. The Americans do not molest Indians from India but abhor negroes. They also object to the yellow races. The Australians dislike Indians.and Japs alike, while the Boers and South Africans think Indians poison."-Indian Daily News, April 16, 1913. " To the Frenchman alone the native seems something of a man and a brother-a view which to us is novel though probably true. To the English the native is a man but by no means a brother. To the German the native is a Caliban only amenable to the argument of the lash."-Africa, by the Duke of Mecklenburg. " The manner in which Christian nations often deal with non- Christian peoples is a disgrace to the Christian name. When the history.of our time is written there will be no more stained or damning pages than those which tell the story of how the Christian nation's dealt with Africa and Asia."-Dr. C. E. Jefferson in the Constructive Quarterly (Oxford Uuniversity Press) 1914. “If we are to impress the East it must be rather by our public than our private morality. We should like to be able to show that the European nations as a whole, in their collective action towards those of the Orient, are inspired by lofty motives and are actuated by that regard for altruism, justice and legality which are among the elements of Christian civilization. It must be admitted from this point of view our missionaries will find a good deal to explain away. The conduct of the Most Christian Powers during the past few years has borne a striking resemblance to that of robber bands descending upon an unarmed and helpless population of peasants. So far from respecting the rights of other nations, they have exhibited the most complete and cynical disregard for them, ( 68 ) They have in fact asserted the claim of the strong to prey upon the weak, and the utter impotence of all ethical considerations in the face of armed force with a crude nakedness which few Eastern inilitary conquerors could well have surpassed." Mr. Sydney Low in the Fortnightly Review (1912). An ex-Governor of German East Africa (fortunately now extinct). declared that "in Africa it is impossible to get on without cruelty."" -Quarterly Review (1918). XXVII. Polygamy only began to disappear among the Jews in the fifth century B. C. And so curious was the influence of the Old Testament that several of the Fathers could not bring: themselves to condemn it, and it was not officially suppressed by the Church until 1060 AD. Luther and the Reformers allowed it even later. Yet polygamy was one of the surest signs of a disdain of woman, and had been rejected by Greeks, Romans and barbarianslong before the Hebrews began to perceive its enormity "--Religion of Woman by J. McCabe. " in the whole feudal legislation women were placed in a much, lower legal position than in the Pagan Empire."-History of European Morals. (London : Watts). In the fifth century the Councils began to close the door of the ministry effectualy against women. Few deaconesses can be found. after that time. One by one the public functions were reserved for the clergy. Women were forbidden successively, to teach, to baptise, to preach, or take any order whatever......At the Council of Auxerré. in 578, the bishops forbade women, on account of their 'impurity,' to take the sacrament in their hands as men did."--The Religion of Woman by Joseph McCabe (London : Watts & Co., 1905). "Women have till a very recent period had grave reason to: complain of English legislation."--Democracy and Liberty (London: Longmans). “ Woman ( under English Common Law; in Boston in the middle of the nineteenth century ] could not hold any property, either earned or inherited......A woman, either married or unmarribe ) .ed, could hold no office of trust or power. She was not a person. She was not recognised as a citizen...... The status of a married woman was little better than that of a domestic servant. By the English Common Law her husband was her lord and master."- Mrs. Cady Stanton's History of Women's Suffrage. “The most bitter and outspoken enemies of women are found among clergymen and bishops of the Protestant religion." Woman's Bible by Mrs. Cady Stanton. - The social subordination of women stands out as an isolated fact in modern social institutions ; a solitary breach of what has become their fundamental law; a single relic of an old world of thought and practice exploded in everything else, but retained in the one thing of most universal interest."--The Subjection of Women, p. 36. It was just those who most radically abandoned Christianity -Owen, Holyoake and Mill--that were the most logical and ungrudging in their plea for woman. It was the Mary Wollstonecrafts, Harriet Martineaus, Frances Wrights, George Eliots, Helen Taylors and Annie Besants that distinguished themselves by fear- Hessness and unselfishness."-The Religion of Woman (London : Watts). “I conclude that the suggestion that gratitude due to the Church from women is little short of grotesque. Only a reckless perversion of their social history could suffer it to be entertained for a moment."-Ibid. In January 1920 the following conversation took place between Mr. Justice McCardie and Counsel in a Divorce case in England The Judge: Apparently, before the Act of 1857, a wife was regarded as a species of chattel and the jury had to award damages to the owner of the property. Do you say the theory that the wife is a chattel still exists ? Counsel : Yes, with some modifications. Judge: Then you call her a quasi-chattel! (Laughter). ." In all conscience there is enough to find fault with in the ( by ) Anglican Marriage Service. We do not wonder that many priests. cut it short, or tlfat many women have recourse to a Registrar's. Office rather than submit to its established ritual. Take the reasons given why it says matrimony was ordained-(1) for the propagation of children ; (2) for a remedy against sin and to avoid fornication ; and only as third, (3) for the mutual society, help, and comfort that the one ought to have of the other, both in prosperity and adversity. Take the repetition by the woman, or on her behalf, of the vows to 'serve and obey.' Take the antiquated references to Abraham and Sarah, to Isaac and Rebecca, and to Adam and Eve. Take the final exhortation suggested as a substitute for a sermon, and try to realize the meaning of its orientali precepts about the obedience, submission, and subjection of women to men......" The Nation, April 3, 1920. XXVIII. "Gradually Science has triumphed in civilized countries. It emerged in open conflict with religion in the seventeenth century grew stronger and wiser in the eighteenth century and achieved its final triumph by the close of the nineteenth, most wonderful of all arbitrary centenary divisions of Man's history." --Sir Harry Johnston. "Until the seventeenth century every mental discussion which philosophy pronounces to be essential to a legitimate research was. almost uniformly branded as a sin, and a large proportion of the most deadly intellectual vices were deliberately inculcated as virtues." -Lecky. Mr. Norman Angell in his well-known book entitled The Great Illusion says that the wider outlook in the West is the result of somewhat larger conceptions, our wider reading." Europe received her law from pagan Rome. It was the Church which put out the lights of knowledge and encouraged a static condition of human society. The advent of the new religion. [ Christianity 1 was an intellectual catastrophe. Independent thought, which has always been the dynamo of progress, was crushed. "Everything that the Church supported has been discrédited ;
( bug ) everything that it denounced as wrong has turned out to be right. It became the jailer of human reason,"-The Credentials of Faith by William Romaine Paterson. (London : Watts, 1918). "The application of exact knowledge in the different departments of human energy goes on increasing ; and it seems certain that the scientific spirit will gradually penetrate and inspire all forms of industrial and intellectual activity. What place will there then be for religion ?......Authority in religion is diminishing; and men are less inclined to accept ex cathedra pronouncements than they ever were before.”—Pioneer, January 24,1902. “Modern civilization will not allow itself to be hampered in its work by old religious institutions."'-Renan. "Western intellect is passing out of the stage in which the mass of it was content to accept its most essential beliefs upon the ipse dixit of a Priest."-Mr. F. C. O. Beaman I. C. "Christian apologists are finding themselves harder and harder pressed by rationalists, until they are forced to make desperate efforts to reconcile the apparent contradictions and inconsistencies which abound in the Scriptures." -Bowerman. "It has been the experience of English schools that when religion comes in at the front door, education goes out at the backdoor."- Capital (1913). XXIX. " It is now clear to all students of the Bible that the first and second chapters of Genesis contain two narratives of the creation, side by side, differing from each other in almost every particular of time, place and order."-Dean Stanley (1915). “You can hardly exaggerate the disaster it has been to the education of children that they have been taught to associate with religion, things about the Creation, the Flood, and the beginnings of our race which it was infallibly certain, when they grew up to read the literature of their time they would find false and would reject as alien to the whole trend of the philosophy, science and history of their time."-Bishop Gore, Bashop of Oxford (1917). 1 bobo Bishop Gore again ... The old Protestant orthodoxy stood by the sole and final authority of the Bible as the infallible word of God. But it is exactly this position which modern knowledge is making more and more impossible."-Orders and Unity, p. 191. "Of the two doctrines, one of which maintains that Jesus Christ is God, and the other that he was a man like to ourselves, we hold here the latter. The first predicates the miraculous. It is not according to reason that the absolute God, and a man who lived and died as we live and die, should form one person......"-Jesus and Modern Thought, by the Rev. Stopford Brooke (London: Philip Green, 1894). At the Church Congress held at Bristol on October 15,1903, the Bishop of Winchester said that the clergy saw now much more clearly than a century ago that the theology of the Old Testament must be handled with a strictly historical method. The morality of the Old Testament was now recognised in the light of modern research as presenting no final or perfect standard." The imperfect condition of Israelitish morality was faithfully reflected in the Old Testament by the possession of slaves, the practice of polygamy, retaliatory murder, wars of extermination against the heathen and imprecatory denunciations. In the course of some discussion the Dean of Canterbury stated that " ere was a very large school of critics, and he was afraid, the dominant school in this country [ England ] and in Germany, practically denying the historical character of a great part of the Old Testament." The Rev. Professor Sanday who dealt exclusively with the Gospels observed that in the treatment of the Gospel narrative "there was a general tendency to the denial of the Virgin Birth, to the restriction of miracles to the miracles of healing, and to the adoption of some form of vision-theory of the Resurrection." He added :-"Even the teaching of our Lord Himself was not spared." "No section of the Church that counts for much . now denies the facts of geology, and Darwinism is no longer regarded as the foe of the Christian faith. A great many of the clergy have accepted do ( ba ) the principle of criticism, and are prepared to apply it with some boldness at least to the Old Testament...... Meanwhile, especially among younger men and women of fair education there is a widespread unsettlement and uneasiness. There is a vague feeling that the old orthodoxy is impossible ; people suspect that much that was once commonly believed is no longer tenable."--"Contentio Veritatis issued by six Oxford Tutors in 1903. "In the quarterly lesson book issued for the use of the Congregational Sunday Schools of Chicago, the children are taught that the Biblical account of the Creation is neither scientific nor historical, that the story of the fall is an allegory rather than a fact, that there is no scientific ground for accepting the statements in Genesis as to the age of Methuselah, and so forth and so forth." The Review of Reviews ( Nov. 1901). " The theory of dogmatic Christianity is that man has but one brief life between the two eternities and then goes to 'do nothing for ever and ever' in Heaven or to be eternally tormented in Hell. The thinking world takes a broader view of the mystery of Life and Death to-day, but 'Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again he cannot see the Kingdom of God' has not yet been so widely accepted as to permit the theory of reincarnation to be adopted as part of the orthodox Christian creed."-"Dagonet" in the Referee (1913). "The conception of God has changed, is changing and will change. The Prussian conception of God and also of the Jews of the Dispersion is that of a tribal deity. The English National Anthem assumes that the Most High is British in sympathy and hostile to all aliens opposed to the King of England...... For many .conturies religion acted as a dictatorial and arbitrary mistress of society and of the individual. Severe moral discipline, obedience to prohibitions, rules, regulations, and the performance of ceremonies and rites imposed stringent laws on the use men made of their leisure and working time and of the money they earned or acquired All is changed in our day. Practically everybody is now his own (do) high priest, and looks into the Infinite for himself-unless he is a son of the Chutch."-"Vanoc" in the Referee. (1914) "Intelligent Christians no longer listened as their fathers had to Old Testament stories which seemed to them incredible or even demoralising. They know that inspiration was no longer allowed by scholars to have any influence on interpretation, could not establish the truth of any statement as against historical science and could not authorise a doctrine which was against the reason and conscience of Christian men...... The modern Christian ignored inspiration and canonicity and, taking the books on their merits, saw that they were very unequal, and that some, or parts of some, seemed far below the level of the best profane literature."--Report of Canon Henson's sermon in Westminster Abbey on March 4, 1904, published in the Times Weekly Edition, 11-3-04. "It would be idle to deny that at this moment the credit of the Scriptures is seriously shaken in the public mind, nor can it be reasonably doubted that the tendencies in popular life at present prevailing are, in the main, hostile to the Christian tradition. Canon Hensly Henson in the Contemporary Review (1904): The Statesman ( Weekly Edition, April 14, 1904 ) said that Lørd Hugh Cecil told the House of Commons "in franker words. than it often hears, that Christianity was at that very moment rapidly declining in England...... The tenets of Christianity have become matters of doubt, and Christian morality, so far as it survives, does so by force of habit and not by force of faith. That this is in the main a fairly accurate description of the state of mind in England at the present time no one can honestly deny." “ There is a conflict between Church and State, and although the Church has to fight the battle from Christian teaching, although the Church has to bear the burden of advancing civilization, yet the world scoffs at it for its antiquated ideas_and the Church is despised."-The Rev. W. K. Firminger, reported in the Statesman, July 21, 1908. “ The truth of the Gospel history &s now more widely doubted in ( a ) . Europe than at any time since the conversion of Constantine. Every thinking person who has been brought up a Christian and desires to remain a Christian, yet who knows anything of what is passing in the world, is looking to be told on what evidence the New Testament claims to be received. The state of opinion proves of itself that the arguments hitherto offered produce no convic-- tion."-Froude's Short Studies on Great, Subjects. " In all directions Nature was investigated, in all directions new methods of examination were yielding unexpected and beautiful results. On the ruins of its ivy-grown cathedrals Eccleciasticism, surprised and blinded by the breaking day, sat solemnly blinking at the light and life about it, absorbed in the recollection of the night that had passed, dreaming of new phantoms and delusions in its wished-for return, and vindictively striking its talons at any derisive assailant who incautiously approached too near."--The Intellectual Development of Europe. (Draper). It is pleasant to record fresh recognition on the part of a church body of the needs of the hour. The Federal Council of Churches in America, at its special meeting held in Cleveland last week, came out for industrial and social reform, which only a few years ago would have been deemed beyond the scope and purpose of any Church gathering ...... On the international side the Council favours a League of Nations, equality of race treatment and the adoption of a new Oriental policy for the United States so as tobring our policy in line with our preachments. It is a fine liberal programme but best of all it shows that after the madness of war the Church is beginning to see that it must act speedily if it is not to be included among the wreckage of the struggle." -The Nation (New York) 17-5-19. Professor Gwatkin of Cambridge said in 1901:-" The field of battle had long been widening. Theological truth was not the whole truth. Science and history were God's words as well as scripture, and science claimed recognition from the seventeenth century onwards. Platonists were the precursors of newer and higher thought ( ৯২ ) - First astronomy, then geology, then the idea of evolution widened immeasurably our idea of God and now the critical study of history . was beginning to throw new light on the methods of Civilization.'' A special prayer meeting was held in the Queen's Hall, London, in 1911 in connection with the coronation of King George V. It was conducted by an archbishop, five bishops and leading representatives of Anglican and Free Churches. The following are extracts from the circular convening the meeting " There is sore need of a revival of true religion in our midst...... Amongst other signs of irreligion at the present time many deeply regret the lessening of reverence for Holy Scripture ; the waning of a due observance of the Lord's Day; the sad prevalence of intemperance, gambling and impurity; and the inordinate love of riches and pleasure.” (The Review of Reviews, June 1911). "The cause of religion is not flourishing, either in England or in the world, to-day. From all that we can see of things at home, and from all that we can hear of the armies abroad, it seems that the majority of men are occupying themselves very little with thoughts of religion."-The Church Times, March 9,1917. Dr. Gilbert Murray, Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford, says :-" Probably throughout History the worst things ever done in the world on a large scale by decent people have been done in the name of religion, and I do not think that has entirely ceased to be true at the present day. All the Middle Ages held the strange and, to our judgment, the obviously insane belief that the normal result of religious error was eternal punishment...... The record of early Christian and medieval persecutions which were the direct result of that one confident religious error comes curiously near to one's conception of the wickedness of the damned."-Four Stages of Greek Religion, p. 22. The Rev. Dr. Griffith Jones, speaking at the London City Temple in April 1917 is stated to have publicly repudiated his former belief "in which most of us," he says, " were brought up," that every man's eternal destiny is settled by "whatever position he ( నరి was in at the moment of death." (See the London Times, April 9,1917). Dr. McTaggart says in Some Dogmas of Religiort that "if the mass of Englishmen ceased to believe in any religion, many of them would lose much happiness by ceasing to believe in heaven, but many of them would gain much happiness by ceasing to believe in hell.” (Quoted by Mr. R. F. Johnston in his Letters to a Missionary ; London. Watts & Co., 1918). Dr. J. B. Pratt, who is an erninent authority on religious psychology is quoted by Mr. Johnston in his most poignant Letters . to a Missionary as saying that "the most noticeable fact about the Christian doctrine of hell at the present time is that belief in it is rapidly disappearing...... For a very large number of Christian people, who are in other respects quite orthodox, hell has become a kind of joke." "Some few years ago the Encyclopædia Biblica was issued, the purpose of which work was to ascertain the real facts and to state them. This book is the work of some of the greatest of the world's Biblical students, and it sums up, supported by a learning, the conclusions of modern criticism. A glance at the list of contributors will show the large number of scholary churchmen who have abandoned the theory of the literal truth of the Bible. We learn from these volumes that the creation story originated in a stock of primitive myths common to the Semitic races, and is almost identical with the Babylonian myth ; that the very existence of the Old Testament patriarchs is uncertain ; that the whole book of Genesis is not history, but a narrative based on older records, long since lost ; that the story of Joseph was compiled in the seventh century B. C. ; that the book of Exodus is a legend, that it is doubtful whether Moses is the name of an individual or of a clan ; that the alleged origin of the Ten Commandments is purely traditional ; that it is very doubtful whether David wrote any of the Psalms; that everything in the Gospels is uncertain ; that we do not know when Jesus was born, when he died, or who mass of ( 18 ) no was his father, that the supposed virgin birth has no evidence in its favour ; that it is impossible to separate the truth from doubtful legend and symbolical embroidery in any of the Gospels ; that the accounts of the Resurrection exhibit contraditions of the most glaring kind ; that the view that the four gospels bearing the names of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were written by them and appeared thirty or forty years after the death of Jesus can longer be maintained, nor can they be regarded 24 credible narratives; that the genuinchess of the Pauline Epistles is far from clear. These and a hundred other conclusions can be found in the Encyclopædia Biblica, wherein eminent Christian scholars proclaim results quite contrary to the usual orthodox teachings."- Some Religious Terms Simply Defined, by E. L. Marsden (London: *Watts & Co, 1914). Canon Peter Green is quoted verbatim in the London Literary Guide (Jannuary, 1920) as saying :-" For the Church of England I have scarcely any hope. I do not fear in the least for the future of religion--men will always believe in God and turn to him --- but that anything approaching the organization of established religion is likely to survive is a very doubtful thing." Opinion of Mr. Robert Keable, who accompanied the Basuto labour battalion to France, quoted in the Nation ( April 5. 1919): " In the searchlight of this war, of religious failures in history it would be hard to find one more tragic and complete than the failure of the Established Church of England.” The Nation (April 5, 1919) reviews a book entitled "Faith of the Apostle's Creed" by Professor J. F. Bethune-Baker D. D. (London: Macmillan). The Professor says very plainly that there is a resolute determination in the Church itself-far more widespread than is generally known that such beliefs as the birth of our Lord from a Virgin, and His resurrection in the body which was laid in the tomb, shall not be treated as of the essence of the Faith of a Christian." The writer on "Indian Affairs' in the Times, says--"Modern (se) Christianity, after having had a hearing, has been decided against, and the habits associated with modern Christianity seem to the Indians to tend towards demoralization among tropical races." (The Times, June 1894). Dr. Percy Gardner a learned theologian remarks on miracles in his Historic View of the New Testament : “ If we can show that they rest on no sufficient evidence, and, further, that there was every probability that, whether actual or not, they would be reported, then we do, according to the canons de history, dismiss them from objective existence." Regarding prophecies he says: :-"A careful critical examination of the circumstances of a past prophecy which is supposed to have met its fulfilment nearly always deprives it of its superhuman character, and leaves it either without foundation or easily explicable.” ADDENDUM.--Pp. 36-37 : Mr. Justice Darling, in passing judgment in the breach of promise case of Gamble vs. Sales remarked : " A great many people now regarded marriage as a mere trifle, and bigamy was only a little more serious; but he did not take that view. Marriage in this country was still nominally a contract for life of two parties. Of course, he knew that that was not actually the case, when he thought of another department of that building, and in a short time, if it was not a contract for a year, he thought that was about as much as it would be."-Report reproduced in the Indian Daily News, April 24, 1920.
