Professor of Bauddha Darshana, Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya Banaras Hindu University SANSKRIT GRANTHA No. 5 Publisher AYODHYA PRASAD GOYALIYA SECY. BHARATIYA JNANAPITHA DURGAKUND ROAD, BANARAS CITY. Founded in Falguna Krishna 9, -Vir Sam. 2470 All Rights Reserved Vikram Samvat 2000 18th Feb, 1944, N प्रास्ताविकं किञ्चित् .
INTRODUCTION Ratnainañjūşã is a work 011 Sanskrit metres written by an old Jain author, whose name and personal liistory are wholly unknown. The work consists of Sūtras and contains 8 Adhyayas like Pingala's Chandas Šāstra. The treatment also shows great similarity with and influence of Pingala's work. Yet in some respects Ratnamaſ jūşū materially differs froin Pignala. The author, being a Jain, naturally drops thc Vedic metres. As a matter of fact, there is no indication in the Sūtras themselres about the religion of their author. Yet the fact that their conimentator is a Jain and that some of the metres defined in then are known only to the great Jaia author Henacandra, but not to Pingla or Kedāra, makes it almost certain that the author of the Sūtras was very likely a Jain. The name of the commentator is also unknown. He was a Jain as is clear from the introductory stanza. Most of the illustrations seem to have been composed by the commenlator himself. About 40 out of a total of 85 illustrations contain the name of the inetre artificially introduced by way of Mudră. This is a pretty clear indication of their being composed for the occasion itseli. It is however possible that lie inay have quoted from other sources, especially in those cases where the stanzas do not contain the name of the metre even when it was possible to introduec it, At 2. 4, he has quoted from the Sakuntala (I. 33) and at 6, 27 from Bhāsa's Pratijñāyaugandharāyaṇa (II 3). The other possible quotations may be 3. 7 (Karņa Vaikartana); 4.20.2 (devair vrtah senāpatih); 5. 5 (senāpatiputri); 5. 20; 5. 28; 5. 34 (ketumān); 6. 12; 6. 21; 6. 29 (Vararuci announcing himself to Nanda through the doorkeeper); 7. 22; 7. 32 (praise of Skanda) and 7. 33. The following stanzas contains a clear reference to Jain religion : 2. 5, 15; 3. 16 ; 4. 9; 5. 8, 17, 29, 30; 6.3, 6, 10, 13, 14; 7. 26, 27, 30. In 9 of these, the name of the inetre is 110€ introduced and they were probably not composed for the purpose of mere illustration. About 25 of the illustrations contain references to the ve (ii) Sānuudrika and in most of these the name of the metre is introduced artificially, suggesting that they were probably composed by the CO2.17. citator himself. The commentator has an occasion to refer to the author of the text on three or four occasians, but in no place does he mentior his naine. On 4.1, he cails liin an ucarja nierely. is said above Rainamaljūşā broadly follows the plan of Pingala and distributes the same material (except Verlic metres) over 8 Arlliyaya: as follows: In the first Adhyaya, le explains the symbols and technical terms employed by himn in this book. In the second, le defines the Āryā (1-13) the Gīti 14) the Aryā Gīti (15), the Gaiitaka (16) and then the Upacitraka group of the Ardhasama Varna l'rttaş. He devotes the third Adhyaya to the Vaitaliya (1.9) and the Mātrāsamaka groups of the Mātrā Vittas (10-17), giving at the end Gītyāryā, liśikha and Cũlikā (18-20) just like Pingala ( 4.48-52 ), but concluding the chapter with Nrtyagati and Natacaraṇa, both of which are pure Mātrā l'ritas. These last two are defined, so far as I know, only by the great Jain writer Hemacandra and not by any one else. In the fourth Adhyaya the three groups of the Vişama Tarna lyttas, namely the Udgatā (1-6), the Dăinārārā or the Padacaturārdhiva (7-12) and the Anuştubh Vaktra (11-20) groups are defined and illustrated. See the introductory note to Adhyaya Il. In Adhyayas five to seren, all the Varna Vittas are defined and illustrated. Like Piügala, our author begins with the Gāyatri class whose metres contain 6 letters in each of their four lines, neglecting the metres of the lower classes i.e, Uktā, Atyuktā, Madhyā, Pratişthū and Supratiştha altogether. See 110:e on Adhyaya 1, Sūtras 20-24. At the beginning of the fifth Adhyaya, our author broadly divides all these Varna Vrlias under three heads naniely Samāna, Pramāņa and Vitāna. The inetres actually defined in Adhyayas 5 to 7. come under the third head-j.e., Vitāna. As explained in my note on 5. 1-12, our author stands alone in thus dividing the Varna Vrttas of all the 21 classes. Pingala, and following liin, all the other writers, including the Jaina Hemacandra, restrict this threefold division to metres of the Anuştubh class alone and mention it on the first occasion when they treat of the metres of the Anuştubh class i.e., at the cominencement of the Vişama Vittas which include the Anuştubh Vaktra group. - Our author defines about 85 111) Varna Vilias belonging 11) the 21 classes iron: Gājiltri i ltkļi Out of these, not less than 21 are unknown to lingala and Kedūra, but knowil only to the Jain tradition represented by Hlema andra, On the other hand, about 16 metres defined by lingala are dropped in the Ratianajūş. But the most important point of difference betweeli Pirgala and Ratnamaŭjīşa is the ti-e oi simbols. Pingria has devize S Trikas (groups of three letters ) for the purpose vi scanning a metrical line of the Varna Vritas. He has given them eight symbols consisting of eight corisonants. Our author has retained the Trikas but changed their symbols compietely. He has put fossili a double system of symbols, one consisting of consonants and another of vowels alone. He has also added 4 Dvikas (groups of two letters) to the 8 Trikas, giving them the symbols consisting of the ' semirowels ya, ra, la, and i'll He cmploys the symbols 1a, and ina, (i, e. consonanis il auci in) ior short and long letters respectively; but hcre le lias clearly the nagana and the iragana oi I'ingia in ius mind. Like ringla, he too mcntions only the Caturnira group among the Mātrā Gañas, This group alone is employed in d:fining the Mātrā Vittas. Really speaking, the number of lātrā Vritas ill Sanskrit is very restricted and in the only the Caturnātra grou;)s are prescribed as explained in my introductory note to the second Adhyaya. Tlie Caturnātra group is of fire kinds according as short and long letters in different order are employed in them Three of them are already included in the Trikas whose symbols are also used for them. Of the remaining two, one is a Drika, while the other has no special symbol to represent it and is prescribed with the help of two symbols by our author. In preparing the edition of tlie Ratnamañjūşă with the Bhüşya LWO manuscripts called A and B hare been used. Both of them are from the Governinent Oriental Library, Mysore. The first i.e., A is No. 871, while the second i.e., B is No. 1025. Both are written in the Kannada characters and on palm leaves. A as well as B, both 25 folios each the size of which is respsctively 101 x 2 and 134 x 13 inches. Their pagesr espectively contain 9 and 7 lines with about 52 and 71 letters in a line. Both the mss, are incoinplete. A contains the greater part of the eighth chapter while B contains it only upto the end of the 15th Sūtra of it. A breaks off in the Bhāsya on the 17th Sūtra but gives at the end soine 11 - (iv) stanzas which look like a quotation from some other work written out by the scribe himself. They naturally bear on some of the 6 Pratyayas. In st, 11 an author called Punnāgacandra is inentioned as the author of the Khandameru Praştāra of the l'arna Vittas. Both the manuscripts agree in frequently writing short letters for long and rarely also long letters for short ones. The mistakes are generally obvious. Yet I have indicated all of them as they are; in the following edition putting (within brackets) the correct letter or letters, immediately after the wrong ones. When a letter is dropped, it is indicated by ineans of a plus + sign placed behind the letter which is then put within the brackets. I feel greatly obliged to the Bhāratīya Jūāpapitha, Kashi and Dr, H. L. NOTE::- In the craphical representation. I stunts for a sicurt letter an Stor a long ne] ADHYAYA I. Sūtras 1-10: These explain the Samjìās or the technical terms employed by our author to represent the eight Akşıra Ganas or groups of 3 letters each, first employed for scanning a line of Varna Vittas by Pingala. Our author uses a double set of these teris one consisting of consonants and another of vowels alone. The last vowel and the last consonant in each of the fi:st cight Sītras stand for the metrical group of short and long letters represented by the word of which the Sūira consists. Thus or 31 stands for a group of three long letters and so on (see Sütras 9 and 10). Similarly, the 2nd consonant in each of the first four Sūtras and the 1st consonant in each of the first two Sūtras stand for a metrical group of short and long letters which is represented by that part of the Sülra which ends with that consonant, Thus I stands for a group of two long letters and F stands for a single long letter (see Sūtra 10 and commentary). The following is a full list of such terins with their equivalents employed by Pingala wherever possible: 31 = SSS=# of Pingala Q = ISS = 7 त् or औ= SIS =र् = IIS = 2=SSI = 2 a=ISI = ऋ= SII = ह् or &=IIT = 7 यू =SS; (=IS; <= =SI; Q=II; = S=7, of Pingala; I=I= of Pingala, The last two symbols, namely those for single long and short letters, clearly show the influence of Pingala's Hive and from representing all long and all short letters respectively. 6 क् or - or 03 प् or RL or for por = SII , ( 42 ) S, 11:-Eren a short letter (7) is treated as a long one (#) when i: is follored lija conjunct consonant (im). According to the commentator, the word sift shows that the rule is optional, solliat sometimes, ille short letter does not become long eren wlieni followed by a conjunct consonant, It also suggests that a long letter is ordinarily equal to two short ones. S. 12:- At the ciid of a line, a short letter is considered as equal to a long one metrically, S. 13:This lovverer, is not applicable to short letters standing at the end of odd lines of the Aryã and such other metres. The illustration No. I given for Sūtra No 11 (cleren) serves also for this rule, says tlie conimentator; for, the short tetter o occurring at the end of the 3rd line of the stanza which is in the Aryā inetre is not to be considered as long. S. 14:--The letters a, a, f, at etc, respectively represent the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. This is an important innovation introduced by our author. Earlier and later writers employ popular terms signifying a definite number such as sainudra standing for 4, nayana standing for 2 and so on. S. 15-16:-Sometimes the letter of is added to this letter &, a1, fe etc. (thus que op, for etc.) as a mere ornamental appendage; but this is not always done. S. 18–19-These two Sūtras refer to the Yati, which ought to be agreeable to the ear. It always occurs at the end of a line, but sometimes even in its middle. I am unable to understand fully these two Sūtras with their Bhāşya, It is quite likely that what is slown as the Bhāṣva by my manuscripts is a part of the Sūtras theinselves, here. For a further exposition of the rules about Yati, see Halāyudha, on Pingala's Cliandas, 6.1 (N. S. P. 3rd edition, PP. 100-103). S. 20-24:-These 4 Sūtras enumerate the broad divisions of the Varņa Vịttas, beginning with Gāyatrī having 6 letters in each of its four lines and ending with Utkrli having 26 letters in each of its four lines. It deserves to be noted that our author does not define the earlier classes of metres, i.e, those that contain froin 1 Bo 5' letters in each of their four lines. In this he follows Pingala and Jayadeva. Even Bharata enumerates these five classes only, ( 43 ) under the Prākrta metres in ch. 36 (but not under Sanskrit metres in ch. 16) meaning thereby that they were not current in Sanskrit poetry as a rule. Prākrta metricians, who also write on the Varna Vrttas seem to have first introduced and illustrated then. Thus l'irahānka, and probably also Svayambhū, define these five classes amorg the Varna Vittas. They are then followed by Kedāra and Hemacandra, by whose time their definition seems to have already come in rogue. S. 25:--This Sūtra mentions a special terin namely I for a Mātrā Gaņa of four Mātrās. The Mātrā Gaņas are needed for scanning the Mātrā Vittas like the Aryā. In making use of only one Mātrā Gaņa, nainely, the Caturinātra, our author again closely follows Pingala. As a matter of fact, all writers prosody including Hemacandra have not made use of any other Mātrā Gana in defining the Sanskrit Mātrā Vittas. For this and the next Sutra, compare Pingala, 4, 12-13, S. 26:—This Sūtra gives the five different kinds (f the Caturmatra Gaạis in view of the short or long letters that may be employed in them. They are:- =SS; = II 5; q=ISI; # - SII; and + $=1,111. Three of these are already noticed among the 8 Akşara Gaņas, since they contain three letters each. The first and the last are neir, since they contain 2 and 4 letters respectively, ADHYAYA II. Pingala has defined the Aryā group and the other Mātrā Vittas in one chapter viz. tlie 4th. Really speaking, Sanskrit Mātrā Vittas consist of three main groups, namely the Aryā group, the Vaitālīya group and the Mātrāsamaka group. Out of these, the Aryā group and the Mātrāsaniaka group are groups of pure Mātrā Vịttas, where a definite number of Mātrā Gaņas, kept separate froin each other by the avoidance of a long letter at their junction, is required. The third Group. is a group of metres which are called Mātrā Výttas, because in them a defnite number of Mātrās, and not letters are required to be employed in a line, These Mātrās, whatever their, number, are not rigidly divided into a number of definite groups as in the case of the Aryā and the Mātrāsamaka. Only, there are ( 44 ) restrictions about the introduction or avoidance of sliort and long letters for representing a particular Mātrā or Mitics. Out of the three groups tlie Ary group consists of metres of two lines wliile ile laitūlīva group consists of metres of four lines, oul of which the 1st rcseinbles the 3rl and ilie 2nd resembles llie 41h. Tliey are the Matrā lintas of the Ardhasama type. The third groll i, e., the Mātrāsainaka group, on the other hand, contains metres cach of which consists of 4 lines of the same type and length. Our author has separated thc last two groups (of metres of four lines eachi) from the first group and treated them in the third Adhyāya. On the other hand, he has picked out the group of the Ardhasania l'arşı lritas beginning willi Cpacitraka from its proper place in the midst of the larņa litlas-In Pingala, they are treated after the lişana and before the Sama Vrtas of four lines cach—and tacked it on to the Aryā group in Edliyāya second. Evidently he has done this because in both these groups, the full hall of a stanza. whether it consists of one line or of two, has to be defined, whereas, in all other metres, including eren tine Vaithilya group, only one jourth of a stanza is required to be defined, together with a few peculiarities of the odd or the even lines in the case of the Ardha sana Nitril Virtaa, other thing's being cominon to all the four lines. This in the 2nd chapter of our book, the Adlikārasītra is 16 dhe, while that in cliapters 3 to 7 it is pide, S. 2-3:-111 each half of the Arya, there are seven (7) Caturmītra Ganas ( 7:) and one half nore; anorguliese seven, only. those which occupy even places (i.c.,) 2nd, 41h and 6th can be of 3 (ISI) type, but those in odd places inust never be so. See for the same rules l'ingala. 4. 14-15. S. 4-8:-The 6th Caturmätra in the first half is eillier of the 3 (ISI) type or of the fa (I,111) type. If it is the latter, a new word wust be coinmenced with the 2nı Mātrā, the earlier worsi belng finished with the 1st. If the 7th Caturmätra (a) be of the ft (IIII) type, a fresli word must be commenced with the very first Matrā, the çarlier word being compleled with the last Mātrā of the 6th Catus mātra Gaņa, This same rule holds good in the case of the 5th Caturmātra Gaņa (59) in the second half of the Aryā ( 45 ) (qui). If it is of the fa (1,111) type, a fresh word must be com menced with its very first Mātrā. In the second half of the Arya the 6th Gaņa (ar) is not a Caturmūtra, but consists only of a single short letter (a ga). For all these rules, compare Pingala, 4. 16-21. S. 9-10:- That Aryū is called Pathyā, whose odd lines i, e., 1st and 3rd consist of three Caturinātra Gaņas only. That which is not so is called Vipulā. These two Sūtras which resemble Pingala 4. 22-23 furnish an interesting comnientary on the controversy about the number of lines in the Aryā metre. According to these rules, if a word is finished with the ird Caturmātra in the halves of the Āryā, the Yati is naturally introduced there and the half becomes automatically divided into two lines. In such cases, i. e., where both the lialves are thus divided into two lines each, the Aryī must be considered as a mette of four lines. But if thie end of the 3rd Caturmātra does not synchronise with also the end of a word in either or both the halves of the Aryā, the Yati is not introduced at the end of the 3rd Caturnātra, since the word, which is commenced but not finished in it, must be completed before a metrical pause is allowed. It is in such cases, where a natural Yati or metrical pause is not introduced at the end of the 3rd Caturmātra owing to the incomplete ulterance of a word, that the halves of the Aryū are not Felt as divisible into two lines each and consequentlyĀryā is felt and therefore regarded as a metre of two lines. Thus then the Pathyā Āryā is a metre of 4 aud Vipula Arya a inetre of 2 lines. But since there is no conipulsion about the finishing of a word at the end of the 3rd Caturinātra, the Aryā on the whole, has been regarded as a metre of two halves i, e., two lines, by the metricians, like Pingala and others. It is however, noteworthy that commentators usually regard Pathyā to be the normal type and Vipulā to be the exceptional ane. They therefore, regard Vipulā ( and not Pathyā) to be of three kinds i e. Mukha, Jaghana and Ubhaya Vipulā, according as the characteristic of the unfinished word is found existing in the 1st or the 2nd or boil the halves, See Halāyudha on Pingala, 4-23. Both Pirgala and our author are silent about these divisions of Vipulā, showing thereby. that perhaps by their time the public opinion had definitely swung in favour of the view which regarded the Arya Beatre of four lines.
( 46 ) S. 11–13:- An Aryā is called Capalā when the groups & (SIS), 5 (TSS), 7 (I) and sit (SIS) follow in succession after the 2nd Matrā of the 1st Caturinātrā ( nå); or in other words as it is put by Pingala, 42, when the 2nd and the 4th Caturmātras in each half are both preceded and followed by a long letter each, and are themselves of the 4 or 5 type (ISI) i.e., the out of Pingala. If this characteristic is found in the 1st halſ, the Aryū is called Mukha Capalā; if in the 2nd, it is called Jaghana Capalā; if in both,' it is called Maha Capalā. See Pingala, .4. 25-26. The last variety is not mentioned by our autlior expressly, nor by the commentator. Each of these three kinds of Capalū are possible in Pathyā as well as in the three Vipulās. Thus we have 4x3+4= 16 varicties of Āryā; see Halāyudha on Pingala, 4. 20 (N. S. P. 3rd edition, p. 51). S. 14:-If in the second half of the Aryā, the 6th (mm) Gana is a full Caturmātra and does not consist of a single short letter, or in other words, if the 2nd half is similar to the 1st, the Aryā is called Giti; cf. Pingala, 4.28. In this Sūtra, the words at a are to be supplied from Sūtra 13. All the rules applicable to the 6th Caturmālra, mentioned above in Sūtras 4 and 5 are also applicable here as the commentator reminds us. S. 15:-1f the 8th Gaņa (FT) in the Gīti is a ful? Caturmätra (and not a lialf one), the same is called Aryāgīti. In this Sūtra, the words quieta au are to be supplied from the last Sūtra, so that S. 15 literally means 'If the 6th and also the 8th Gaņas are full Caturmītras the Aryā is called Aryāgīti'. Compare Pingala, 4. 31. Other metres derived from the Aryā, like Upagīti and Udgili (compare Pingala 4. 28, 29) are not mentioned by our author nor by his commentator, and strangely enough, the section on Aryā is brought to a conclusion with the Galitaka which has no connection with the Aryā nor is it a metre of two lines or halves. The only possible connecting link between the Āryā and the Galitaka is that the lines of both are made up of a definite number of the Caturmātra Gaņas. None of the Mātrā Vịttas from the Vaitālīya group have their fines thus composed. Really speaking, Galitaka is not a Sanskrit metre; at least it is not known as a Sanskrit metre to older "Sanskrit' metricians. Even Hemacandra who first mentions it, counts it among the Prakrit metres; besides, according ( 47 ) to lim Galitaka is rather a classnanie of Prakrit 11ctres of a particular type. See Hemacandra, Chandonušāsana (JBBR.IS. 1943) IV. 17 ff. But the Prakrit merte which exactly corresponds to our Galitaka is Lalitā of Virahānka, Vșttajātisamuccaya ( JBBRAS. 1929) IV. 60. In any case, it is very dillicult to guess the reason1 for which the Galitaka is regarded as a Sanskrit inetre and further why it is defined at this place. The author, indeed, must have felt the incongruity of this metre coming under the 'adlikāra' of cardlie' and so he has added the word pralipādan in its definition, S 16=A Galitaka stanza has four lines, each containing five and a half Caturnātras of any kind. The illustration by the commentator looks like a quotation. Hereafter, in Sūtras 17–18, the author defines the Ardlaşama Varņa Vịttas for reasons suggested above in the introductory note to this chapter. Each definition is made up of a pair of groups of symbols, the first of which gives the composition of odd lines, while the 2nd gives that of the even ones. I shall explain the definitions graphically as well as by giving the euqivalent Akşara Gaņas according to Pingala's system since this is very generally known. In showing the Gañas, I shall use full letters in the place of consonants for the sake of convenience. This Adhyâya' defines the Sanskrit Mātrā Vșttas belonging to the Vaitalīya and the Mātrāsamaka groups. Every metre of these . ( 49 ) groups consists of four lines, though in the case of the former group, the lines are not all of the same kind and length. So tlie author begins with the Adlikāra Sūtra pode and gives the definition of a single line, iientioning at the same time the partial difference in the structure of some, wherever it exists. S. 2-4:---These Sūtras give the composition of the concluding portion of all the lines of \'aitālīya, Alpacchiandasika and Apātalikā. It is respectively 7, 3* (SI, SIS); 7,5 (SI, ISS); and a, 5 (SIS, ISS). The inss, do 110t contain the illustration of Vaitālīya and the definition nf Apālalikā. I have reconstructed the latter by pure guesswork. Sec Pingaia, 4. 32-34. S. 5 and 6:-These two Sūtras give the composition of the remaining portion of the lines, hoth odd and even, of the three metres to which this portion is comnion. Thus Sūtra 5 lays down that the odd lines shall liave 6 Mātrās (* :-7 is a short letter and also 1 Mātrā) in it. But these short letters or Mātrās inust always be used in pairs, and not singly or in groups of 3 or 5. In effect this restriction means that the 2nd and 3rd, 4th and 5th and 6th and 71h Mātrās at the commencement of a line must not be combined into a long letter. Sūtra 6 enjoins that the even lines shall have 8 short letters or Mātrās in this portion at the commencement of the lines of these metres. But in any case 8 short letters in succession shall not be employed there. According to Pingala, 6 short letters in succession are to be avoided in the case of the even lines, and Kedāra agrees with Pingala. The word in the last Sūtra is also to be understood here, so that the restriction equally applies to all lines whether odd or even. See Pingala, 4. 34-36. S. 7:-Supply dangle from S. 2, hd from S. 5 and yet: from S. 6 in this Sūtra. So that it means: If in this porton, a long letter () occurs after the 3rd Mātrā (fqw: ) in the even lines, so as to combine the 4th and the 5th Mātrās, a Vaitālīya is called Prācyavříti. See Pingala, 4. 37, whose wording is slightly different. S. 8:-A Vaitālīya is called Udīcyavịtti, when a long letter is employed after the 1st Mātrā (FT) in the odd lines. Supply Garcia (S. 2), ($. 5) and (S. 7) in this Sūira lo complete the sense, Compare Pingala, 4. 38. 7 ( 50 ) S. 9:-If both the characteristics mentioned in S. 7 and 8 are simultaneously found in a l'aitāliya, it is called L'ravřttaka. See Pingala, 4. 39. S. 10–17:--These 8 Sūtras define the six metres belonging to the Mātrāsamaka group. For all these see Pingala, 4. 42–47. The order in which these six are definert is different with different authors according to their own convenience. S. 10-12:-There are four (1) Caurmātra groups (= a Caturmātra group; sec above I. 25 ) in each of the four lines of thic Mātrāsamaka. Out of these four, the first (FTI) înust not be of the = (TSI) type and the third (ft) must be of the (IIS) type, The conditition about the 1st Caturmātra is actually mentioned by our author though it seems to be implied by Pingala and others. Pingala's commentator Halayuılha supplies statut GT 7 2174 in the definition of Mātrīsamaka too which woull mean that the g group (ISI) which 'combines the even Mātrā with its successor into a long letter' is to be avoided in all the four places of the Mātrīsamaka line. The restriction about the 1st group is, however, mentioned by writers on Prakrit metres as well, like Hemacandra (3.65) and author of Kavidarpaņa (11. 19.) As regards the restriction about the third group, Pingala and others simply lay down that the 9th Mātrī shall always be represented by a short letter. But when we remember that when the 3r«l group happens to be of any kind other than , the metre is either called Upacitra or Vänavāsikā (see Sūtras 13-14 below), we must conclude with our author that in Mātrāsamaka, it must be of (IIS) type only. S. 13-14:- When the third group of the Mātrāsainaka is either q (SS) or (SII), it is called Upacitrā; but it is called Vänavāsikā, when the thrid group is eitler 3 (ISI)' or a (T,TII). S. 15-16: -The iss. drop the illustration of Vänavasikī and the definition as well as the Bhāşya of Visloka. I have reconstructed the 15th Sūtra and its Bhāşya from the Bhāşya on S. 16. If the 2nd group in the Mātrāsamaka is 3 (ISI) or fã (1,I1I), it is called Visloka. If the 3rd group in the Visloka is either (IIS), or s (ISE) O III), it is called fall In S. 16, we inust supply pro pour from S 15as is shown.by a gara“, s, #, #; (IIS, ISI, I,III), See Paigala:4. 43-46, ( 51 ) S 17 :- When the four Caturmātra groups are of any kind whatsoever without restriction, we get a Pādākulaka, which word literally means a promiscuous mixture of the lines of Mātrāsamaka and its derivative metres, See Pirigala, 4. 47. evenl S. 18:- The wording of the Sūtra is not clear to me with the help of the Bhāșya. Gītyāryā has four lines, each containiing 16 Mātrās, all of which are represented by short letters. Jayadeva definitely states that his Acaladhỉti is the Gityāryā of Pingala. Similarly Sikhā and Cülıkā (S. 19-20) of Pingala and our author are called Anangakrīdā and Atirucirã by Jayadeva and Kedāra. S. 19:When the Gītyāryā has the first two lines containing all long and the last two containing all short letters, it is called Viśikhā; this is called (Saumyā) Sikhā by Pingala, 4 51. Our author does not mention the opposite case which according to Pingala is (Jyotiḥ) Sikliā. Both Gityāryā and Viſikhū are Sama Caluşpadis; whereas the Sikhá mentioned above at 2. 28 by our author is an Ardhasama Catuspadi. To bring out this distinctiuni, our author calls one śikhū and the other Višikhā. Pingala, lowever, has kept the same name Sikhū for both, at 4. 49-52 and 5, 43-44. S. 20:--Cūlikā is a Dvipadi and that too of the Ardhasana lype. It has been mentioned here probably under the influence of Pingala. Besides, the name Viśikhā which suggests an improvement over Pinigala, inust have reminded him of the Sikhā, with which the Cūlikā is connected. The Cūlikā Dvipadi is equal to a half of the Sikhā mentioned above at 2. 28. Compare Pingala, 4. 52. Had convenience been the consideration for our autlior, he would liave defined it just after Sikhā at 2. 28 above. - S. 21-24 - The author now reverts to the Mātrāsama Cattış. padis, and so he wants us to supply the word : from S. 10 above. Nýtyagati has five Caturmātras in each of its four lines. Out of these, the 3rd and the 5tíı must consist of two long letters each, and the Yati must occur at the end of the 3rd Gaņa. This definition of Nrtyagati entirely agrees with that of Heinacandra (cf. N. S. P. ed. of 1912, p. 26 b, lines 2-3). But our author's illustration" is rather unsatisfactory as regards the Yati in particular, In Hemacándra's illustration the Yati is quite obvious so much so ( 52 ) that a line actually looks as if it consists of two separate parts of three and two Gaņas. S. 25.28:-Națacarana is a metre of four lines, cach laving three Caturmätrils of wlich the last two must always consist of two long letters each. Here the Yati must cunse after the second Gaņa. The definition of Natacarama too agrees wliolly willi that of Hemacandra, p. 26a, last line. Our author's illustration in this case is very unsatisfactory. It does not observe the condition of the Yati, nor even of the last two Caturinātras consisting of all long letters. Ileniacandia's illustration is quite appropriate, the Yati clearly dividing the line into two parts of 2 and 1 Ganas cach. In effect Natacaraña is only a sliortenel form of Nityagati, one Gaņa being removed from cach of ille two parts separated by the Yati in every line. both these metres have a clear association with dancing as their names and composition show. No other writer on metres, so far as I know, has mentioned these (wo inctres. Hemacandra and our autlior agree in that the metres arc Sanskiit mcircs, Both mention thein at the end of thic Mātrāsamaka group. They do 11ot seem to belong to the South, at lcast to Kannada prosudy, since Jayakirti does not mention them in the midst of other unusual Sanskrit metres which lie defines at the end of chi. 6 (of. JBBRIS. 1945, p. 12). ADHYAYA IV. This chapter treats of llic three groups of the Visama l'ílias (the metres of dissimilar lines) namely, the Udgatā group, the Padaçaturürdliva (called Dāmārārā in a very artificial 11anner by our author) group and tlic Anuştubh Vaktra group. Our author has defined these groups in the descending order of the number of letters 'occuring in the first lincs of their representatives. Thus the first line of Udgatā contains 13 letters, that of Dāmīvārā contains. 8, and that of Anuştubh Vaktra, also contain 8 letters. The latter however, is considered as smaller than the former because, while, the retpaining three lines of the Anuştubh Vaktra contain only 8 letters, each, those of the Daniávārā contain 12, 16 and 20 Press, it succession. It may be noted that these three groups are 1 ( 53 ) treated in just the opposite order by Pingala, the Vaktra group being the first and tlie Udgatā group being tlie last. The Anuştubh Vaktra group of metres is treated as a group of Vişama Vitias even though all the lines in a stanza in these metres contain 8 letters only and not less normore; because, the construction of these lines is not uniforin, ample freedoin being allowed in the use of short and long letters except at certain places. Vaktra is really the class i are of the metres of this group, Anuştubli merely signifying that they belong to the Inuştubh class out of the 26 classes of Vitlas beginning with Gāyatrī aud ending with Utkrli. It is in this Anustubh class alone that we find some meires whiclı, through they contain ilie sane number of letters in all their lines, must nevertheless be considered as l'işama Vịttas owing to the dissimilar structure of their lines. This Anuştubh Vaktra is indeed a legacy from the Vedic Antiştubh and appears to have been carefully preserved in Sanskrit prosody through its preponderating usc in thic epics and in the Smſtis. [t has been spared the methodizing touch of the Sanskrit prosudists owing to its exhalted position (being used in the cpics and Simris), though it has not wholly escaped it. Another legacy from the Vedic metres was the Triştubh Jagatī stanzas which are seen in the epics and other post-vedic literature of that same period. The lines of these n.etres as a rule contain the same number of letters, but their structure in respect of the use of short and long letters is absolutely free as in the case of their Vedic ancestors, But these have ſually yielded to the persistent-labours of the classical prosoudist and have alnıost disappeared from the field. Yet even they liare left a trace of their once important position and freedom in the metres known as the Upajītis, Indeed the freedom that is allowed here is restricted only to the first letter, which may be either short or long. But it is clear that at one time such free metres belonging to the Triştubh or Jagatī class were allowed under · the name Upajāti as is seen from the reniarks of Kedāra, VR. 3. 4 and Hemacandra, 3. 117. See also Halāyudha on Piiigala, 6. 17. These three groups of Vişama Vrttas.stand inutually distinguislıcd. We have already seen above the nature of the Vaktra group. The Dānāvārā group is characterized by the preponderance of short letters, the last two letters alone being long; while the third or" the Udgatā group has lines contajning a definite number ( 54 ) of letters, of course mutually 1111c111al, ulich must Collosit a giveni order of l1ccession of short and long syllables. S. 1:--gal The four lines respectively contain 1 9993 (IIS, ISI, I, ISI); 2 2893it (I, IIT, ISI, SIS); 3 5 (STI, III, IS, IIS); 4 97954 (IIS, ISI, IIS, ISI, S). l'ingala and others call this metre by the feminine name Ullgatä; of Piigala, 5. 25. S, 2:-*: If the 3rd line of the Udgata were to contain TFA (SIS, III, S, IIS), it is called Saurablıaka; cf. Pirgala, 5. 26. S. 3:ai: [f the 3rd line of the Udgata contains pas (i.e. III, III, IIS, 11S) it is called Lalitā. Pinigala and Kedåra call it by the incuter name Lalita; cf. Piigala, 5. 27. S. 4: _tea agfaa: The four lines of this metre respectively contain a log (SSS, II, SIS, ISI, ISS) ERP (II, SII, IIS, IS, ISS,) acas (II, III, I, IIS,) and TEETH (III, III, III, IS, IIS, S,. Sce Pingala, 5. 28. Some live letters are missing in ile mss. from thic first line of the illustration. Similarly, the word yathut at the end of the third line is redundant. S. 5-6: -a and ggfatea: 1f the 3r<l line of Upasthitapracupita is doubled in length, it is called Vardhamana and if the same line contains of asit (SS, IIS, I, SIS) instead of its usual letter-groups, it is called Sudithavirāžlurşablia. S. 7-10:-Tliese Sūtras define llie Padacaturúruliva Dánāvārā group of inetres. As a matter of fact, our author las chosen only one of the inetres (11anıcly Apīda, of this group whiclı has four different varities according to Pirgala) and given its 24 varieties obtained by a inutual exchange of places among its four lines. In the Padacaturürdliva there is a complete frecciom of choice of short and long letters in the lines, their neinber alonc being restricted, according to Pirgala and others; but in tlic other three, namely Apīda and Pralyāpīda of two kinds, there is no sucli freedom and all letters must be short, except the first or the last two which. inust be long, as the case may be; see Pirigala, 5. 20-23. Our author has chosen only the Apīda from these as said above whose lines "contain respectively 8, 12, 16 and 20 letters all of Ach that he short, except the Täst two which must be long. Our bu lays down an additional condition that at the end of every four ( 55 ) letters there will be a Yati. By a mutual exchange of places aniong the four lines, 24 different varieties are obtained whose names according to our author will be obtained by putting together the last letters of the four lines in succession (5. 10). Pingala mentions only three varieties of the Padacaturürdhya (see Halāyudha on Pirigala 5.24) according as the 1st line exchanges it splace with the 2nd, the 3rd and the 4th lines, whose names he gives as Mañjarī (or Kalikā), Lavali and Amiſtadhārā. Kedāra and others however, maintain that these three varieties are to be admitted only in the case of the Apida but not in that of the others. Jayakirti, who calls the Apīda and the two Pratyāpīdas by the names Padaruci, Anupadaruci and Atipadaruci, admits the varieties, namely Kalikā Lavali and Amftadhārī in each of the three. S, 11-12:The author now takes up the Vişama Vrttas belonging to the Anuştubh class. The general name of these metres Vaktra. See the introductory note on the three groups of the Vişama Vșttas. S. 13-14:-The two Caturinātras i.e. and (SII and III) must 110t occur at the beginning of the lines of a Vaktra. This means ultimately that the 2nd the 3rd letters must not be short simultaneously. This condition is expressed in other words by Pingala, 5.10, who says that the # (IIS) and the a (III) Gan.is must be avoided after the first letter in every line, Siinilarly the group (ISS) must always be used after the 4th letter (201) in all lines of the Vaktra. S. 15-16:-These Sūtras tell us that if the q (ISI) group is used after the 4th letter in the even lines of a Vaktra, it is called Pathya Vaktra; but it is called Viparītapathyā Vaktra when this same group is 11sed at the same place in the odd lies. S. 17-18:-A Vaktra is called Capalā when the < (III) group is substituted for the usual & (ISS) group only in the odd lines after the 4th letter. It is called Vipulā when the 7th letter is short in the even lines. Eventually, Vipulā is the same as Pathyā-Vaktra which has the " (ISI) group after the 4th letter in its even lines. But the alternative name is introduced here by the author, following the lead of Pingala, in order to mention Saitava's view about Vipula. Saitavä thinks that a Vaktra is called Vipulā, when short letter is ( 56 ) substituted for the long one which is enployed at the 7th place in all its lines (for, the group g i.C., ISS is laid down after the 4th letter according to 4. 14 above), and not merely in the even lines as held by our author and l'irigala. Tlic pallie Vipulā has also to be introduced by our author, for defining what lie calls l'imali, Vikalā, Virala ani Visalā, but which are respectively described by T'ingala and his followers as Bha-vipulā, Ta-vipulā and Na-vipulā, S. 20:-The Vipulā will liave the letters #, *, * and it substituteri in place of tlie middle letter i. e., I of its name, according as tlie (SIT), (SSI), a (SIS) and < (III) Gaņas are respectively substituted for the usual & (ISS) in all the lines of Vaktra after the 4th letter, We must supply alo: fro: S. 14. The difference between the Capalā and Na-vipulā i. e., Visala is that in Capalī, 5 (III) occurs after the 4th letter only in the odd lines, while in the Na-vipula i. e., Viśālā of our author, it so occurs in all the four lines. Like the other Canis, even or a (SSS or IIS) may occur after the 4111 letter in a line; see Haliyudha on Pingala 5. 19, and Hemacandra, (N. S. P. edi.) p. 22a, line 7ff. There is a slight difference, liowever, belween our Vimala etc. and the Bliavipulā etc., of l'ingala and Hemacandra. The Gaņas that are introduced after the 4th letters are to be for all the four lines according to our author; while they are to he introduced only in the oddl lines, in the opinion of Pingala and Hemacandra, tlıe eren lines having the q (ISI) or their yr after the fourth letter, It will thus be seen, that whicu all the different varieties of the Vaktra are taken together, there is complete freelom of employing a sliort or long letter at any place in the line as there was in the Vedic Anuştubh; but there is only one important exception in the case of letters at the 2nd and the 3rd place. It is that two short letters must not be simultaneously used at the 2nd and the 3rd places in a line as said above in S. 13 and at Pingala, 5.10. Pingala 5.11 also lays down that in the case of en lies, a Ragana (SIS) must not be used after the 1st letter. Its mis effect means that if the 2nd letter is long, the 3rd also nust: be longa This restriction however, is not admitted either, Hourshor or by Hemäcandia, or even by Kedūra and Jayadeva.
( 57 ) ADHYĀYA V. S. 1 and 2: Any metre belonging to any class from Gayatri to Ulkrti is called Samūna when long and short letiers occur in: regular succession in its lines. is it gtitip of a long and a sliort luller (IS). On the other hand, any actre from the above mentioned classes i.e., fruin Gāyatri lo Uikrti is called Pramania when short and long letters are similarly employerl, is a group of a short and a long letter (IS). Pingala and his successors apply the names. Sanrāna an Pramāna-rather their feminine forms-o nicires of the Aluştubh class only and not to others. Our author stands alone in extending their application in all metres which Lelong to the classes beginning willi Gāyatri and endling with Utkiti. Naturally therefore, lic defines thein here at the beginning of the treatnient of metres belonging to the Gāyatri and the ollier classes.; Whercas Pirgala and others define them on the first oecasion whci1 they treat thc nietres of the Anuştubli class, i.c., when they cleline the Anuşļubh Vaktra at thic beginning of the Vişanm l'rttas. Sec Lirigala, 5. 6-8. The actual metre chosen for illustration by our commentator is of the Jagatī class. S. 3:-A netre containing any other arrangement of short and long leiters in its lines and belonging to one of the classes from Gāyatrī to Utkyti is called Vilāna. Pingala and others restrict this name too, to metres of thic Anuştubli class, while our author extends it to all the classes, like Samāna and Pramāņa. As a matter of fact, Vitāna is a coinmon name which is well applicable to all the following metres defined in chs. 5-7 of our work, since Vitāna is evidently intended to be a metre of similar lines of same length by our author and also by Pingala, even though tlie latter defines it' at the commencericnt of his chapter on 'Vişaına Vritas. The stanza is from the Mahābhārata and is also quoted for the same purpose by Rāmcandra Kavibhāratī on Vịttaratnākara, 5. 15. Pingala 8. 1, Kedāra 5. 15, and Hemacandra, 7. 73, all agree about the naine Gāthā which is thus appli. cable to any irregular metre which has been sanctioned by ancient use in popular or epic poetry. The derivative meaning of the word Gāthā is 'what is sung' (from gai to sing).

This Adhyāya treats of the six Pratyayas, namely, Prastāra,
Naşta, Uddista, Lagakriya, Samkhyā and Adhvan. I have explained
