Though the contents of both the recensions are the same they differ in the number of the verses contained in them While the former con sists only of 36 verses, the latter is found to contain about 44 verses This difference in the number of verses 28 probably due to the addition of the later annotatory Verses to those of the text itself by the school of the Adhriryu priests with whom it was in frequent use Regarding the date of the Jyutisha the late Swak annu Pillai says in his Indian Ephemeris Vol I Part I Page 448 19 follows The location of the summer and winter solstices in the middle of Aslesha and the beginning of Dhunishtha referred to by Varahamıhıra both in Ins Briliat ambiti and Panchasiddhantica is evi dently that recorded in the Vedangrylutisha It mry be sud that Varihamıbira s work stands at the centre of a period of astronomy wbose span is 3,000 years at the one end of wluch we stand nud at the other end the Vedangujyautisha It 13 known from inodern astronomny that the movement of the precession is one degree for every 72 yerrs Now the distance of the situation of the summer solstice at the beginnwg of Ardri at the present time from that in the middle of Asleshi at the time of the Vedang jy rutisht 1 1131 -67 that is 455 degrees 'I his gives at the rate of one degree in 72 tirs 40,7 X 72=382 verre Roughly speaking it my be sud that the I edin, uji yutishia 11 observation must have been made 9 300 yeurs before AD 1916, that is, about BC 1400 Similarly if we base the date of Varābumihin on the location of the solstitial point recorded in lus vorhs, it will be AD 332, for the difference between the situa tion of the summer solstice at the present tine (AD 1916) and thint observed and recorded by Varīla mıhır in his time is 22 degrees which at the rite of 72 years per degree gives 1,584 years that had elapsed from the time of Virilamihin till 1916 In other words it would plzce Varihamılırım AD 300, wherens he actually lived and wrote about AD 350 Here the error of 250 verrs is et idently due to the erroi made in observing the eriet position of the sunımer solstice it the time of Varib mhira Allowing the sue proportion of error for prev 10119 epochs, the intiquity of the Vedanguyantısı onservation, lecoided in the Jy autısbr, muy also lrue to be reduced by that 13 il, in other words froin 3 300 years to 2792 years before not that is from BC 1400 to BO 850 “Using the precessional factor of modern 70 tronomy one degree for 72 years Mr Tilak in huis Orion and Professor Jacobi in an article first pub lished in a Geriın scientific journal and reproducer in the Indr Antiqurry for 1894 (Page 158), simultaneously declared thnt the Vedāvgus rutruh preceded Varāhımılura s time by 1 896 yeirs, und tl it there is a still exrlier period when correct stronomic observations had been made in India md tut was when the vernal equinos was a Mrigasira Nakshatra longitude 52° 20 instead of in Asvini 0 longitude 15 in Vorāhamılıra's tune and that thrt epoch must live preceded Varalı inihim's own epoch by 63} x 72=160 x 24=3,810 jean that is, that the observation v 19 mrde, und the ledu in which it is belitied to be alluded to 1175 composed about BC yairs before now that is 5,100 Ilus puruxl al o may not to be 1300 111 cut down by is, 5 400 years bemg reduced to the tune of 900 or 1,000 years, and the Vedic antiquity brought down from BC 3500 to the region of BC 2500 The latter date more nearly approxi mates what we might call the philologists Vedic period (according to Max Muller, Weber, Macdon nells Ind Lit, 1909, Page 11 &c), as distinguished from the astronomei s Vedic period' This is a fair estimate of the date of the Vedang Jyautisk, and there is no reason wliy it should not be accepted It is partly to this buigh antiquity and partly to the appearance ou the srene of what are called the Siddhantas that we owe much of the obscurity of the verses of the Vedangajyuutisha In big notes on this work the late Dr Thibaut bas clearly explained verses •1 to 10, 18, 21, 24, 28 and 30 to 40, leaving the rest as obscure These verses would have remamed obscue aud unexplained for ever if we have not received light from an unexpected quuter I mean the Jaina astro nomical works, such is the Suryaprigoaptı and the Jyotishkaranda in which the ystem of the Vedang jyautisha is almost exactly reproduced Tue very words of the eleventh verse which has balled the attempts of scholars at its interpretation are found translated in Prakrit in the Sunyłpragnaptı It is very curious to find that wlule the Brahmins took to the Siddh intas leiviug the rough method of calculation of the Vedanga jyautishu in spite of the persistent attachment to whatever is incient, the Jamas should preserve the Sacri ficiul calendır in spite of their revolt ag iinst the Vedic sacunces Probably the calendar was used not merely for sacrificial pm poses, but also for the observance of other religious customs performed on New Moon and Full Moon Days, zud on the days of solstices and equinoxes The reason why preference was given to the Siddhantas over the Vedangajj uutisha Lonever sured the latter might liave been in the view of the priests is evidently tlie more accurate method of determining the Tithus and the Nakshatras taught in the Siddhantas than in the Vedāngajyautisha The modern orthodox astronomers of Indii wlio bmdly cling to the Suidh intan iniy tike a lesson from t1119 and reform their cılendır in the light of modern scientific astronomy In 111» Notes on Ilindu Astronomy, Dr J Burgess szys that "the figures (of the Vedang?) give for the moon s gidereal resolution 27 319:33 and for the syno dical montlı 20 516129 dtys, thint for every 19 JOIN the synodical months according to the Vedangnis autıslı inust be in defect by 3 399 days, whule tlic widereal months would be in defect by 2 093 days and the rolar years themsclves would be in excess by 14 081 days, and thnt the system of the Vedungryzutishız is a primitive and rough method of observation" Regarding the serviceableness of the Ved inga Dy nutisha in spite of the defective metliod of calculation trught in it, the late Swamih muu Pillai says (Lulim Ephemeris, Page 447) as follows “If to be on the safe side we suppose the Vedangajyautisha was current even 600 years before the Christian ern, hon did it lappen that the primi tive and rouglı inethod adverted to by Dr Burgess did not land its followers in confusion and disaster? Since, 15 le points out, after 19 years, Tithis under the Vedangajyautisha must occur 35 days late, it must follow that after 19 yairs people would either have kept Nen Moon Du when I moon 3 days old wzs shining in the shy or lue given up the Vedangajvautish altogether Agunit 14 probably unbeard of that any people, however primitive who follow the luvur cnlendar, would be so regardless of lunar plt ises as to keep Full Moou when the moon w28 in the fourth day of her wanmg In handling such z system as the Vedungnyautisha, we must first of all assume as in 1x10m, that 110 material deviation from the ctunt recurrence of Tıthus ad Nakshatris 1118 contemplated under at Otherwise the w bole sclitme was bound to collapse in 20 years The sclieme was intended to be worked in such a way tint once in 5 yerrs Maglia Suhla 1 sliould coincide with moop in Dhanushtha Nakshatra and sun in Dbanislitha Naksbatra at the time of Uttırayana Such schemes in substance are found all over the world A scheme of this description is called a tied lunur calendar, that is, a lugar calendar 80 constructed that it may periodically fall into live with the solar year The Jews and the Greeks, among ancient nations of whose crlendars we have precise information, bad erch of them a tied luurr calendaı, but without the special Indian detail of Nakshatras In all such calendars the essential thing is that the recurrence of lupur Tıthis, as we call them in India or lunar phases as they are called in Greeh, should correspond to actual fict and in India under the Vedangajyyutishi as well as under the later Suryasiddhanta, which we now observe there is another tie, that of the Nakshatras wlose actunl recurrence also the calendar should futhfully represent Such a calendar 14 subject to a very rendy and natural test, because the scheme of Tıthis can be tested every fortnight by com parison with the full moon and the new moon there may be 2 error of single day, the first phasis or ypperrince of the moon after she lins become new being for instance declared by the calendar z dry too late or 1 day too errly, but the error would never be permitted to exceed 1 sngle day, and would be rectifier by droppmg Tith m the count, which we now call a Ksha? Tith, oi by ndding day to the lunar month making it consist of 30 iuster of 29 Titlus The udvuti of the Indian Nakshatra sistem is th it it provides 1 safeguard and a remedy gunst u error of even a single day which might occur, as just słown, under 1 pure Tithi system The moou covers whole Nabslıntr space of 13; degrees in the hervens in the course of ? smgle day, and if the calendar klions bier to be in a Nakshatr different froin tint which slic actu ulls occupies we do not want to wut until Nes Voon or until Full Moon to di coser the error, wud could rectify it at once by Vit in actually took place under the Veda nguyautisha may be ascertained by studying the actual decursus bor facilitating such a study he has appended to Nakshatra space m 13 528013 days, according to inodern European astronomy, and in 13 528102 days according to the second Suryasiddhanta, and 13 55, according to the Ved ingriyiutisha Although we cannot visibly see the sun occupying a prrticular Nakshatra space by day, we know fronı the Nahsh itri coming to the zenith at midnight that the sun must their be in Nakshatr 180 degrees removed from the zenith Nakshatr, so that if we have previously mapped out the ecliptic into 27 Nakshatra spaces (whether equal or unequal does not matter for our present purpose) we should know from the zenith Nakshatra at midnight what Nakshatra the sun was in at that moment, and since the Nakshatra space or any part of it can occupy the zenith for only 13' dive it follows that un error in the calendar regardmg the sun s position among the Nakshatras can be detected after 131 days in any case after 27 days or after the sun has done two Nakshatra spices Regarding the tied lunar year the same learne 1 scholar says as follows The lupar year is tied to the solar year, but it is tied loosely, that is in such a way that the lunur year may begin from 1 to 29 days before the solur year, but it must begm before the solar jear and within one month before the commencement of the solar year Similarly although the Vedanga jyuutisha says that 5 years should consist of 1,830 days or 62 synodical months, or 61 sideral months, it did not mean that any extensive deviations from the actual solar and lular phenomena should be permitted for the sake of the 1,830 days What of solar and lunar phenomen? under such a system Ayer a by some of you tibles 4 und B which are reproduced liere THE VEDANG UYIURISHI (41 VDIR-TIBE! Conclusion --(a) The Vedaugairautislia year would in the
coorso of 480 years become a truo sidereal y ear differing from
the modern true sidereal year by 208 palas for 480 years, or by
less than half a pula or 10 soconils of time per annum
(b) From differences (9) and (12) it follows that after 180
such Vedanga autisha years as are here supposed, the log of
jeurs inust begin once more with Magha dukla 1, the moon in
Dhadishtlin and sun in Dhanushtha
(c) From difference (10) It follows that a period of 2

In such case all thint 179 necessary to rectify the calendar 194 to drop the Idbiha month lz, the 62nd month and make the month of Vaglı begin at once, !e, without being preceded by 10 Idhika month This procedure would follow automaticalls from the very notion of an Adhiha inontlı What is indicated in the Veloguy hutesha is only a first outlme of the general calendar We must remember that at the time writing was not hooun ind the rules lind to be committed entirely to memory As usual such rules were brief apoplithegmatic, Irving down principles mther than forniult It has vot lutherto been suspected that the rule about iuserting an Adhihz month twice in the course of 5 years must bwe been subject to exceptious Iittle reflection will show however, thirt an Adhika month had to be inserted only when necessary clearli laid down in huutiksis Irtbysstra tut grinet 1 month of 30 cn il days the moon lo es 1 day and the It 14 11 sun gais day, and that when the difference between the sups and the moon s movements amounts to a month an Adhih? month is added The deviation at any moment from the standard Iuga could be measured by the sun s Nakslıntra, no des avion except of a trivial nature being permitted in regard to the inoon s Tithi and the moon 8 Nakshatra If the suns Nakshatri was 295 diss short of Dhanishtla, then an Adhika month was added and the same consideration would lead to the converse rule (though this is not expressly stated) that if the sun had reached Dhanishthadı 293 days before Nagha Sukla 1 the lunar calendar should lose an Adhika month Examples are given ibove of different periods after which a rectification of the Vedangajjautisha calendır might huve been effected by dropping or adding an Adhika month The shortest period within which the error could hue been rectified was 30 years or 6 Yugas If an Adhika mouth (synodıcal as well 's sidereal) was dropped at the end of 30 years the above table shows that as the immediate result the length of the synodical month as well as of siderca) month would have been considerably improved 'I be length of the solar year would have become 365 2 days instead of 366 2 days By continuing the correction for 5 cycles of 30 years and tabulatug the progress after two more ordinary Yugas of 5 years each we reacli a surprising result an excligmos of 160 jerrs yielding an almost perfect synonchl month in almost perfect sidererl month, and in almost perfect sidereal jerr periods of the Vedrnguyautisha thus adjusted, are so perfect that they could have been observed for 10 000 years without the year going wiong by a single dry Compared with this exclignos of 160 years, those for S15 ind 540 years are less interesting, but they offer alternative adjustments of the Vedrogajyautisha calendar, and they are exlubited for the purpose of showing that whether the makers of an almac under 222 The mein Kit the Vedangyy yutisha bad, or lindi not, ner of in ercligmos, they would have been lud, by thic very notion of an Adhka month, to drop an Adliha month once in 30 or once in 35 years, and restore it again when necessary All the cycles conserge to about 1,000 years by Varamihira's time, when the sun at Uttaran 114 This is short of 7 Dhanishthz by about 22 days exactly the difference between B and C under column 4 for 1,000 year For, 1072 23 -- 22 days The difference for 5 periods (1,575 yeara) under column 5 between B and C sould be jX4 35=2175 days The difference under column 6 for 3 periods of 510 years each (2,620 years) rould be 12 06 days between lunnr and tropicil jcars (A and B) and 1071 days between lunr ind siderenl years (A and C) Total 22 77 days But under 1 540 years exchgmos, 24 de cloped 111 column 6, the difference due to precession or to sudere al error would be about the same le e, some 7 days) for say thing less than 1 millennium and the falling bich of the tropical, with reference to the siderer? or Nakshatrı year, may not have been percen ed so curls as under an exclugmos of 100 years Thus long quotation from the Indian Lphemers of the late Summih inpu Pillai an authority on Indian astronomy and its achienie of almannc, clearly allows tut in forming his opinion on the calendar system of the Vedungajyautiala, the late Dr Burgess had not taken into consideratiou the two" ties' with much the liruar jerr is bound to the solar ear and the Izhshatrı yeur, and that the aimavic preprred in accordance with the rules lud down in the Jyuutishi seried the pretical purpose for whuch it 178 dessed It is however necessary for the priestly 2-tronomers of Vedic India to test the recuncy of the calendar by periodical obsert tions and adjustments bi omitting a day or two now and thien That they did tbs, is clearly stated in the 12th and other verses in the text itself But it was a tedious labour which they woided by adopting the system of the Siddhanthas later The system of the alminac described in the Veding?jynutisha is undoubtedly pre Goeecian and cannot be regirded to have been current later than the beginning of the Christian Ert when Greek astronomy is believed to have been introduced into India In the introduction to buis translation of Varahamihira s Panchasıddbāntikā (Page 55), Thibaut azys is follows The late Professor Whitney (Page 170, Sürya siddhantha) has expressed the opinion that the absence from the Hindu system of any of the improvements introduced into Greek astronomy by Ptolemy seems to favour the conclusion that the original transmission of Astronomical knowledge into India took place before Ptolemy According to Encyclopædia Britannica, Vol 20 Page 87, Ptolemy s first observation was in 151 A D it follows therefore that the improvement in the system of the Hindu calendır after the Greek model came into use in Indıı about the beginning of the Christian Lra and that the improved calendar was substituted for that of the Vedangajyuutisha Thus thrown into disuse the Jyrutisha seems to have become merely a sacred piece of recitation like the Vedas und obscure like them It is quite wtur il that a work of such antiquity should bafile the attempts of scholars to correctly interpret it So far back as 1877 Dr Thibaut made some contribution to the explanation of the Jyautisha to the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal and correctly expluned almost all the verses with the exception verses 13 17, 1923, 25 27, 29 und 41 The explanations and interpretations offered by the late Sankarı Balıkushn: Diksbat, Vir Burhis patya, Mahamahopadhyava Sudhakar Dvivedi, and Bild Gangadhara Tilaks to elucidate these obscure verses are not merely unsatisfactori, but contrary to what the author of the work meant to convey The astronomical propositions and rules for the preparation of u alnınac S11 of religious ntes ad festivals cont uped in the Süryapragnapti, the Jy uutisliharında, and the Kahlohi prakāśa of the Juin is are quite similar to those taught in the Vedangajjautisha and throw a flood of light on the obscure passages of the Jynutisha The reading of the text adopted in thuis work is the same as that of the text edited by Dr Thubut with the esception of a Witli 7 slight modification in the readmg of verse 13 view to arrive at Parv? raši exactly similar to that proposed and explained by Dr Thbrut and also expounded in the Jyotishiharında, the word “Rūp? samyutumn was substituted for “ Chapya samvutam in verse 13 of the text How thuis modihention enables us to ane at the Pari i rasi intended by the vuthor and to explain the tests of the Paria rasi given in the subsequent verses is made cleu both in thc Inglish translation and the Sanskrit commentary of the tert I think it unnecessary, therefore, for me to offer an apology for making even such a solitary change in the rending of a verse in the tert For, without that change in the verdwg of the verse the Parti rīsi figure He w bach is exactly similar to that stated in the Jyotishlarndı cannot be arrived at With this exception, the rending of the text is as found in Dr Thibaut s edition and the obscure serses are explained on the analogy of the problems and formula contained in the Jama astronomical works, for the supply of which I um highly indebted to Mr Kunvarji Anandaji, President of the Junagrunthaprcharaha sabhi i Bhuva nagar In conclusion, it is my pleasant duty to achnowledge with grteful thanks the generous help wluch the Gor erument of I113 Higliness the Maharja of Mysore hase given me to get the work printed at the Government Brunch Press at Mysore My thuhs are also due to Mr J N Krishni Iyenyı, NA, the Librarian, and to Mr S Nimsimbachar and Vr Srim sagopalıclar, Pandits, of the Government Oriental Librart in Mysore for going through the proofs I am al o lughly thankful

Arthasastra and the Suryapragnaptı begin the months with the first of the dark half and the months with the full moon in the white half the Vedangajj autisha begins its months with the first of the white halt and ends with the new moon The year began on the first of the dark half of Sravana after the full moon of the month of Ashadha for the Surj aprignapti and the Arthasastri while for the Vending?yautisha it begin with the first of the white half of Sravant after the zeir moon of the month of Ashadha The Tithis of the commencement of the ten Ayanas are the same for all the three works But the Pakshas differ due to the change made from the white to tlie dark half The Nakshatras also differ owing to the preces sion of the equinodes at the time of the Suryyprigoaptı Varhumbira, the author of the Purchasiddhantika, records in bis Brihatsamhita the Occurrence of the Dahshuayana in the Punarvasu nakshatra It is also to be noted that no mention is made of the Zodiacal Signs in thirty days, and 1 lunır month 18 inide of 29 days and parts of a day so in a Savana month of 30 days the difference be tween these two (30 (29+*!)] is equal to o which is known 18 the parts of an the Jyotisliharındı of the Jauns regarding Parvi rası It says -The stin makea 5 revolutions in 194 Pirvas Hence in one Part 1 he mikes 5x7'', this is reduced to Nakshatras by multiplying it by 1830 as follows The moon tahes 1830 days to inahe 121 Par114 Hence to make one Pirs ? she takes 1:1, -hich equal to 11- 'I days Anotlier of arriving at the same is as follow a 8 part multiplied by twelle and then by two, and one half The moon takes 29 8 days to make a month, of this is equal to 14 it: days A fourth way of arriving at the same constant is stated to be as follows -The moon takes 1830 days to make 124 Parvis hence for one Prvi she tnkes 4*, equal to 142 dris “This expressed in terms of Nakshatrı amounts to 14 r' becluse 1 day is equi valent to 603 kalas and 1 Makshatra to 610 kalas The Bhamsas in certain Parias are nine or a case with the other Paras slone number is twelve or a multiple of twelve The 12th, 24th, 36th, 48th, 60th, 72nd, 84th, 96th, 108th, and 120th new moon Parvas, have S or multiples of 8 as their Blāmas. But in the case of Parv do less than twelve or less than a multiple of twelve, the Bhamsas are not in all cascs 11" or a multiple of 11 These exceptional cases are referred to in the next verse It is, however, to be noted that in the 15th and the 16th verses we are only told to test the Bhāmsas in the series of Parvas calculated in accordance with the rule lud clown in verse 13 That is all. We are taught no new formulae or astronomical problem in those two verses In the 16th verse some exceptions to the statement mide in verse 16 are given. 15. It has already been stated that the Parva-rāśi formula is given mamly for the purpose of ascertaining the Parva-days on which, the Błāmsa bemg less than 31 Amc7q, sacrifices are performed ; and in the case of those Parva-daye on which the Bhāinsas are more than 31 Amsas, sacuifices are begun on the 14th dry and finislied on the first day of the next Park. Hugr the moon moves through 67x27 or 1 809 Nakshatras Hence in 12 Paksbas she moves tlırough (1:'?) 12 which is equal to 175 Nakshatras und Tit parts of ? Nakshtra Non the moon tahes 1 day and 7 hals of the ne\t day to more through a Nah. 18 R The 17 end of the 12th Paksha or of a Prhslia wolose 711mber sbatra Hence to inore through 175 Nakshatras she requires 175 days and 176x7 or 1,225 kalas niore Since a day is equal to 603 halãs, 1,225 kalās are equal to which is equal to 2 days and 19 halās Accord ingly we may specify the velocity of the moon either in terms of the Amsas or in terms of the kalás So in 12 Pakshas the moon makes 177 days and 19 kalūs оi 176 Nakshatras and is parts of a Nakshatra. It is not, however, meant that 19 kalūs are equal to 8 Amsas For the moon requires C03 plus 7 or 010 halās to pass through a Nakshatra Hence to pass through 8 Amsas she requires 8 x 18 sluch 19 equal to 39 halās and st parts of a kalā Or to pass through 1 Aisa she requires 1 or 4 kalas and it parts of a kalā which rendered in decimals is equal to 4 91 kalās Not perceiving this, Naliamabop adlıyaya Sudhakara Dvivedi interpreted the word “ Aslıtaha' m the above verse to mean four and made 19 kalās equal to 4 Amsas Clearly it is a wrong inter pretation and a wrong calculation in the second hall of verse 19, we are asked to ascertain if there is a possibility of a Yoga of the sun and the moon (yukta-sambhave), by the application of the number 72 Yoga is the name applied to the joint space which would be travelled by the sun and the moon in a given period of time, supposing that these bodies travelled in opposite directions instead of, as they actually do, in the same direction In the supposed case the sun and the moon together would do the 360 degrees of the ecliptic in 25 42 days As will be seen, there is a clear reference to Yoga in this work. however, told how many Yogas they counted and how they were named The Jyotishkaranda of the Jainas mentious only one Yoga and calls it Vyatipăta It is probable that the Vedangajyautisha also counted only one Yoga and that its name was Vyatipit? This is referred to in the balf verse under consideration and the 3 We are not, 18 is a multiple of 12) 19 halas should be inserted , in formula of ascertainuug the Yogi ind its Naksiintra 35 The verse ) given in verse 26 In the cases of Únn Pakshas (that is, full moon Pakshas) one should apply the number 72 if there is n possibility of a logi combination of the sun and the moon For example, let us the the 23rd Pakshin Here the Bhamsa of the moon is 23 x 14, which is equal to 17 This is equal to 13 Nakshatras and 1 of Nakshatr from the preceding Pure Since the moon in hes 69 revolutions in 124 Parvas, tod the sun 5 rerolutions 11 the sime time they two togetier mahe 72 resolutions llence 72 is the inder number pointing to r logo of tb sun and the moon in the 23rd Part 2 under consider tion the moon s Bhamsn is 67 if the suns Blains 1 the same 23rd Parvu 18 5 then the total Bham as of the two bodies would be 72 In other words the sum c their longitudes in Bhimsas 19 72 the index number Now in 1 Tith the moon moves through 603 Kishthis and the sun 45 hashthis. This is rrived at 18 follows In 2 Yugof 1 860 Tathistle moon goes tlırough (27x67) Hence in one Tuthi she goes through (27X67)/1860, which is equal to (9 x 67)/620 Similarly the sun goes through (6X27)/1800 hich is equal to 40/620 Iu other words while the moon passes through 603 of the 620 pirts of a Nakshatra the sun goes through 45 of the same 620 parts A Nakshatrr is divided into 124 parts called Amsas and ench one hundred and twenty fourth part is further subdivided into 5 parts or the whole Nikslintra is divided into 620 pirts called hashthus Since 5 hashthus nre nearly equil to 11 Amsi, 45 hashthas passed through by the suu 11 Tithi are equal to 9 Ainsis In a Tith the moon gol. through 003 hashthing or 67 Amśns This measuremen is made use of in 1er e 20 where tl e logr of the sur and the moon is defined and the Nakshatrn of the log is ascertained 22 per lithi Nakshatra of a Parla are included, the Trthlalás at the rate of 7 lalas [7+(9 or 10))=16 or 17 lalus Hence in the remainder obtained after deducting the frtlı halas (that 18, the 7 Talas requed to concert the Tıthis into days), one should hnow the halas 11ect ssary to arrize at the Nakshatra of a Title 21 Nakshatra Thus taking one Sarma day ind 7 hals of the next day as the duration of the moon s movement through a Naksliatrı it is easy to find out the Nuh slintrn of each Tithi in a Pariz In applywg the formula gren i verse 20, the Tith itself may be multiplied by 11 and the quotient obtained by multiplying the hilas of the Pura bliamsa by 1l and by dividing the product by 610 added to the number of Tıtlıs first obtained The sum is the number of the Nakshatra of the Parva in question counted from the Nakshatra of the previous Parva Usually the 15th Nakshatra from the Nakshintrı of the preceding Purva is the Nul slutra of the Parva in question The product obtained by multiplying the Titlu by 11 with the addition of the quotient obtumed by dividing by 610 the product of kalas of the Pariz blamsr multiplicd by 11 is almost equal to 16 If the number of Pirv whose Nakshatra is desired to be known is more than one, then the sum of the Tithis at the rate of 15 Titlus per Parva should be multiplied by 11, the sum of the halus at the rate of 228 kalus per Parva bhamsa should also be multiplied by 11 and divided by 610 The quotient thus obtained is to be added to the number of Tıthis already got The resulting sum is divided by the number of elup ed Puvas The quotient goes the Mal sbntra of the Parvi in ques tion For example the Nak of the 6th Parva is (4X11) 1 lus (223X4x1l)--610 is 60 This divided by 4 15 llence the Nak of the 5th Part 2 is the 15th froni that of the preceding Parvi It is known that the Tıthis are lunır, and the dry s solar in verse 22 we tre told of the way in wluch the sun may be connected with the Tith, gives 21 The fise Vislusas of the Dihslunay'ın? irt on unet en die and in the month of hurtika, Tlie 23 I'rom the past Parva parts deduct double the number of days equivalent to a Trthi The sun will be found to have Tirs stand on the Paria tithr on the parts of that Mandala or circle which is equivalent to the remaining Trth days 22 If the number of the Vishuva or equinoctial day 25 multiplied by two and one is deducted from the product and agail multiplied by six the procluct thus arriveil at denotes the number of the Paksha in which the desired Vishuva occurs , the number of the Here the word Mindala means day circle In a Yuga the sun makes 1,830 day circles, the moon 1,769 and the Nakshatrns 1 809 (vide verse 29) According to the quotation from the Jyotishkuanda made in the Sanskrit commentary, the sun makes in one Parva 16 cicles, and the moon 14 d. circles It is known that ju 1,830 drys of ? Yuga the moon makes 1 860 lithuis Hence one Tithi is equivalent to får durys equal to 12 days equal to (1 Titlu minns 127) days equal to (124 minus 2 T1 )/124 diss Hence , Purva or 15 Tıthis are equal to 15 (124—2)/124 equal to 14 ts Nor is the sun moves through 16 circles in z Parva, he moves in 14 :? days XIX equal to 175 equal to 15 circles That is, he will be in the 46th division of the 62 divisions of the day circle when the 16th 11thi of the Parva 18 current (For other details see the Sinshrit commentary) 22 The kihloh aprikası says (Pages 74 78) 99 fol lows The day of which the day time and the night-tune pre equal to each other, each being inerrurci by 16 AIultūrtas, is called the Vishuma day Vrslun a dry in eich Aunn in 1 lug? there ar ten Ishuri dnis five of the Uttarijana fall on even daya in the month of Madhan (Vaishh) thard lunur day sath Rolıını after six Part 19 lase There is one The fint laura falls on the 24 Paksha, divided by tho, is said to lcnote the number of the Tithe on which the l'ashura falls. 23. The product, which is obtained when the number ; elapsed; the second on the ninth with Dbanislıthă after the lapse of 18 lartas, the third on the full moon day with Svätı after 30 Parvas; the fourth on the oth (13th?). with Punarvasu after 43 Parvas; the fifth on the 12th day with Uttarābhādrapada after 55 Parvas; the sixth on the third day with Anurādhā after 68 Parvas; the seventh on the ninth with Jaglia after 80 Panas; the eighth on the 15th with Asvinı after 92 Parvas; the ninth on the 6th (13th ? ) with Uttarăshādha nfter 105 Parvas, the tenth on the 12th Uttaraphalguni after 117 Parvas To determine the 1st Vishuvam (1) 1X2 minus 1 19 equal to 1. 1x6 is equal to 6. Hence 6 is the number of Parras after which it occurs in the 7th Parva of 6 is 3 wlich is the number of the Tith on which it falls. (2) Sımlarly to determine the 4th Vishuva- 4x2 minus 1 is 7; 7X6 19 42. 1 of 42 is 21 There is another rule-which is to be applied to such . (1). .. Cases: If the number denoting half of the number of Parvas is greater than 15, then divide it by 15; add the quotient to the number denoting Parvas; then the sum thus arrived at is the real number of Parvas; the iemainder denotes the Tithi of the Vishuva. Accordingly as 21 is greater than 15, it is divided by 15; the quotient is 1 and the remainder is 6; the quotient is added to 42; it becomes 43. Hence 43 is the number of Parias that liave clapsed. The Tithi of the 4th Vishuva is the 6th In ierse 24 the author gives us the measure of a Nadikā, one-slatieth part of a day. 23. As already pointed out, the ancients liad a Ghatik.. vessel measuring 61/4 Prasthas of water and laring a Vislınla falls But it is to be remembered that such long gress of the sun occur only in the north west corner of India, somewhere about the north of Kanlimir in vers 25 of Vishuva day 18 multiplied by two and onc 18 dle lucteil from the product, and uhen the result is again multiplied by six, denotes the number of the Paria in which it occurs, and half of that number is the number of the Tith on which the desired The third day, the ninth ilay, the full moon iny, then the thirteenth day, anit then the sixth day arc the successive days of Prsluza, and the tenth Vishuva in a Yuga falls on the 12th slay (Rig Jyantıslia) A zessel in which 50 Palas of water can be hept is called an Adhala from Adhala the measure of a Drona should be inferred as already pointed out if hole in its bottom When floated upon water, it sunk making 1 sound soon after it was filled with water entering into it through the hole at its bottom ind indicated the lapse of one Nadıka or Ghutiha This 19 what is referred to in the above verse The table of Drona and other cubic measures is as follows 1 Kudava is equal to 3. Palas 4 Kud 1vns are equal to a Pristh or 12Pring 4 Pristhag are equal to an Adhaka or 50 Plus 4 Adhakas are equal to a Drona or 200 Palas Hence one Adhaha minus 3 Kuda vas is equal to 200 minus 9: Palas that 19 1905 Palis or divided by 124, it is equal to 1625X2/(8X 45) Pristhing or 61/4 Prnsthng which is equal to one Nadıka 12 Nadıkas are equal to 12x61/4 Prosthus or 183 Prasthus We have been told that the rate of increase of the day during the Dakshinayına is one Pragtha per dry and that the total of the increase of the day during the 183 days of the southern progress of the sun 14° 183 Prasthas or 12 Nadthas or 6 Muhurtas crease is also referred to in the astronomical works of the Jainas Hence The same in V 20 from a Drona three Audaras are deducted, it will be 24 the measure of a Nadila Having multiplied by 11 the number of Parlas that has since elaj sed and having multi leid by 9 the number of Tithes that has since clapsed, one las to divide the sum of the 1 rurlucts by the number of Paras in a Yuga, the quotient thuis obtained 1. ith the number of Parlas elapsed gizes the sun's Nalshatra 25. in order from the commencement of the Inga 25 we tre given a formula to find out the Nakshatra of the sun on any given day 24. The formula is thus arrived in 1 Yugil the sun moves through 5 times 27 or 135 Mahshatras, and there are in a lugz 124 Parsis Nou if in 124 Partas the suu goes through 135 Naks, then in a given number of Parvas he goes through HX given Parva , that is, Piri? plus a Parvis Agrip if in the 15 Tıthuis of a Parva tho sun goes through it Naks, then in a given number of Tıthis he goes through (135 T2 )/16X127, that is Tit T. Combining these tito results, we have P plus (11 P plus 9 T1/124 Applying this formula, the sun s Nakshatra in the first Parva of a Iugr is thus arrived at 1 plus (11 plus 9 11/124 which is equal to It means tint the sun is in the second Nakshatrı from Dhanishtha, that is, Purvabhadrz Tlus is correct because the first Parva occurs 15 days after the coin inenceinent of the Iuga As the sun takes 13 days to move through a Nakshatra be bus passed through Satabhisliaj in the 13: days of the Paria and has been in the Purvabladrpd for 14 days Let us tahe the 5th Tithi in the 5tb Parii of 7 Yug flere Parts number is 4 und Tithi number is 4 rccorumgly 4 7 lus (11x4 plus 9 x4)/124 is equal to 48 that is he his pissed throagli 4 Nakshatrs in 643 days and has been in the 5th Nakshatr (Rev atı) for 9: days out of the 64 days In verse 26 we are given n forinula to find out the Yogn and its Nakshatra 25 Non the moon s Nik 19 th us found Let us take cuse the inoon is on the 11th Tithi in the 2nd Paryż As already shown, the Nah of the 1st Parva in the 17 from Duunislatlia, that is Magha The cleventh from 27 Haring ilivude l by I the parts of the Nal shatra where the sun is situateil, and haling multizlied the remainder of the decision by 2, one may declare the prorluct to be the amsas of a Nal shata through which the sun passes every day The lunar Tethis added to the larly amsas of the sun is the periol The time which the sun takes to pass through a Nakshatri is given in verse 39 as 137 days It may also be found thus The sun pisses 5 times through all the 27 Naks in a Yuga of 1,830 days So he passes through one Nik in 1830/(5 x 27) days, which is equal to 138 days Here the puts of one Nakshatra ure its 124 Amśns or its 620 parts called Kaslthias These Amsis or parte he passes through in 137 days Here the Naksbatrn parts are divided by pine The remainder is 5/9 We are asked to multiply this reminder by 2 and take the numerator 10 as the number of Amsis which the sun passes through per day It has already keen pointed out in the notes on verse 19 that while the moon moves through 603 of 620 Kashthas per Tithi the sun goes through 45 of the 620 Kasbthas per Tithi 45 Kashthas are equal to 9 of 124 Amsas of 1 Nakshatra Savana-day is a little longer than a Tithi the author of the Jyautisha puts the daily velocity of the sun 15 10 Amsis of a Nakshatra According to definition the sum of the longitudes of the sun and the moon is a Yoga Wlicn the author says that the addition of the lunar Tıthis to the daily Amsis of the sun is a Yoga evidently it is a Yoga wluch the sun and the moon supposed to move in opposite is given 18 7 name to the sum of the longitudes of directions along the ecliptic the same eximples given m verse 19 Sice a In the fire 28 called Yoga; The Nakshatra of the Yoga is founil by applying the formula giren in renses 20 and 25 for finding the moon's and the sun's Nakshatias. 26. The Blaseslia (73/124) anil its one-third, and the Dırasāmsallūga of the 14 days of a Parra and its one-third, the fraction being left out or taken as an Maghā for 11 days at the rate of one Nakshatra per slay is Purvāshādha from Maghā. In the 2nd case the Nakshatra of the Sth Parva is Rohini according to the formula given in verse 19. The 9th from it 19 Uttaraphalguni, the Nakshatrı of the 10th lunar day Now to find out the sun 8 Nakshatras on the two Yoga days Here the formula is P. plus (11 P. plus 9 Ti ) 124 For the 1st Yoga the formula gives 118 That is, the sun was in the 2nd Nakshatra from Dhanishthá It is Satabhishaj But we have to add to this 14, since the Jaias begin their cycle with full moon, leaving the sun at a distance of 14 Nakshatras from Dhanslithā or the end of Śravana, while according to the Vedāngajyautisha the sun was with the moon in the Dhanishthi Nakshatra Accordingly 14 plus 1 is 15, the fifteenth from Dhanishtha is Maglia in which according to the Jainas the sun was in the 1st Yoga. Now for the Nakshatra of the 5th Yoga :-Here the number of Parvas is 8 and that of the Tithis is 9, Hence 8 pilis (11X8 plus 9X 9)/124 is equal to 9 M'.. Add 14 as before The sum will be 23, that is, the sun was at the beginning of Jyeshţha or at the end of Anuradbi, whiclı is 22nd from Dhanishtha. In the 27th verse we are given the kalās equivalent to the Paiva-bhajesha ieferred to in verse 23 and also the characteristic of the Bliasesha indicating an increase of a day in a Parva over and above the preceding Parva Here the word “ Bhädäna-kalās" is taken from the 26. 21st verse by way of Anuvritti. The last word of the verse should be read as “ avetya" and not as "avedya," 35 tion Divasamsabhagn leral year consists of 366 days; it also contains 6 cr one, two Ayrnas, called the Uttarijans and the 29 integral namber, are the Bhädäna-kalās, the halás necessary to arrive at the Nakshatra of the Parva, (The word “Blūdána-kalās is taken from the 21st Zerse by way of what is called " Anuvritto") If the Bhasesha of the Paria in question is greater than that of the preceding Parva by half a Nakshatra or more than half a Nakshatra, then an increase of a day should be known by 9 or a multiple of 9 appearing as numerator in the Bhasesha of the Parva in ques- 27 Three hundred and sixty six days, one year, Bhasesha of the Parva rasi is A (vide verse 11), is 7 kalās which the moon tahes over and above a day to pass through a Nakshatra Hence the daily Amsas for 14 days are 14 x 7 equal to 98 Its one third is nearly 33 The one-thud of Bhasesha is 24 which is equal to nearly 24 Hence 73+21+-98-+33 or 228 are the halas which are to be added to the kalıs of the Parva titlus and multiplied by 11 and divided by the kalās equivalent to a Bha or Nakshatra in order to arrive at the Nakshatra of a given Parva Thus hus been explained in verse 2] In the 58th, 79th, 87th, 100th, 108th Parvas the numerator of the Bhamsa is a multiple of nine Hence in those Parvas there is an increase of a Nakshatraequivalent day over and above the day of their preceding Paivas In the 78th, the Blīmsz gni es 46 days, while in the 79th, it gives 46 days While in the 8th ut is 50, in the 87th it is 51, while in 99th it 18 58, in 100th it is 58!, while in 107th it 19 62, in 108th at 19 03 In uneven number of Parvae, the increase 19 more than Half a day and it does not contun the number 9, the -haracteristic number The meming of the 25th, rere is that a solar 27 Dakshinijana, and 12 months of 30 days cuch, and Pyears make a Yuga.

30 sir scasons, ttco Ayanas (the northern and southern progress of the sun), twelve months are to be considered as solar; this tahen five times is a cycle." 28. “In a Yuga of five years the number of risings of the Dhanishtha (and other Nakshatras) is the same as the number of days in it increased by five (that is 1,830 plus 5, that is 1,835); the risings of the moon is the same less by 62 (that is 1,830-62); the sides ial revolutions of the moon is also the same less by 21 (that is 67 x 27 equal to 1,830-31 equal to 1,809)." 29. “The sederal rerolutions of the sun in a Inga are 135; the Ayanas of the moon in a Yuga are the same less by one, that is 135-1 equal to 134; onefourth of the number of Parras in a Yuga is called a . The meaning of the 29th verse is that in a Yuga of 5 years or 1,830 days the Duanistlā and other Nahshatras rise and set 1,835 times ; each rising of a Nakshatra is called a Lagna; later on Lagna as a name was appliec to the rise of a zodiacal sign consisting of 27 Nakshatras The Jyotish karanda of the Jaipas says (Page 190 verse 288). "The Lagna of the five Vishuvas o equinoctial day, in a Yuga is the rise of the Asvin Nakshatra in the Uttarayana; and that in the liv Dakshinajanas is the rise of the Svātı Nakshatra. "I a Yuga of 1,830 days the moon rises 1,768 times; an in the same period the moon makes 1,809 siderirevolutions." 28 & 2 Tlie above verse means that in a year the su mahes one siderial revolution, and in a Yuga of fi- Jears he passes through every Nakshatra 5 times; ti moon makes in a Yug« 67 siderial revolutions, and the rate of two Ayamas in a revolution she inak 2x 67, that is 134 Ayanas. The number of Partas a Yuga is 124 one-fourth of a Parva is called a Pīd 121 Kūshthas inahe a kala.
