Guṇāḍhya गुणाढ्य

59b

a. of Bṛhatkathā (non-extant) in Paiśācī Pkt.; for legends about Guṇāḍhya's life see
Kathāsaritsāgara I. 6-8 which would place him in A. D.; two recensions of his work are known
through their Skt. adaptations (1) the Kashmir recension represented by Somadeva's
Kathāsaritsāgara (See NCC. III. p. 136b) and Kṣemendra's Bṛhatkathāmañjarī (See NCC. V. p.
168), and (2) the so-called Nepal recension represented by the Bṛhatkathāślokasaṅgraha of
Budhasvāmin. The Gaṅga King Durvinīta, contemporary of Bhāravi (7th Cent. A. D.) is said to have
made a Skt. rendering of the work (Ind. Ant. 1913, p. 204; JRAS. 1913, p. 389 ff.). There is
a Tamil version in the Peruṅkatai of Koṅguvel, edn. U. Swaminatha Iyer, Madras, 1924 (C. 2nd
Cent. A. D.) and a Persian version, see Lacote, Essai, p. 197 ff.

The Pkt. version of the story is found in Vāsudeva-hiṇḍī of Saṅghadāsa and Dharmasena (See
L. Alsdorf, BSOAS. VIII. pp. 320 ff).

Ref. to by Daṇḍin, Subandhu, Bāṇa; also by Jinasena (Ādipurāṇa), and Somadeva
(Yaśastilakacampū). On stories about Guṇāḍhya see also Jayaratha's Haracaritacintāmaṇi.
Govardhana considers him an incarnation of Vyāsa.

A Cambodian ins. of 9th Cent. A. D. ref. to him ‘Guṇāḍhyaḥ Prākṛtapriyaḥ’ (S. Levi,
JA. 1885. 412). On the home of Guṇāḍhya, see V. V. Mirashi XVI. AIOC. Summaries, pp.
153-4.

On Guṇāḍhya, see F. Lacote, Essai sur Guṇāḍhya et la Bṛhatkathā, Paris, 1908. (Eng.
transl. by A. M. Tabard, Bangalore, 1923); V. Raghavan, Bhoja's Śṛṅgāraprakāśa (1963), pp.
[Page060-a] 839-57; Bhoja q. the longest Paiśācī passage from Bṛhatkathā; Wint. HIL. III.
